Well, there goes that idea of trying to end this fight peacefully. Alwyn wasn't too happy that both of his negative status effect spells failed. He had hoped that he could just end the fight then and there but fate would not be as kind. The "great ninja from Wutai" mocked him in his attempt which only solicited a raise of an eyebrow from Alwyn. It was almost like they wanted the full force of his spells. Unfortunately for him, he was struck by the ice spell and doubled over from the pain. He did his best to shrug it off as he saw another shuriken come right at him. He dodged that and was just about to cast his more powerful spells. However, he noticed that Leon had closed the distance and... sheathed his sword. He also called to Yuffie to stop her. Alwyn was briefly confused until Leon explained that he had seen enough. Alwyn sighed and put away his staff, before digging into his satchel and pulling out three hi-potions. He kept one and gave the other to Leon and waving the other at Yuffie so she could come over and grab it. Alwyn then smirked at Leon's comment. "Yeah, I had to refrain a bit, too. After all, I'm sure you and the other citizens here would like a town to continue living in." He drank his hi-potion. Leon then offered to take the fight somewhere else if Alwyn wanted to, but the wizard shook his head. "I told you, I don't like fighting. And really, you probably should've done this little test there in the first place!"
Alwyn sighed. There was no point arguing about it now. What's done was done. Alwyn followed Leon, hoping Yuffie would follow along on her own, at a distance preferably. "Sorry about starting off strong. It's habit. Travel in my world isn't exactly very hospitable. This was no exaggeration. All manner of horrific creatures infested the countryside, whether it was goblins or giants or even the undead. Sure, the other worlds didn't seem to be much better off, but his world seemed to have more true monsters than actual fauna native to the lands. Then, an idea occurred to Alwyn. It seemed like a strange thing to ask, but it couldn't hurt. "So... considering your Heartless infestation... have you heard of someone named Sora. Apparently, he's supposed to be traveling with a duck and a dog. Ugh... I didn't think it could sound stupider out loud than it did in my head, but this is my life, I guess. Never mind, forget I said anything." Alwyn had to focus on what he wanted to ask Merlin or, barring that, what he needed to look for.

Yuffie couldnt react fast enough to Leon's cease and dismiss. She had already tossed her shuriken and her magic. The young ninja flinched and stumbled forward a bit as she tried to turn her foot to throw off her toss. It was enough to send it a bit off course to make it easier for Alwyn to dodge out of the way from. Her ice magic wasnt so easy to cancel. What was done was done and she couldnt change that. Her footing tossed off her balance causing the white rose to trip and fall forward onto her knees with a pout. "Some warning woulda been nice, Squall." She grumbled a bit as she pushed herself up to her feet and brushed off her clothing before recalling it back to her.
"Sorry for being so tough on ya, Alwyn. It's just something Leon does to test the newbies." Yuffie giggled as she placed her shuriken on her back. "I wouldnt have normally gotten involved. But you kinda escalated way more than expected." Alwyn seemed okay with things ending as they had, even with her ice magic hitting him. "Least he didnt make you pass out." Sora had the first time. "Makes things awkward later on and Aerith starts lecturing" The group had already started to walk away from her. "H-hey! Wait up you guys!!" The ninja shouted before darting after and catching up, jumping onto Alwyn's back. Her arms going around his neck to hold on. "Hehe! We coulda gone elsewhere, but they youd of known it was a test. That's not the fun part." She explained as she looked to make sure she had her cure materia.
It took a second but she used Cure and then her All materia to cast on all three of them, even with the potion. The green aura sprinkled down on the three as she held onto Alwyn so he could carry her. "Sora!? You know him too? Yeah! Goofy and Donald! You're talking like you don't know him. He is the keybearer after all." She babbled on as if he already knew. It was only a matter of time before Leon told her she needed to shut up. "Hes sorta helped the town a few times. He's the one that Leon knocked on his butt when he first got the keyblade. Now he can kick both our butts at the same time if he has a good day." She giggled as she continued to hold on, not knowing if Alwyn would knock her off or not. =================================== @karlos @blackwizardoflight

