The portal opened up into a pathway surrounded by trees blanketed by the night sky. The air was cool and crisp as it tugged at that mercenary’s clothing gently an ruffled his hair a bit. He stood quietly at the edge of this path looking around, trying to find out if this place was familiar to him. However, it wasn’t. This place was another new location to him and like with anything new, the mercenary would step forward with the intent to explore the place and figure out why he was where he was.
Pushing himself away from the portal that snapped shut, the mercenary would venture further down the path listening to the quiet whisper of the wind as it passed through the trees above. He would continue to walk with only the sound of his footsteps as company taking note that for a forest it was awful quiet. He wondered where all the animals were and why it was this place seemed to stick out from a normal forest. Moving even further in he would eventually come to a clearing and stop as he found himself in the middle of a circle of trees each with a strange shape upon that looked almost like doors.
A heart, fireworks, a tree, a turkey, a pumpkin and more. What was this? A strange collection of what appeared to be doors in the middle of a forest? Now why was that? Blinking slowly, Deshi would observe each before wandering over to the door with the turkey on it. He’d reach out a hand to open the door only to pause as he noticed his hands had claws upon them. Eh? He blinked some more as he examined his hand and then the rest of himself discovering his clothing had changed to something a bit more worn and bandaged like. He had a tail, cat like ears and fangs in his mouth too! He wasn’t sure exactly what this was all about, but maybe this was the whole blending in with the world magic he had heard whispers of. Huh. He had never ran into a world that did that before, so the experience was quite odd and made him more curious as to what sort of residents actually lived here….provided there was actual civilization around.
Hmm. That aside though back to this turkey door on the tree. Yes, yes. Let’s see what was behind it.

Halloween was coming up soon and Jack was coming up short on ideas! It was normally a year-long plot, an attempt to make this year bigger and better than last but the recent troubles with the heartless and the return of Oogie AGAIN had left the pumpkin king occupied with seemingly bigger plots... These heartless... They were vicious, cold creatures that hunted without remorse, beings that Jack would normally find nothing less than reprehensible... were it not for their appearance... The perfect things to help him jump-start Halloween this year... that is if he could find a way to control them... From his various encounters, Jack knew they were not to be reasoned with or talked too... Like animals, they didn't understand language... but perhaps he could TRAIN them...
As he plotted and pondered, Jack walked through the deep, gnarled forest on the outskirts of town, a long bony finger tapping his chin, his brow furrowed, his stance slightly hunched... His movements were deathly quiet as his absurdly long legs glided across the dry, twig-covered ground.
It was only when he sensed movement up ahead did he look up from his thoughts, Jack spotting a stranger pondering the Thanksgiving door with his back to the patron deity! The skeleton blinked, shocked that someone he hadn't yet seen had made it here, to his world... but had also gotten past the town to arrive here! He supposed nobody noticed them? Perhaps they were all too busy with preparations... Strange... WELL! He couldn't just have someone barging into other holidays, let alone allow them to slip into his without first submitting to the right of passage!
Slowly, a wide, nefarious grin stetched across Jack's lips as he began to slowly walk backwards the way he'd come just as quietly, fading into the everlasting shadow and fog that touched Halloween...
As Deshi reached for the door to investigate it, he would suddenly feel a collection of long, spindly fingers wrap around his wrist, fingers connected to an arm almost as thin, seemingly enveloped in a striped black suit nearly as thin as the arm it covered. The arm trailed off into the black, several feet taller than the man himself. One... then two orbs of fire lit from the black, blue... cold surprisingly, but lit up the surrounding face of Jack Skellington from his eye-sockets! The instant his face was visible, Jack would LUNGE at Deshi, his jaw dropping inhumanly low as he let out a monstrous shreak that RIPPED asunder the natural silence of the forest!
From there, he would step out into the light, revealing his lanky, disproportionate form to the newcomer!
Internally, Jack was smiling in anticipation, just WAITING for Deshi to flip out! He had taken great lengths to keep himself hidden! Hopefully they paid off!

