Edge was a place that never slept. Even late into the evening one could find something to do: from the nightclubs that were densely packed at the parts of town closest to the ruins of Midgar, beneath the incomplete highways, to the eateries that specialized in local fair once served in the Sector 6 slums that had become popular with even the workmen of the Shinra Company and had made it popular throughout the Upper Plates. Though no longer separated by the plates there was a strong and distinct divide between the rich and poor. Construction projects lagged behind in the poorer parts of town, while the richer districts avoided the rolling blackouts common thanks to power siphoning from the generators to power illegal drug dens deep beneath the view of the WRO force. There were many who still found ways to subside on diluted forms of refined makou, once manufactured in Kalm to help those suffering from the Stigma. While the Stigma has long since been eradicated there were many, Rufus included, who could not be without the supplements lest find themselves suffering from withdrawal. While the Shinra executive needed it less and less these days his eyes would retain the taint, SOLDIER-esque glow along the edges of his eyes for years to come. Rufus worked to destroy these dens and continue to finance the WRO while they constructed pylons in the destitute parts of town, particularly by the hospitals and orphanages. Fortunately Tuesti was in charge of Urban Development. Since it had been his passion prior his father's corrupting hand, the man maintained his desire to continue to help the people of Edge rebuild their lives outside of Midgar, those that chose to stay, in any case. Costa del Sol was one of these places far from the dramas of urban life. The castaway shores of the resort was maintained by the elite of the elite. Rufus' villa was said to be located somewhere on the hill lots, but there were none who could tell you exactly which it was as the Turks fiercely controlled that network of information. But that did not mean Shinra activity in and around the port town was not obvious. As of late many ships coming to and from Junon would stop at the port town before eventually being delivered to Edge. It was difficult to tell just what the executive was up to, but according to the News Networks, which was owned by the company in question: Rufus was reviving the Space Program and many resources were being delivered to Rocket Town, as well as ventures to aide North Coral in its mining operations. ▲ 0442 ● Rina Croft ● Steps to the truth begin behind lies

Rina was only feeling slightly bad for...not lying per se but not telling him the whole story. Ravus was a good guy and she truly wanted to help him find a solution to his starscourge issue but if he was going to drag her all the way out to Gaia then she was going to cross some things off of her list as well. Rina had bid goodnight to Ravus, walking into her villa but not at all going to bed. She had sat at her kitchen table for nearly two hours sipping at a mug of tea, and icing her aching ankle from her encounter with the Malboro. When she felt enough time had passed for Ravus to either be sleeping or to think Rina was asleep, she then went to work. It was time for a little recon. Shutting her bedroom door behind her and locking it for good measure, Rina undressed and changed into black cargo pants, a workout top, and a black leather jacket instead of her favorite purple one. She had braided her dark hair over her shoulder and tightened up the laces of her boots. A small smile twitched at her lips. She wasn't sure how long it had been since she had done recon here at home and was nervous about getting caught, but that melted into the usual excitement that she had felt before sneaking around and getting into places where she shouldn't be. The only part that made her sad was doing it alone. She missed having a literal and figurative partner in crime. After downing a potion to numb up her ankle Rina slipped out the back door of her side of the villa. She clung to the shadows to gaze out at the dark expanse of ocean in front of her. Gods she was almost glad to be home. ---------------------------- Rina's contact in what was left of the ruins of Shinra Inc. had given her a few bits of info that seemed like it could lead somewhere. One was that Rina needed to stop being paranoid of what information Rufus Shinra may or may not have on her. He had "turned a new leaf" and was trying to "make the world a better place." That didn't make Rina feel better and just made her want to cover her sordid and sometimes bloody tracks through the slums, under the table business and pleasure deals with various Turks, blackmail topics, merc jobs and all the trash she just knew about the Midgar Underground and what remained of it in Edge. Hell, sometimes she felt bad about dancing at the Honeybee when she was like 17. She just wanted to close that folder and burn it. Rina hated to come home and have to look over her shoulder the whole time. The other bit was that Rufus had been having lots of imports and exports from Costa del Sol recently and that the man himself may be supervising the work. She'd have to keep her eyes peeled at the Villas. So with that bit of information was what had her scoping out the docks at 3 o'clock in the morning. There was one cargo ship in the dock that she assumed would be heading out in the morning. She didn't see any heavy security outside, but that didn't mean there wasn't any Turks or even WRO hanging around somewhere. She