Ramza Beoulve
Nickname:
Ramza
Age:
18
Gender:
Male
Job:
Mercenary
Side:
Light
Family:
Ramza is the youngest male descendant of Barbaneth Beoulve and, thus, member of the renowed Beoulve Family from Ivalice. His mother was a courtesan from the Lugrian family.
Personality:
For the longest time, Ramza fought to prove himself. Was the not-so-legitimate son of Barbaneth and clearly not as capable, strong or cunning as his half-brothers Dycedarg and Zalbag. This inferiority complex still plagues the young Knight; however, as his adventures progressed, Ramza's innate goodness turned him into a hero. Ramza is the sort of person that will fight for you and your rights, even if you hate him for it. He's the prototypical white knight, fighting for justice wherever he goes without care for rewards or recognition. Naturally, this make his life much harder than it could otherwise be. Such is the price of a heavy conscience, and of a name to live up to.
History:
Wanting to uphold his family's name, Ramza joined the military young, as a squire and knight-in-training. Delita Heiral, a commoner and his best friend, also joined; the two would lead parallel lives, dictated by their birth.
In the academy, Ramza ended up tangling with the Corpse Brigades, a group of former knights who defected from the military after the events of Ivalice's Fifty Years War, which left them poor and unrecognized. The movement sought to overthrow the nobility. As his fights progressed, Ramza and Delita began to doubt the morality of their higher-ups. At the end of the conflict, Delita's sister, Tietra, was kidnapped and used as a human shield by the last member of the Brigade. The military decided to sacrifice Tietra to take down the rebellious group once and for all, shocking Ramza and shattering Delita.
After this event - and the battle that ensued against the Knight order - Ramza left the organization, becoming a mercenary-for-hire under Dark Knight Gaffgarion. Eventually, his group was hired by Holy Knight Agrias to escort Princess Ovelia, the heir to the Ivalice throne and, unbeknownst at the time, about to become the cornerstone of a civil war. Ovelia is kidnapped by Delita, who Ramza hadn't seen in years; the group pursue him and eventually find Delita, cornered by enemy soldiers. Gaffgarion betrays the group, announcing that his orders, from Ramza's brother Dycedarg were to kill Ovelia. Ramza refuses to follow those orders and, together with Delita, force Gaffgarion to fall back, keeping the Princess safe. The group seeks to keep Ovelia safe by seeking refuge with Cardinal Alphonse Delacroix, who they hope can keep Ovelia safe by being a high-up member of the Church, a neutral party in the conflicts.
On the way, they save Mustadio Bunansa, a young machinist being pursued by criminals because of a magical stone he holds. When they reach their destiny, they learn from the cardinal the legend of the Holy Stones and the Zodiac Braves. Ramza leaves Agrias and Ovelia at the castle and journeys with Mustadio to his home; there, they learn the criminal Bart Trade Company, who is pursuing Mustadio, is working for the Cardinal to collect the Holy Stones. Realizing Ovelia and Agrias are in danger, the party returns to Leonel Castle, where they confront the Cardinal; he reveals the Church's plot to use the power of the Holy Stones, who hold the powerful Lucavi Demons, to increase their power. One of the demons possesses the Cardinal, but is taken care of by the group.
This event brands Ramza as an heretic, and he is pursued by the church after visiting his family. His sister, Alma, flees with him, and the party travels to Orbone Monastery, where Alma remembers seeing one of the stones. They are beaten to the stone by the Knights Templar, who also kidnap Alma.
Ramza travels to Riovane Castle to rescue Alma after learning she is being detained there. Ramza and his group defeat Wiegreif, the old leader of the Corpse Brigades and now a Knight Templar, who is possessed by the demon Belius, and Marquis Eldmore, who Ramza saved in his squire days but is now working with the church. However, Alma is nowhere to be seen, taken away by the church again.