He was pretty focused on the door, his clawed hand reaching out towards the shinny nob at the center of the turkey. Outside of the natural sounds of the mostly silent area, the mercenary’s sensitive ears would not pick up any sounds from the other that was in the area. So unaware, he continued to do what he was doing until…something grabbed him.
Tensing, the mercenary automatically looked to the wrist that was grabbed, eyebrows furrowing as he saw the hand that rested upon it. It was a skeleton hand, but there was no body? His eyes searched the dark for answers, but none were found. Not exactly liking this, the mercenary was on the edge of moving his other hand to get the hand off, but would pause mid action when light caught his eyes and he looked up again. To the display that was given, the mercenary’s face remained devoid of emotion as he watched the strange face come into view. It wasn’t until the whole jaw drop and scream thing had occurred that mercenary acted. While he did not scream, he instinctively yanked his arm from the bony grasp before hopping back to get distance between him and the strange creature.
He would land on the ground tensed with the fur on his tail standing on end and his ears folded back. He bared fangs at the intruder as he poised his body ready for an attack. He didn’t know what sort of fiend this was, but he would damned if he was about to let it kill him!

Well... that didn't go as expected. Deshi easily ripped himself free of Jack's grasp, crouching low into an offensive stance before the Pumpkin king! Although he was more than confident in his abilities, the ol' king-o-fear wasn't here to fight! This was a time to be festive, not hostile! When the man took his posture, Jack instantly held up his hands as if surrendering right there, his face contorting into one of concern! He shot up to his full, inhuman height, offering a smile to the poor guy as he took a slow step towards him.
"Woah, woah! Hey! Let's not get violent here!" Jack chuckled nervously. "You're new here right? As the Pumpkin King, it's my duty to welcome you in the only way I know how! You... do know where you are, right?" The skeleton looked over the newcomer... how... strange he appeared... It was almost like how Sora, Donald and Goofy did on their first trips through. They were so out of place but... in place at the same time... It's a strange way to describe it but... It's the best he could do. Jack looked over Deshi curiously, specifically he feline features... Yeah... Not creepy enough to be a resident...
"This is Halloween Town forest!" Jack introduced, stepping closer again and spreading his arms wide, gesturing to the twisted veil of branches and winding trunks! He now stood beside the turkey door, his movements seemingly natural... but deliberate. He wanted to keep that person as far from the doors as possible so not to repeat his mistakes in getting involved with other holidays! Sure, sometimes he took unsolicited vacations to Christmas Land, but never for too long and only to get advice! If every other person were suddenly hopping into places where they don't belong well... there would be chaos!
"So! My name is Jack. Jack Skellington!" His long, thin-as-paper frame bent low, a long arm crossing over his mid-section as he bowed low. "How about I take you on a tour of the town, huh? Let me tell you, you'll never find a place of better scares and nicer people!"

He was ruffled to say the least. His fear turning into a defense mechanism as soon as he found himself face-to-face with a being that could very well be hostile. As he took his posture and bared his fangs, he took note that the behavior of this strange fiend changed quite quickly. The hands went up in the surrender position and the fiend spoke?
It took a moment for the mercenary to calm, the bared fangs slowly disappearing as he tilted his head at the creature. He would listen to what the creature said, slowly shaking his head as his stance relaxed a bit. “No I do not know where I am,” the mercenary would respond in soft tones before blinking a bit as he found himself being studied by what he can only deem to be a skeleton. Flicking his tail lightly, he would raise a hand to scratch at his ear as he frowned a bit. “So you welcome people by almost giving them a heart attack?” he would ask instinctively sniffing at the air as he tried to get a better grasp on what was before him as he fell silent a bit.
Well at least the skeleton didn’t smell like decay, so that was good. Though he wasn’t too sure how much he trusted this one just yet. He still resembled a fiend, so he supposed he would wait and see how things turned out. Though for the moment they seemed to be going fine. The skeleton would tell him where they were as he moved closer and in turn the mercenary would move back a step keeping the distance between them even as his eyebrows slowly raised at the words and the action.
“Halloween Town?” he would ask before humming as he folded his arms a bit and tapped his lip in thought with a claw. “Well, Mr. Skellington. I suppose a tour of the place would be nice,” the mercenary would say before giving the other a fangy grin. “I’ll try to behave myself then, if scares are part of this tour.” After all he didn’t want to harm anyone or anything that wasn’t a threat. “Also my name is Deshitana. Or Deshi if you prefer,” he’d finish before relaxing completely as he took a step closer to the skeleton.
“So, Mr. Skellington. What is with these doors?” he would ask looking back at the turkey one the skeleton was now beside. Was he protecting that door or just standing there? Hmm.

