Edgar felt the relief when they called the match. He really did not feel that had gotten into battle all that much. Yet, he could admit that Cloud certainly had the strength to have won the match. The true irony came from the fact that the coloring contest weighed more than the actual fight. It made the kind shake his head a bit in confusion. Not that he minded at all. It was such a relief to know that the girl was out of the match and that she might be safe now. The last thing he wanted was an innocent harmed in something like this. Though, he was sure that Cloud believed he could keep her safe, Edgar wasn't as convinced. Yet, the boy was strong and would have likely won the match. However, the risk that he couldn't keep her completely safe was too high for Edgar to believe. It was slightly frustrating.
Once the match was called, the King had stood and placed his weapon back in it's rightful place. He was truly surprised they'd made it this far. The ruling was given and Locke and himself were to be advancing to the next stage of the tournament. Honestly, he was growing weary of continuing this. He wished to just find his way home on his own. But that was just wishful thinking. They needed the recognition from this tournament to be able to gather information to get home. A champion could certainly sort things out and convince people to give him information.
His eyes moved over to the young girl that they had challenged before he patted Locke's arm and shifted over to apologize to her. He felt a tad bit guilty for treating her like a child. Though, he would have done it again without a second thought. So, maybe he wasn't all the guilty. "My apology for snapping at your father during out match. I'm usually quite level headed. You just reminded me of a friend of mine. She also liked coloring and painting... But you did well! You certainly gave Locke a fun for his money." He smiled. Anyone who wants to join that's in, or was in, the tournament may enter this thread! tag: Marlene Wallace, @locke, @cloudywolf, @redmage

She had listened to the judges after the signal for the end of the round, and though she was somewhat disappointed that they couldn't continue, she was glad that it was over, too. She hadn't realized when she had begged Cloud to let her sign them up that it was a real fight thing. She had thought it was part of the happy celebrations in this cute little town. While she could understand that a tournament really was part of celebrating, it wasn't the kind she knew or liked. She preferred celebrations that didn't involve people fighting; that happened enough back on The Planet, and after the first round's scary events, she hadn't really wanted to have to fight people for more rounds...though it was Cloud who had had to do the actual fighting. This thought weighed a bit heavy on the girl, as she had come to terms with the fact that she still had a ways to grow before she could be like Cloud, or kick butt like Tifa.
When the announcements were over, and the crowd departed some to get snacks or whatever before the next round, Marlene had watched Cloud head off, probably to clean up or take a break; he did this sometimes after fighting or even when working on Fenrir..both got people messy. She looked back at her drawing, and then across the table to Locke, offering a hand to him with a smile. He had been a good opponent, and she recognized this, even though neither had shown their full drawings yet.
"I am glad we could have this duel of crayons, and thank you for being so nice. You're a nice man, Mister Locke."
She turned her head upward to look at Edgar when he approached their table, and at first she felt like being stubborn and arguing (as ever) that she wasn't simply a child, but she held her thoughts in check. He was apologizing, and she could accept that he was somewhat knowledgeable (probably) on such subjects as children and fighting. Hazel eyes considered him for a moment, and she stood from her chair, offering him a hand in congratulations, a move that seems much more mature and adult than her age shows.
"My father would want me to kick butt, he does. Cloud is a good Dad too, but I think he had a rough deal entering this with me.. I wish I could have done more. I should have brought more things to throw."

It appeared that they were moving on, Locke wasn't sure what to make of these matches thus far. The duo in the first round were annoying at best, but showed they were truly powerful foes. Practically fighting two espers at once, then this round... he wasn't sure where to place it on the spectrum. Regardless, the judges gave them the match when they reached the time limit. He had hoped to draw some more, maybe turn the coloring contest into something else. Coloring wasn't exactly his forte.
Looking at the girl in question, Locke suddenly felt some patting on his arm from his comrade. Edgar was moving over and started to apologize to the girl. The treasure hunter followed his friend over the Marlene, "it was nice to have something else for a change. Considering the entire war back home we went through and now all these fiends across places," Locke responded while patting the girl on her head, "perhaps the thought of entering a fighting tournament after all that is an odd choice of itself. Do you know anything of 'world travel'?"
Locke figured he could make use of the situation to ask some questions. Also having a kind conversation with a child felt better than trying to ask stuff to most adults. A lot of them just kept to themselves, like the child's father... who happened to not be her father? That Cloud person seemed like someone that kept to himself mostly. "Is your real father here nearby too?" he asked curiously, understanding that Cloud was something else in this regard. made by kiwii at btn! rebuild by metus at khmm! | |

Edgar watched the small girl closely as she sat and watched him for a moment. Honestly, he was expecting a mini tantrum. Relm and Gau liked to have one from time to time. Instead, the young girl stood and offered him a hand. The King smiled softly, accepting it and shaking it carefully. He didn't want to be too tough on the kid. After all, he had jump through hoops to protect her as best he could. That's when Marlene spoke up. So, Cloud wasn't her actual father. Well, it made sense. They didn't look very similar anyway. "I'm sure you'll do better when you're a bit older, if it's something you really want to do... I'd prefer not to, personally. We're only doing this to get our names out there to be able to find out information." He admitted.
His eyes flicked to Locke as he asked about world travel and if her actual father was nearby. His eyes scanned the area. It didn't seem likely. He doubted her real father would have allowed her to even enter. "...I'm sure that she's not too versed in world travel. Though, I'm honestly more curious about the magic aspect..." He mumbled a bit toward the end as he touched his hand to his mouth in thought, drifting off a bit.

Marlene looked around at the people who had gathered to watch the match who were now standing around talking, apparently waiting on the next match's opponents to prepare. So this was a good time to be talking and taking a break; or making new friends. She smiled up at Locke when he patted her head, and at Edgar, too. She was surprised by the mention of a war, and she wondered if it had been anything like what had happened to the Planet during the fighting between Shinra and the 7th Heaven crew, as well as the destruction Sephiroth, that bad bad man, had brought down upon their homes. The question of her real father being around nearby made her smile; if he had been, she might not have been allowed in the tournament.
"Well, it's kind of an odd situation I guess; Cloud and Tifa and Denzel and I are all a family. My Dad is away taking care of things, so I live with Cloud and Tifa usually. If he had been here I might not have been allowed to compete... But sometimes he surprises people so maybe I might have been... It hard to tell sometimes."
Her hazel eyes sparkled with curiosity at the statements about finding information, magic, and world traveling.
"I don't know what kind of information you need, but I have done some unexpected traveling, sometimes it's random where I end up, sometimes it's a place I've been before. I don't know why it happens, but it does. Can you control how you get around?"
She tilted her head curiously, wondering how others got around without randomly appearing places.