needed to be careful. Rina started to make her way to board the ship. It was not until six in the morning that a car would peel in from the roads and into one of the spaces at the docks. The familiar visage of a Turk would step out of the driver's seat, than another out off the passenger's side before a man in a white suit stepped out of the back seat: a massive black Tentacle Hound plodding behind him. It wasn't hard to guess the ostentatious visage of Rufus Shinra and his entourage of what many considered thugs. But these were Rufus' highly skilled and well paid thugs who would lay down their lives for the man, but only after taking out a swath of his enemies first. The Turks were always assumed to be armed and dangerous. Even Rufus was no slouch. As he adjusted his jacket the flap of the vestment would part from his body and display a sawed off shotgun rest in a waist holster with a pistol on the small of his back. The dockhannds came to attention at Rufus' presence, the man smiling as he greeting his employees with a familiar handshake and casual greetings, curious of their families. " Sir!" The ship captain called as he saluted, standing at ease when Rufus motioned his hand. " This trip will not be met with any difficulties. A scouting ship sent ahead took care of any Sahagin menaces so we should be seeing clear waters all the way to Junon!" Rufus smirked, reaching down to brush the side of Dark Nation's head. " Good.... I wouldn't want to have any issues like last time. We nearly lost one of the RECs." It was not a word many were familiar with, but the company had mentioned the WRO's RECreation project that was meant to restore land previously damaged by Makou poisoning, perhaps this was what he was talking about? " Sir!" The Captain would be dismissed and Rufus would walk ahead of the Turks, boarding the ship. The ship was inbound to Junon and would take approximately three hours to make the trip, if any unforeseen circumstances didn't arise with the local wildlife. The ship had half an hour before it shoved off, which would possibly give Rina enough time to sneak aboard if she so chose. It was hard to tell what WRO soldiers or sailors would do to a stowaway, but it was an easy guess what Shinra would do. ▲ 0401 ● Rina Croft ● If a man was measured only by his good deeds...

Rina had lurked inside of the cargo ship for what seemed like hours. And she had nothing to show for it. Not one damnable piece of evidence. Nearly all of the cargo on the ship looked like it could be used for construction or farming. Wood, rebar, tools of all kinds. Nothing that seemed suspicious at all...except for the fact that Rina had had to hide from several gun-toting WRO soldiers. That was quite suspicious. Why would they be guarding this type of stuff? It didn't make any sense. Was her intel bad? No...impossible. Maybe the rumors were true, and Rufus was funding the birth of this new world. Rina had nearly decided to give up and go home when she heard heavy footsteps coming down the hall. Rina decided to jump behind a half empty pallet of wooden crates. They were stacked high enough that she couldn't be seen, but she was able to keep watch through the gap between the stacks. Two more armed soldiers were walking in her direction and deep in conversation. As they came closer she could make out some of what they were saying. " The President is here?" " Yeah, he was meeting with the captain before we sail out." The one who had just spoke seemed to glance down at a watch. " We should be headed out any minute now. I hope we can to Junon in one piece this time." Rina had to bite back a gasp as the men spoke. Rufus! He was here! And they were about to sail out! She couldn't be stuck on this thing and go out to Junon! That would take days! Rina quietly brought her palm to her forehead. She had ran out of time...or had she? As she had glanced down she noticed something painted onto the crates that she stood behind. REC-02. Huh. This was different. She hadn't seen any other crates like this. The crate on top was too tall for Rina to handle without making a lot of noise, so kneeling she examined the bottom crate. There was a handful of cracks on one side like it could have been buckling from the weight of the top crate. The girl glanced through the gap between the stacks to make sure the coast was clear before bringing out her dagger to pry away at the crack. Working as quickly but as quietly as possible she was able to pry enough away to stick her hand in. She felt around through the shreds of paper packing before she landed on something solid and she pulled it out. It was a smaller box, about the size of a pair of nunchaku, and it had the same black letters as the larger crate. Finally! Something interesting! Sticking the box into her backpack and removing a handful of flashbangs to clip to her belt, Rina began her escape. -------------------- Rina was an idiot. Like truly. She didn't think there was anyone more stupid that she was. She had nearly made it topside before she was caught. The ship was about to pull away from the docks and sailors and soldiers a like were bustling around to their stations. Rina had just begun to climb the stairs that led to the deck, before she heard someone yelling " Hey! Stop!". She glanced behind her to see one WRO guy coming towards her. " Who are you? Why are you on this ship?" Rina grinned sheepishly and shrugged. " I like a man in uniform?" At that the man's eyes narrowed and he went over to mash a red button on the wall. A loud, screeching intruder