In order to attempt to twarth the church's plot, Ramza travels to Cidolfus Orlandeau, one of the most powerful and influential men in the kingdom, to warn him of the Lucavi plot. Cid is stripped of his position by Delita's machinations before this happens, but Ramza manages to recruit him to his cause. The group then attacks Marquis Eldmore's castle in the hopes of finding Alma there. They dispatch another demon, the one inhabiting the Marquis, but don't find Alma. Ramza learns that his brother Dycedarg is with the Lucavi and rushes home, arriving at the midst of a battle between Zalbag and Dycedarg. Dycedarg, with the demonic powers of one of the Lucavi, kills Zalbag, but is defeated by Ramza.
Ramza learns that Alma is being taken to Orbone Monnastery, where the Knight Templars hope to revive Ultima, the leader of the Lucavi, using Alma's body as a vessel. Ramza interrupts the ritual, but the leader of the Templars sacrifice himself to bring Ultima, without using Alma's body. Ramza manages to defeat the demon, stopping the Lucavi plot once and for all; in that moment, however, the place explodes. Ramza expected to die, but, instead, is immersed in the darkness released by Ultima's death. He wakes up in a strange world, far from home, the world of those who are taken by the darkness but survive the voyage, the world that he later learns to be Traverse Town. In a strange universe, Ramza must now find a new objective and find a way back to his home of Ivalice.
Physical Description:
Ramza is a blond, somewhat short and not very physically impressive young man. Usually he can be seen wearing his Squire outfit - a light blue tunic with a colorful emblem rising from the bottom and a white cape in his back. Underneath, when expecting to face battle, he uses shoulder protectors and leather light armor, which makes him look a bit bulkier than he really is. Brown pants and long leather boots finish the look. His hair is cut short, and his face is innocent-looking, but fierce when determined
Quotes:
"Do you truly believe you can change the world? Not even I am so naive as that."
"We are the sum of our deeds, not our names."
"I had lived my life the only way that I had known. But when the pillars of that life came crashing down, I did not stand and watch them fall. I turned, and walked away."

Our leads brought us to Zirekile Falls, but we did not expect to have success. Delita had a headstart, and a chocobo, while we only had rumors and hope.
But they paid out. As soon as we reached the falls, we saw Delita and the Princess on the rope bridge. That was the good news; but no blessing comes without a catch in this cruel world. A group of the Hokuten Knights were cornering them. One laid dead in the floor near the bridge, and the blood dropping from Delita's sword signaled him as the one to blame. But even he, mighty as he seemed to be after all those years, was no match for multiple powerful enemies.
"Princess Ovelia!" Shouted Agrias, the voice heavy with relief. Ovelia seemed unharmed and well, which the Holy Knight clearly didn't expect.
"Agrias!" The Princess called back.
"Great, here comes a crowd!" Voiced the leader of the knights. "Gaffgarion! Kill them!! And do it now!"
Ramza turned to Gaffgarion, the Dark Knight and the leader of his mercenary band. The knight shrugged. "I don't know what's going on, but it's in the contract!"
"Gaffgarion, are you betraying us?" Asked Agrias, hand on her sword.
"Betraying you? Come on, this is business!" The Dark Knight said, as if commenting on the weather. "Our job is to kidnap the princess 'unharmed'. The job is to kill you all and keep it quiet!".
"What are you getting at? This kidnapping's a sham?" Asked Agrias.
"The Princess is in the way!" The Dark Knight explained. "The Prince should be next in line. If she's alive, there'll be nothing but trouble!"
Delita stepped back, clutching closer to the princess. He looked at Ramza. "Since you're going to die, I'll let you help me. If the Princess is kidnapped and killed by Goltana, they'll be rid of her and his rivals. I'm sure that's how Prince Larg wrote the scenario. No... Dycedarg probably wrote it. Don't you agree, Ramza?"
Ramza felt his stomach turning. He wanted to deny Delita's accusations, but he couldn't. They made sense. Dycedarg has shown his darker side in the past; if he was fine with the sacrifice of Tietra, why not with the Princess too?.
Gaffgarion stepped forward torwards Delita, drawing his sword. "Right, Ramza. Let's get them all!".
Ramza clenched his fists. "Another helpless sacrifice... No more! There must be no more victims like Tietra!"
He drew his own sword and rushed forward, his battle cry rising above the sounds of the falling water for a moment. Gaffgarion was taken by surprise, and blocked Ramza's attack at the very last second. Around them, the battle broke loose; Ramza's party rushed forward, taking on the knights. At the bridge, Delita fought two at once; a friendly Black Mage carbonized an enemy with a spell, while a Monk and a Knight faced the remaining Hokuten.