Leon smirked slightly but immediately went back to his same stoic face as he started walking with the mage, sure the test was not practical and if he wasn't careful people could get hurt but there was more to the test then what the mage originally saw. As Yuffie caught up and started talking more he shrugged slightly, "Sora was different..." He said making his way past the old duck who sold the sea salt ice-creams, his head inside the freezer as it always was.
"I tested Sora on his strength because I really didn't think he was suitable to wield the keyblade." But Leon was wrong about that one, of course he couldn't have known that the boy would get stronger and stronger with every battle and be able to impress him so much. "You." Leon said turning his head to look at the mage, "I wanted to see if you would put the lives of those in the marketplace above your own... When you started so strong I had my doubts but then you started to use supplementary spells instead of damaging ones.. That was when I knew that you may very well be called a Hero back in your own world." Leon picked up the pace just slightly as the two talked about Sora, he had nothing more to say on the boy but the feeling of Yuffiie's cure materia felt nice on his burns that he had gotten from the fight.
Once they got to the old borough where they first made their base in Radiant Garden, Leon stopped and turned to the pair. "Yuffie..." He said walking over to her as if he had a job for her to do but instead he placed his hand on her head and squeezed tight... "What did I say about calling me Squall?" His eyes were wide as he stared at her, an expression Leon never really had before. He would let go after a few seconds and turn back to the mage, "I don't think Merlin is home at the moment but with our watch I will let you look at his books.... At least everything we were able to bring over." He would walk over to the door and push it open, letting the mage walk in first.

Alwyn nearly fell over from the sudden addition of Yuffie's weight. It also took his entire being not to hit Yuffie in the back of the head with his staff or at least try to. He didn't really like all this touchy-feely stuff, but he had just gotten in good with these people. He might as well grin and bear it in the meantime. "Like I said, travel's tough on my world. My friends and I had a rough go of it just getting to the next town sometimes." Now his memories went to his friends, which put a bit of a frown on Alwyn's face. What were they up to now? Could they meet up again? Or perhaps they had forgotten about Alwyn? He didn't really believe that last one but they also hadn't spoken in ages. They very well could have. "Hmm... I suppose you have a point. No point in testing someone if they know what to expect." Then the conversation, thankfully, turned to the topic of Sora. Not only did they both know of him, Yuffie even named his companions. The fact that they were named Goofy and Donald made Alwyn think that they were pulling his leg, but they seemed serious about it. Then they mentioned Sora being the Keybearer and wielding a Keyblade, which only served to confuse Alwyn more. "This is all sounding pretty silly... but, I have to admit, it's not the strangest story I've ever heard. Heck, don't get me started on that Rat Tail quest..." In Alwyn's experience, the sillier a story sounded, the likelier it was to be true. Leon then talked about their test again and called Alwyn a hero, which caused the young mage to look away. It wasn't so much that he disliked it as he didn't believe he deserved it. After all, his friends were the ones who deserved the credit, he was just the guy that made things go boom.
"Look, I'm retired. I'm just someone seeking knowledge, that's all." This... wasn't entirely a lie, but not entirely the truth, either. He was seeking knowledge to become stronger, both as a mage and as a person. He needed to break his limitations and he hoped Merlin had the answer. If not... well, he endeared himself to the locals. That was something. Then Leon went to Yuffie and was pretty intimidating to her. Squall? Was there some history with that name? It was probably better not to ask. He doubted Leon would hold back if he hated that name. They then got closer to Merlin's house and Squall opened the door for Alwyn. The mage looked inside and found a machine of some sort. On the other side was an upraised bit of floor with furnishings covered in books. The table, shelves, the chair, the only reason the furnace seemed to be fine was because it was being used. Alwyn sighed and sweeped his hand through the air. Books suddenly started rearranging themselves to a more organized state and the room soon looked very cleaned up. "Well... I guess I better get started then." Alwyn said as he reached into his bag and somehow pulled out a complete tea set, with two cups for his new companions. That such a small bag carried that and didn't weigh Alwyn down any was a mystery of the universe. Or magic. After getting the tea started, he began sifting through the books dividing them into two stacks. "Hmm... no, no, no... yes... maybe, if I have the time... no, yes, no..." For the time being, he seemed lost in his own little world, with the tea being the only thing he was concerned about outside of the books.