alarm began to blare and Rina sighed. " Really?! Now I have to run!" The girl sprinted up the stairs and tried to find a quick exit off of the ship. A group of three grunts was rushing towards her and she grabbed a flashbang from her belt. Hoping that a possible grenade would stop them she threw the flashbang at their feet and sprinted down the gangplank and across the dock...to skid to a stop right in front of Rufus Shinra. Unlike the SOLDIERs of olde the WRO were not as inclined to shoot to kill, or kill on sight. They were protectors, guards and their current duty was to protect Shinra goods from the sticky fingers of third parties far too invested in the idea of selling Shinra back their own goods. The ship did not seem to have anything that could be considered a weapon, or the old technology that Shinra has conquered the world with. Though the company still had a chokehold on such innovative industries they had loosened their grip if only to appear willing to partner up and negotiate with inventors and creators that cropped up in the vacuum of power that bore a burning hole in the newly unoccupied fields. The box Rina grabbed has some considerable weight to it. It did well to weigh her down so it was likely an adjustment. When she was caught and the alert sent out the shop quickly went into lockdown. For just ordinary cargo it seemed -- overkill. Something was on this ship that Shinra didn't want to get off without their knowledge. Rufus was finalizing the documents with the captain. The man's steps were followed at close feel by a pair of Turks and, at his side: his black furred Tentacle Hound whose ferocity was unmatched. The chains that bound its collar rattled when it shook its body: the metal links slung loosely over its body like a harness. It's snarling jowls were eased by the touch of Rufus' fingertips along the top of its cranium. " Excellent." Rufus had looked over the last of the papers before handing them back to the Captain. The man saluted the executive. " On my honor ser. You're not wont to find thieves able to pinch goods from our ships!" They had enough armed guards to fight off roving bands of Sahagin with ease. " Good." Rufus was delighted that he would be able to get out another REC soon. " Complications with their increasing numbers has inhibited maritime trade as of late." He would do something about it. Rina came to a sliding stop but steps from Rufus' person. The man looked up, brows furrowing as Darkstar started to snarl outright. The white suited CEO turned to face the woman. She seems to have been trying to get away from trouble. The WRO guards would be able to catch up with Rina so long as she did not run further. " No thieves, captain?" Rufus asked as the Turks maintained their position behind him, at a fair distance. " S-sir..." How troubling for the captain. " Grab her and search her you fools!" Rufus could do nothing but smirk. This was all quite amusing. What could this woman gain, lose, that she would risk stealing from Shinra? While they were a changed face in the dynamics of the world they still adhered to the belief that ending the opposition with bullets was no substitute. " How interesting..." He murmured aloud, raising his hand to adjust his fingerless gloves. ▲

Late morning sun filtered though the bedroom windows of Rina's villa and she had to shield her eyes from its brightness as she was jolted awake by rapt knocking at the back door of the cottage. Rina's eyes squinted to make out the time on the clock on the wall. It was just 10 am. The young woman had been able to sneak in a few hours of sleep after her morning raid on the Shinra ship. She assumed this must be Ravus giving her a wake up call. It was time to start her day for real. As Rina fought back the covers and found a robe to slip on, her annoyance seemed to grow as the knocking continued and to seem to grow only more insistent. Now that seemed very unlike Ravus to be so irritating. Throwing open the door, Rina placed one hand on her hip and scowled. " Yes?! Really Ravus you don't have to..." She stopped short in her rant because it wasn't her companion at the door but two vaguely familiar faces dressed in black suits. She hoped the pang she felt in her chest at the sight of them didn't register in her face. How long had it been since she had seen him...Rina shook her head and pulled herself back into realty. " Turks. Why am I surprised? Where's your boss? You're interrupting my nap time." Rufus Shinra

Costa del Sol was a place one could go to and always forget their troubles. Sinking into the benal monotony of sand and sun, the coast stretched out for miles and seemed never ending. You could catch a wave on a surfboard or enjoy the isolation of one of the luxurious villas built upon the water from, but that was if you had the gil to spend as many of the decadent homes were designed and built for the leisure of members of the Shinra company. The pay given to the upper echelons of the corporate superpower could afford the exorbitant prices that burned the price tags of the opulent chateaus. Though there were rentable villas that the common man could afford to rent, if he saved for a lifetime. They were far from the sunny beachfront properties in a gaggle of rent-to-own shacks that were suitable for a weekend stay at the costs some sought to wring from the wallets of the everyman. Some felt it was worth it, to be able to visit the coastal town: a man made paradise carved from nature's gifts. Some viewed it as an excess only afforded to the greediest, Machiavellians who