Well, this was new.
Usually, houses tended to stand tall and perpendicular to the ground. However, this world flouted all architectural conventions and were actually curved. Not only that but not one single human seemed to be living in the town. Instead, it seemed to be talking animals of all sorts. Alwyn was admittedly more than a bit confused. But hey, there was a stunning lack of Heartless so that was a plus. Apparently, there was some sort of celebration going on and all sorts of games being played. Alwyn wasn't much for that but he did notice that they were selling ice cream, which perked his spirits right up. Now he was standing on a bridge, leaning on the railing as he watched some of the denizens race, eating his ice cream. However, he wasn't enjoying the racing per say. The lack of Heartless or, indeed, any monster gave him a chance to think. Sadly, all that came up were questions. The Heartless, for one thing. They were a menace found all over. It seemed Alwyn couldn't take two steps in a world without Heartless sprouting up. What did they want and how did they get so numerous? One would think that someone would be able to exterminate these guys. Did they have a master behind them? Was it Chaos? Alwyn shuddered to think it was him again. Fighting him once was bad enough, but him with new tricks up his sleeve? Alwyn would need to gather people strong enough to face him. He certainly couldn't do it alone.
And that brought his thoughts to his friends. For the first time since he had been thrown into Ivalice, Alwyn deeply missed his friends. Zest would've known what to do already. Rojo would've been right behind him, probably boasting about how he'd defeat every Heartless single-handedly. And Vani... well, Alwyn admitted that he just kinda wanted to see her again. But he also knew that she had the quiet strength to have their back, no matter what. They were heroes and Alwyn? Well, Alwyn supposed in an academic sense that he was a hero. He did help save the world, after all. But he was never cut out for that sort of thing. That was more his friends' idiom than his own. Now, however, he found himself time and again playing the hero, whether it was Ivalice or Twilight Town or Mysidia. Here he was, facing the darkness, now without his friends at his side. "So this is what it's like to feel alone." Alwyn muttered to himself as he continued eating his ice cream. Well... if he was going to be alone in this, he needed a plan. Preferably not "Plan Feel-Sorry-For-Myself". There had to be some place or someone that knew about the Heartless. Finding a weakness to them would go a long way towards finding a way to putting them down permanently. Alwyn continued to ponder things as he watched the racers go around the course, the quiet of the empty bridge being quite peaceful.
Sheesh, what would Zest say if he saw Alwyn now?

You'll be lucky too! You know, something about uninvited guests really did help to improve things around Disney Town. For one, it spruced up a good day off! For Oswald, this was certainly the case with the mysterious stranger that had just wandered into his world unannounced! Unlike most of the citizens of Disney Town, Oswald was very, very aware of the threat of Heartless and – more than that – the threat of people from other worlds turning up and causing trouble. He’d seen it before, he wanted to avoid that in his home realm at any cost. Especially since his world contained something quite important to him! He’d just kissed his wife goodbye in order to head off to the store, fully intent on buying a few beverages and other groceries for the big game tonight. Of course, the race going on was ample entertainment enough, though he hardly wanted to stop and observe himself. He had far too much to do. Waltzing along as casually as possible – he stopped only to lay eyes upon Alwyn. Yeah, he was VERY definitely the last person he expected to see around there, especially considering there was a certain amount of trouble going on lately.
The rabbit was on his way to his trolley, but diverted towards the stranger without a second thought, making his way up to him and offering the man a distant wave. If not noticed – Oswald decided to close the distance, making his way right up to the man’s side and hopping into view, leaning against the railings of the bridge, peering right at him. THAT outfit. Why did that outfit ring familiar to him?O h, yeah! A friend of his had given him the description a little while ago. Admittedly, he did think it was important to introduce himself to all prospective future companions, so he threw his hand up to wave, giddily commenting. “Heya, what’s the story, morning glory?” He narrowed his lids, smiling ever so pleasantly – yet waving an accusatory finger towards him. “Heya, I’m not one to bother an off-worlder, bub, but – uh – you wouldn’t happen to know Vani, would ya? You look like a friend of hers.” Quick to defend himself, Oswald shook his head and gave off a little chuckle.