Yuffie was greatly surprised that Alwyn didn't just dump her on her butt. The whole thing just made the ninja giggle more in reply. "Ya, you're telling me. ShinRa shot down Cloud's plane before and we had to use it as a flotation device. I got kidnapped by some major pervs and tied against a mountain. Finding out our stuff mog friend was actually a spy.. things can get a little tough. But we always find a way." She monologued. She rode on the mages back a bit before hopping off to run next to the group. She didnt want to overstay her welcome and push too much hyperactive energy on him all at once. At least Alwyn was cool with their testing him now. That was also a huge relief. "Wait... a rat tail? Yuck...." Yuffie made a pretty gross out face before sticking out her tongue.
"Dont know why you'd want knowledge. Books are kinda boring you know." Yuffie was more a woman of action than an indoor reader. She always preferred a fight to a book any day. Its why her father taught her everything he had. The ninja was happy to get back to their base came. Squall had explained a bit on why he'd decided to pick on Sora when he had back in Twilight Town so many years back.
Squall called Yuffie's name and she perked up a bit till the smile faded. She was doomed to grunt work now. She knew that look. The ninja looked up at Leon before he squeezed her head. Yuffied whined a bit at his grip. "Not to do it....but it's such a cool name." The ninja whined a bit again before he let her head go. Yuffie moved her hands to her head to rub the spots that Leon had just squeezed, tears in the corner of her eyes and a pout on her face. "You didn't have to be so rough..." She mumbled before she watched Alwyn go play with the wizard's books. Merlin probably didn't care who touched them as long as they weren't evil and that the book was okay with it. They'd smacked her more times than she could count. ============ @blackwizardoflight @karlos

[Because our Squall is no longer around, I shall continue with this thread with Yuffie. If a new person has Squall and this thread is still up and they wish to join, PM/Discord chat with me or Yuffie!]
--A few hours later--
Alwyn had scoured Merlin's library of books, reading every single one of them, page by page. The black mage had barely noticed that Leon or Squall or whoever he was had decided to leave Yuffie behind to make sure Alwyn didn't steal any of the books. Not that Alwyn was planning to steal them, since he seemed content to just read them as he drank his tea. It was probably rather boring for an outside observer but Alwyn soaked up the knowledge like a sponge. It was just another day for him and he read pretty fast, so he managed to get through a number of books in a short amount of time. However, as he kept reading and scouring through the tomes, he became increasingly frustrated. Nothing, NOTHING led Alwyn to what he was seeking. Everything was about different spell work or how to properly wave a wand or a history of wizards in some far-off world. None of them came close to unlocking hidden potential or limitations on magical spells. He even saw some spells with incredible potential but it was like a puddle of water that was just out of reach of a man dying of thirst. Alwyn could see it, he could grasp how to cast it, but actually doing so was just impossible.
When Alwyn slammed the twelfth book shut, his head dropped to the table. He took off his hat, letting his white hair out. He was exhausted and completely irritated. "Not one of them had what I was looking for. Even this Merlin guy doesn't know..." Alwyn admitted that he had hopes for Merlin knowing what was going on. But it was all for naught. How was Alwyn supposed to figure out how to bypass his limits if such a knowledgeable wizard didn't know? A thought then idly passed Alwyn's mind. The Citadel of Trials. He and his companions had to go through the monster-infested hellhole to prove their worth to Bahamut. It was designed to test Heroes. Perhaps... Alwyn needed to go back again. After all, he had his friends to help him before last time. Perhaps he hadn't quite passed the test as he believed. Alwyn shook his head. No, that couldn't be right. He had definitely passed the last time and gained new power. How else would he have beaten Chaos? Still, it was something to keep in the back of his mind.
Then the mage looked up to see Yuffie. "Sorry... you're probably bored silly from having to make sure I don't do anything stupid. Still... looks like I'm at a dead end here, too. Sorry I wasted your time, Yuffie." Alwyn got up and put everything away as it was, before bagging all of his things. He smiled at the ninja. "Still, I got to meet some friendly faces. I suppose it wasn't all bad. So... Sora, Donald and Goofy, eh? Still not really sure if you're just pulling my leg or not, but I guess I'll have to keep a lookout for them. I mean, they can't be that hard to find, right?" He wasn't entirely sure why he was going out of his way to help solve this Heartless problem, but he had a feeling it was because it was something Zest would want him to do.