had lied their way to the top . Whatever side you were on in such considerations it was no surprise that when Shinra collapsed many of the villas had gone up for sale in order to pay debts and feed the mouths of starving families who had lost the very jobs that promised them eternal wealth. But the Planet was fickle and so were the structures that held up the corporate machine. Still Rufus was a man of principles and as the world changed so did he in order to maintain his status quo. The Turks were but a piece of that power: dogs trained from birth to loyalty sympathize with the good works of their company. Even now the suffering that rendered a new generation of orphaned youths only created a new pool of youths to continue the Turk program. However one viewed Rufus' intentions it did little to stop him or turn him from his belief that his company was great, after all he too was raised among the man the like-minded Turks had looked to for leadership, the flaws painfully apparent to them both. His father was to eventually meet his end and if not by the duplicitous nature of his son than by the folly of his own monstrous creations. Rufus stood at the threshold of the villa, but steps away from his bodyguards, not that they were needed with the monstrous Tentacle Hound nipping at the executive's heels. Under the whisper of the ocean winds his white coat would flutter: revealing the hefty gun holstered at his hip. Shinra's weapon technology at its finest. If the Turks were not quick enough to hold Rina down were she to charge, well a bullet from Rufus' gun would do the job more cleanly. The two Turks stepped aside as Rufus adjusted the collar of his light jacket, the heat of the sun bearing down on him. His blonde locks were slicked back, sapphire gaze drawing out from behind pale lids as his gaze turned onto Rina, a smirk tugging at the edge of his lips. " And you interrupted my shipment so I do believe we can be considered even Miss Croft." He turned his wrist over to look at his watch, pressing at the buttons to activate the backlight and observe the time. " I do believe that is what you're calling yourself these days, is it not?" He lowered his arms, tucking them behind the small of his back. " Do you have a moment to talk? It is rather hot out here. I wouldn't mind coming in for some iced water." Of course there was not much choice to be had in the situation. Shinra likely owned all of the property along the beach and could easily intrude on her property as their imminent domain. The Tentacle Hound, bound in heavy chains as it shook out its dark body, would let out a deep snort, its head lowered as those beady eyes fell upon the woman in question, fangs ready and tentacle swaying. ▲

Rina's eyebrows lifted in surprise as the Turks moved aside and Rufus Shinra and his guard dog took their places in her doorway. She strongly felt the urge to bow and make a smart comment towards the man, but felt like this exchange would be less painful if she would remain on her best behavior. With a soft sigh she would step to the side motioning for the former President and his entourage to come on in if they so chose. Closing and locking the door behind them she stepped into the kitchen to get a pitcher of water ready. She may have had some strong feelings towards Rufus and yes, she may have just stolen some property from him but she wasn't completely rude. She grabbed a small bowl as well. " I'll assume your dog drinks water as well? Or does it drink mako straight from the tap?" Setting the pitcher, glasses, and bowl onto the island (they could help themselves) she took a seat at the kitchen table and looked over her guests. Rina should have been very afraid, but she wasn't. Turks were dangerous. Rufus and his hound were dangerous. But so was she. None of the people gathered were inherently deadly so as long as she kept her cool she should be okay. Rina nodded at Rufus. " Miss Croft seems a bit formal, but yes. Things are different now, don't need as many aliases I suppose." Rina crossed her legs. " I'm sure you know all about me from...Two Guns." Her heart twisted in her chest as she murmured the title that her closest companion had used. Rina knew now, like she knew then that having any association with a Turk would mean she most likely had a file rich with all of her life somewhere. " Much more than I'll ever know about you and this new operation you have. You're here so I'll return your property?" Chances are Rina would return the item, but not without getting something back for it. " I'm sure I'm in no position to make deals but...I'll help you if you help me." Rina gave Rufus her best smile. | Sorry? Why, I've never had this much fun. | |
Rufus was a masterful speaker who knew that you needn't say much to instill a feeling of terror into your enemies, but he also knew that those days were far behind him. After Planet's second Calamity from the Skies he knew he could no longer be the man his father had expected him to be. As the leader of the Shinra Corporation he still had a duty to maintain the industry his ancestors created. It was not by some sense of ancestral pride nor was it that he felt he owed anything to the people of the world. If nothing else Rufus had a deep sense of pride in what he helped to create and continued to build around the smoldering ruins of his father's legacy. He had met with death and was willing to walk into its embrace. Such an event had left him embarrassed and wilted by his own weakness, one he had thought his father had burned from his every pore.