Ramza slashed again and again, but Gaffgarion had recomposed himself and, in a straight fight, Ramza knew he had no hope of besting the Dark Knight. Still, his arms moved on their own, defying reason and logic, and Ramza was blinded by rage; rage at the betrayal, rage at the injustice being commited against the princess, rage at his own inability to hit Gaffgarion.
Rage can be a boon, but can also be a curse, especially in battle. Gaffgarion took advantage of a clumsy strike and hit Ramza in the face with the swords' pommel. The Beoulve wobbled back, stunned, and Gaffgarion raised his sword for the finishing blow. However, he noticed something, and jumped back instead of finishing the fight. This proved to be the correct move, as the ground where he stood a moment ago erupted in ice, a result of Agrias' Stasis Sword attack. The White Knight stopped besides Ramza, steading him with a hand on his shoulder and a quick Cure spell.
"You're alright?" She asked. Ramza nodded. "Great. Leave Gaffgarion to me, help your party." She said, nodding in their direction. They were in trouble, being overwhelmed by the superior numbers of the Hokuten. Ramza wanted to take down Gaffgarion, but he knew Agrias' plan was sound. As such, he rushed past the recovering Gaffgarion, and stepped into the larger fray. The monk gave space for him, and Ramza started clashing swords with the knights, keeping them at bay to be picked off by the Mage's spells. One by one, they started falling. At the bridge, Delita also finished his opponents. Agrias was clearly being overwhelmed by Gaffgarion, but the Dark Knight was fighting against the clock. When only one knight was left, Ramza turned on his heels and rushed against Gaffgarion again; not out of rage, but because Agrias was close to being struck down. The Dark Knight was forced to abandon the finishing strike to protect himself against Ramza. In a smooth move, Agrias got up and fought besides the squire. Together, they managed to hold the powerful Dark Knight at bay until the last Hokuten knight was defeated.
"Curse you..." Gaffgarion said, as he noticed he was alone. "This is not over yet, Ramza!" He said, before fleeing. Ramza wanted to pursue, but he knew that the Princess was the priority, and he was not leaving her alone with Delita.
The two old friends stared at each other. In his eyes, Ramza searched for an answer, for something to explain Delita's action, but found nothing.
"Let the Princess with me" Delita said. "She will be safer in my care."
"What is this game you play with us, Delita?" Ramza asked.
"Game? I do no more than speak the truth. You've made an enemy of the entire order of the Northern Sky. Where would you now take her?"
Ramza flinched. He was right.
"Think, Ramza!" He continued. "This was Duke Larg's plan, and he would not act without counsel of the Queen. You cannot trust the Crown! Would you then turn to Goltana? No, that would be folly. He would only offer your heads to keep his own."
"And what, ser, would you propose to do?" Asked Agrias, who tended to Ovelia. The tone was more ironic than inquisitory - she didn't trust Delita, and Ramza didn't blame him. He, himself, was not sure he should.
"I would only do that which you, my lady, cannot."
Ramza was tired of being led around. "You speak in nothings!"
Delita took a moment to appreciate the falling waters before answering. "So I do. But pay no mind. I shall leave her with you for a while longer."
With that, he turned his back to the group, and started leaving. A flurry of thoughts rushed through Ramza's mind; Ramza never got to speak with Delita after Tietra's death, ordered by his brother. In fact, until the kidnapping, he was sure his best friend was dead. Guilt, most than anything, overflowed. Why didn't he check on Delita after the battle with Argrath?
"Delita!" He called. "I... did not think we would meet again. But I'm glad we have." He said, finally.
Delita stopped, his back still turned, and once again took a moment. From his pocket, he took out a necklace with a jewel, and looked at it against the sun. "It was Tietra. She watched over me then... As she does now."
Ovelia rose up from the ground. "Know that you go with my thanks, Ser Delita."
"Ramza..." Delita said, ignoring the Princess' remark. "I hope this meeting is not our last."
So do I... Ramza thought, as Delita left.