“Uh, before I get smacked by something solid – don’t you worry. I’m no enemy of yours. I’m just your friendly, average every-day world travelling lucky rabbit. I’ve been around and stuff! Sort of – uh – picked up on plenty of heroes along the way, I guess I’m either real popular or real lucky.” He chuckled, moving to offer up his hand in order to be shaken, jovial and friendly as ever. “You can call me Oswald, pally! Welcome to Disney Town, it’s great to have someone else visit!”

Alwyn had just about finished his ice cream, the cone the only remaining of the treat. He had to admit, this was pretty good. As he considered ordering another cone, something caught the corner of his eye. He looked and there was a very animated rabbit waving excitedly at him. Alwyn wasn't exactly used to someone paying this much attention to him, though he realized that he probably should've expected this. Everyone in town seemed to be almost giddy about everything. And really nice to boot. It made the normally ostracized Black Mage very uneasy. Alwyn confusedly waved back, his cone sticking out of his mouth as he bit down on it. Then the rabbit got closer which only made Alwyn a bit suspicious. Not that he expected too much trouble, but he half expected that there was some custom he wasn't observing and he was going to have to deal with a half-hour long lecture, probably on the color of his attire. However, that wasn't it as the rabbit enthusiastically greeted him with a... well, strange greeting. Alwyn never heard that one before. "Um... I mean, nothing much, really." Alwyn then took another bite of ice cream cone when the rabbit said her name. Vani. Alwyn damn near choked on the cone in surprise, violently coughing through the rest of Oswald's introduction and explanation. Alwyn leaned on the railing and put a fist to his chest to calm himself. There was no way this was possible. After all, the search for Rojo turned out to be a bust, why was this any different? How could this rabbit come right out of the blue and mention her of all people? Memories started flooding back and Alwyn shook his head, composing himself as he looked down at his new companion.
"While I'm not exactly the type to look for trouble, I would like to know how you came by that name." Alwyn knew Vani, there was no way she'd ever talk to a talking rabbit of all things, let alone enough to have Oswald suspect that the mage in front of him knew Vani. Vani wasn't exactly the talkative type, even rivaling himself in that regard. Perhaps it was because Alwyn looked different. That could've been the reason, although that would still mean Oswald met Vani and simply extrapolated that neither of them looked like animals. It just didn't make sense and Alwyn was not about to trust someone right off the bat, even if he seemed incredibly friendly. Zest would've chided Alwyn for thinking this, but naivete can get one killed. "Look, Oswald, it's not that I don't like you or anything. But I know Vani and I doubt she'd be out in the worlds and I especially doubt that she'd open up to any strangers. Besides, I've already ran into one dead end searching for a friend. Why don't you describe her to me?" If this rabbit really met Vani, he should be able to describe her. Vani definitely had a certain look to her. However, Alwyn couldn't get his hopes up. The thought came to his mind that if Oswald was telling the truth, she was definitely in trouble with the Heartless around.

You'll be lucky too! Oswald hated to make things easy. Especially when it came to getting people to meet one another. The build up always made things a hundred times more worth it. But this? He wanted to get to know the guy first! I mean, Black Mages? Never met many of them! He’d heard they were fearsome and destructive, with plenty of utility to boot! Maybe he could learn a few spells off of them. He wasn’t too good with magic – to be honest – but he wouldn’t mind trying. There was that one time he tried the whole magician shtick. He could hardly pull a rabbit out of his hat (boy did that earn him some ugly looks) let alone summon a meteor out of nowhere. And let’s not even get started on Ultima – what even was that? Still, this guy looked pretty snazzy. And he was a cool cat at that. Maybe not too hot on the whole social interaction thing – but hey, this was Disney Town! It was all about getting into the whole community angle. He was terrible at it at first, having pretty much rampaged through the place – buuut after getting along with the neighbours, competing for a girl’s affection? Things were much better. Of course, there was nothing wrong with the guy’s colour! Oswald liked it. He was usually that colour anyway. Couldn’t wear it – the wife said it kinda blended in with him a little too well. Maybe he oculd consider a ninja outfit at some point. But…
“Hah, nothing wrong with trouble – pally – we all find it at some point. But I can tell you’re as straight as a razor! Sharp as one too, nothing escapes you. See, I was doing some backwater world exploration, that’s something I really love to do by the way…take a little vaycay, enjoy a nice drink without getting a rolling pin to the head, eh? Eh?” He playfully elbowed at the guy, making sure to not actually touch him, as he kinda gave off the aura of a guy who really loved throwing punches.