In that the executive could begin to grow and understand that if he wanted to maintain his position and stamp out every enemy in his path he needed to pave new roads with his own power, not that borrowed from his corpse of a father, or his collapsed industries. What the people wanted wasn't makou, but a way to live comfortably without having to shoulder the guilt that it cost millions of lives of unseen or sundered souls. Planet was not theirs to harvest and lest they wished Omega to become a glint in the horizon they needed to move forward.
With Rufus at the helm, of course...
Stepping into the villa Rufus' black shoes tapped lightly against the wooden floors. Though dressed to impress the leading figure of Shinra had also maintained a casual air that fit amidst the tropical print shirts and topless figures desperate to regain their lost youths: it was a sad picture that Rufus would rather avoid, so he made sure to ride on the airs of a casual meeting instead. He would settle himself on the most comfortable looking seat, kicking his left knee over his right as the massive, black-skinned hound came to sit at his side. The Turks, foregoing seating, stood at the ready watching their boss. Viewing Rina as a civilian they hardly felt the need to overwhelm her with their presence, but knowing their boss' intervention was more of an inevitability than an actual issue raising from his guests.
Despite the fact he was Miss Croft's guest....
Leaning back Rufus would smirk as he pressed a thumb and forefinger to his chin, bright eyes following the woman as she went to provide them with drinks. "Oh is that dirty rumor still floating around?" He mused, a glint of something in his eyes rather reminiscent of a SOLDIER's gaze. "I can assure you Miss Croft that our Tentacle Hounds are uncorrupted. Just the result of skilled breeding. In fact I received my first when I was a child, plucked from a litter birthed from a female my father hand-picked." That was little to say of the intervention the Science Department had in the breeding program.
It was likely a project what had driven Hojo's curiosity about cross breeding other creatures together to create an amalgamation of chimeric horrors...
Overcoming his amusement as looping the formal title around his tongue the eccentric seeming executive reached out for a glass and poured it full before drinking down at least half. His actions were deliberate: quenching a thirst he did not have, and whetting his lips for the talk they were about to have. Setting the glass down he took a moment to absorb his surroundings. It was a small villa, but furnished to make it feel like a home. He personally hated staying in the villas along the Coast. It reminded him of his time under house arrest. The hours he had spent in the walls of their family's villa had driven him to acts of reckless fancy: from escaping his watch nightly, only for them to get a scathing scolding from their commanding officer before getting let go, to slipping from the watchful eyes of his detail to enjoy a few drinks at a dive. It was all to irritate his father's men and maybe a little to entertain himself. In the end he always ended up back at the villa and plotting, planning, and building his persona of fear that he would use to take over his father's empire.
In the end that too had meant nothing. The old man was killed by his own creations and Rufus' ego was wounded by Meteorfall.
Rufus would finally speak. "It's a shame really, I think he was the only one standing between Don Corneo and his terrible fate." He had crossed his hands, fingers netting together as he turned his gaze to Rina without moving his head. A faint smirk drew itself over his lips, a phantom of a smile. "I heard he tried to kidnap the heir of one of Wutai's leading families... and one of my Turks." Of course it wouldn't have ended well for Corneo in the end. "I'm sure they are all still traipsing about somewhere." The Turks were, after all, his lifeblood. He fought tooth and nail to keep the division alive as his father did everything in his power to wipe it out. "Straight to business, is it Miss Croft? And here I thought we were connecting. I was just about to ask what your thoughts on me as a father were." He seemed devilishly delighted by his diversion. "But, now that you mention it, tell me how willing are you to keep it? Do you know what the RECs do?" His hand would fall to his side, his palm coming to rest on the Tentacle Hound's head. The beast had not once taken its eyes off of Rina, that piercing gaze was that of a predator ready to pounce. The beast was on duty. There were very few who could turn its head, the first being Rufus, with the Director and Elena following close behind. Something about Tentacle Hounds always seemed unnatural as they were found in makou rich areas beneath the plates of Midgar. Many suspect the beast was an aberrations of the wild variants imported from the Western Continent, but the heartier breed was indeed native to the Midgar Mountains making it quite hearty even in the slums where survival was difficult for even rats. Something about his question felt like a trap. The machine was strange, nothing that had ever been produced before. There were no pipes to siphon makou, there were no controls to trigger any sort of murderous trap. It seemed an ordinary piece of machinery that was incomplete without another, quite important, component. But it wasn't apparent until Rufus asked her what it was even for that it was indeed a rather incomplete looking machine, no bigger than a barrel, and as easy to carry as one with effort.▲ 1176 ● Rina Croft ● There are many secrets behind a man made of lies