Yuffie moved over once Squall left and plopped herself down on the floor near the entrance. She sat Indian style as she waited for the mage to read. Yuffie so didnt expect to be waiting there as long as she did. Alwyn read as she got antsy sitting there waiting. Squall was mad at her, so she figured it best not to annoy him any more than she already had today. Yuff had been a little bit more rambunctious than normal.
The hours past and she wiggled about a bit. Yuffie had played with her shuriken for a while. She had laid down and counted the stones in the ceiling. She had her feet propped up on the wall, humming quietly to herself before she heard the mage speak. Yuffie tilted her head back to look at him, practically upside down at the moment. Yuffie took a second to move her legs off the wall and into the doorway before popping herself back up to her feet and spinning to face Arwyn. A huge smile on her face.
"Sorry. That sucks, Alwyn. Id of so given up after the first book." The ninja replied. She giggled with his comment about being bored. Nah, youre good! I could be laying outside being bored on guard duty. At least I didnt have to find some place to hide from Leon and stuff. Friendly faces are always good." She giggled again.
Alwyn commented about Sora and the gang briefly after their chat. Yuff tilted her head a bit to the side. "No joke. I totally cant believe you dunno them. Hes kinda hard to miss. Short, big shoes. Spiky hair. Giant keyblade." She replied, totally still offput but the fact he didnt know him. "I guess its not totally weird. There are a lot of worlds. He does try and blend in wherever he goes. He cant meet EVERYONE."

Alwyn admitted, now that he was used to Yuffie, she wasn't so bad a person. It just goes to prove that you couldn't rely on first impressions. Once he had all of his things gathered, he smiled at Yuffie. "Yeah, I just wish I saw friendly faces a bit more often, sometimes. Seems everywhere I turn, it's Heartless, Heartless, Heartless." Alwyn sighed and scratched the back of his head. "But at least there's more people fighting these things." However, an idea suddenly occurred to the mage. "Heeeyyy... actually, maybe there is a way I can repay you guys for helping me out. My friends are out in the worlds somewhere, too. They might not be able to live here and join you guys fully, but they're good people and strong warriors. There's Zest, who you can't miss. Guy dresses like a knight right out of fairy tales. Granted, he's a bit... naive, I guess the word is, but he's a sworn enemy of the Darkness. Then there's Rojo, who you'll know because he will tell you his name and how great he is every two seconds. Trust me, you probably won't get in a word edge-wise with him without it turning into a tale about whatever monster he thinks he slew single-handedly. Despite the massive ego, occasionally he can back up his words with sword and magic.""Then there's Vani..." Alwyn trailed off at the memory of her, looking off to the side. Then he shook his head, getting his thoughts together. "She's not really the trusting type and pretty quiet. But she's the most loyal person you could ever meet and stronger in her own right. My friends are good allies to have. You see them, you've got my word that they'll help you guys out." Alwyn then walked out of Merlin's house, standing just inside the doorway. "Anyways... thanks for the help. Hope you guys manage to rebuild everything." Alwyn then tapped his staff on the ground and he Warped away, disappearing in a burst of light.

"Yeah heartless kinda suck... but if ya need us, were always here to help out!" Yuff grinned as she rocked back and forth on her feet. She nodded when he listed off his friends. "Zest, white knight. Rojo, huge ego. Vani, cute but quiet. Got it! Ill tell them I met ya!" She nodded a few times as he moved outside the hut. She skipped out a bit after him, hands clasp behind her back as she did.
"Anytime! Sorry I totally couldnt be more help! Nice meeting you!" The warping totally made her blink as she tilted her head and looked around before leaning forward to look on the roof or nearby. "....Huh? Where'd he go?"