After a few moments, he relented, realizing how awkward that was.
“Well, yeah, either way – I was going over an old warzone, found her wandering about all on her lonesome. I was there all on my lonesome so I thought…hey, why not be a good neighbor and say hello? So I did! Didn’t regret it. She was a bit of a frowner at first but real reliable. Tricky too, I’ve got to say you keep some skilled and reliable company, compadre. Have to work to earn their trust, I like that. I got off this world just for the sake of that.” Oswald spoke with an intensely world-weary level of firm-nessness…the guy wasn’t just a friendly rabbit whistling dixie here! He’d been around the block more times than most people.
“Hehe, I don’t blame ya, buddy I don’t blame ya. Healthy dose of skepticism and stuff. Honestly I just want you guys to get back together, that’s about it.” He waggled his brows, hopping up onto the railing with ease and stroking his chin. “Let’s see. The doll was about your height…real long red hair, had those kinda eyes that just picked you appart the moment she met you. Kinda hard to tell, though, doesn’t do the whole emotion thing that well. But she’s kinda curious when good information rears its ugly head! And she’s a great thief. Kinda hard to get used to, not quick to trust – but, like I said…I like that.”

"Yes, well, there's such a thing as too much of a good thing." Alwyn couldn't help but feel at ease at Oswald's presence, even if he gave the rabbit a very confused look when he did his elbowing thing. Usually, overly chipper creatures caused a sense of dread and need to get to the nearest dark corner to get away from them. But it was different with Oswald. Perhaps it was a general sense of innocence he got from the rabbit. What really threw Alwyn for a loop was the rabbit saying he had been to different worlds. How was that possible? He didn't seem like he could cast magic, let alone a spell to travel to different worlds like Alwyn could. Was there an alternative means of transportation? That would be interesting to know. Most people were ill at ease to Warping to different places. Usually they expressed their dislike by vomiting. A safer, less stressful on the stomach method would help alleviate many of those concerns. Still, Alwyn was not a builder, though he was always curious about airships in general. Who wouldn't be, really? He just never had the practical experience to handle building one. Granted, he didn't really like sweating or getting dirty either, which didn't help.
Alwyn's mental rambling was suddenly ended when Oswald got around to describing Vani and how he met her. Alwyn's world came crashing down like a ton of bricks. So it truly wasn't just him out there, Vani WAS traveling the worlds as well. Which meant that that rumor about Rojo probably wasn't so implausible, after all. And if they were all traveling the worlds, Zest was probably not too far behind. Hell, he was probably the first to be taken off-world. Alwyn had to sit against the bridge railing to keep himself steady. Vani was out there... the rabbit talked wanting to get all of them back together but did Alwyn really want that? He had been living on his own just fine and now his heart was practically racing and doing cartwheels. It was hard enough trying to keep his feelings for Vani bottled up for this long but now he didn't think he could handle meeting her again, let alone his other friends. It didn't help that his memories of their times together came flooding back or at least what he was able to remember. His memory, between the incident that initially found him in front of the gates of Corneria and the time travel he had to endure, wasn't the greatest in the world. On the other side of the coin... they had to be warned about the black creatures, at the very least. If nothing else, he could do that, right? He soon found that he had been blushing ever so slightly and breathing a bit hard. Alwyn composed himself a bit before looking at the rabbit with his golden eyes. "Sorry... it's just... well, it's been awhile since I've seen my friends. It's a lot to take in. B-But, Vani, she's safe at least, right? She's not harmed in any way?" Alwyn's brain told him that he was an idiot for even asking. Vani could handle herself better than Alwyn ever could. But his heart had to make sure.