"Eheh! Please, don't call me 'mister.' It's just Jack. I'm not into all the formal malarchy, you get it." The pumpkin-king rose to his full, terrifying height, smiling down at the little cat-boy. "Oh, don't worry! The rest of the town is too motivated in preparation for the big day coming up! Since I already treated ya to your scare of the day, they'll probably leave you alone!" As Deshi introduced himself, Jack only grinned wider, his smile almost seeming to slice his face in half! That was one of the perks being the patron of Halloween! Even when you're trying to be accomadating, you come off as creepy. Ah, he loved his job...
"It's nice to meet you, friend! I hope your stay here will fill you with more spooks and frights than ever! MORE importantly though, I hope you have a good time during your stay!" It was then the curious cat would question the nature of the mysterious Tree-doors, Jack letting out a slightly nervous laugh as he glanced between each of them before returning to his guest.
"WELL! Lets just say that they're important the same way Halloween town is and just leave it at that, shall we?" Jack asked, extending a long, spindly arm out, wrapping around the cat's shoulders, attempting to guide him away from those quirky little doors. Everyone in town knew to keep away... he certainly hoped that Deshi was getting the message! Jacky boy knew how enthralling other Holidays could be, how easy it could be to just... take over for a day! Even now, Jack felt the temptation to just... slip into Christmas Town for a moment, breath in the different air, take in the different environments... but if he did... He might just feel the need to dawn his Sandy-suit again! He couldn't afford such luxuries! Not while the deadline of his own job was impending!
"Come with me! I'll show you around!" The Skeleton offered, gently pulling Deshi along back out of the forest along the path that lead back to town! Jack's stride would be stunted, is long legs moving slowly in an effort to match Deshi's natural pace so that he didn't have to keep up with Jack's normal leisurely stroll!
"So! Where are YOU from?" He inquired curiously as the two of them made their way out of the forest and into the hills, the massive twisted cliff arching towards the moon in the distance. Ahead of them, the town was alight with busy works... Even from here, Jack could make out the bigger projects from the massive spiders spinning their web-nets to Finklestein's machines helping make a VERY special construct that almost looked like an arch from here... Jack paused for a moment, looking on in awe... The good doctor really knew how to get things done! He just put that order in yesterday!
"There's home right there!" Jack pointed off in the direction of Halloween Town, its light a beacon in their world's permanent misty grey.

“I understand, Jack,” the mercenary would say as he gave a small smile back to the grinning skeleton still unsure how much he trusted the creature, but at the same time knowing he was not about to kill it. The skeleton while tall and intimidating did not seem to phase the mercenary much pass the small scare he had given him earlier. Now standing calmly amongst the trees, the cat like mercenary would flick his tail as he listened to this curious skeleton speak.
“The pleasure is mine and well your home seems rather appealing. I look forward to seeing more of it and its residents,” the mercenary would say as his eyes followed any movement the other made, including the one where the skeleton mentioned the doors and tried to lead him away. Despite how ruffled the mercenary was when he was startled, he would not resist the touch and would actually fall in step with the other though he did look back at the doors over his shoulders as he left. Thanks to the skeleton’s words he was more curious about what rested beyond each one, but he supposed that was something he would have to explore perhaps when he wasn’t being watched by said skeleton who seemed to want to keep him away from the attractive doors. “Mmm. If you say so,” he would say as he looked away from the doors and back to the path ahead they were currently on.
They would seem to be moving out of the forest and elsewhere that would for now keep the mercenary’s interest. He might’ve walked on in silence, but the talkative skeleton would keep him engaged enough with conversation via the questions he asked.
“I am from a place far from here and much less focused on scaring folk too,” the mercenary would say with a slight smirk up at the skeleton that walked at his side. “Tell me Jack. What is the importance of your home outside of scaring people? Are you in charge of something?” he would ask as he scanned the changing landscape around them.
He’d eye the twisting cliff that rose towards the moon, thinking about how lovely the view up there must be in this strange world and how nice it would be to sit there for a bit to think. Passing that his eyes would focus on the town ahead and the work that seemed to be going about. Catching glimpse of the strange arch, the mercenary would tilt his head at it curious.
“Your town looks like it is quite busy preparing for something,” the mercenary said as a pale finger tapped his lip gently as his eyes took in all the sights he was seeing.

Jack looked at Deshi like he was from another world (which, in fact he was) when he asked what the purpose of scaring people was. His empty eye-sockets grew wide and his lips pursed as the tall, lanky skeleton stared down at the cat-man, trying to read him and gauge whether or not that was a serious question. He looked sincere enough... Perhaps they didn't have Halloween where he came from...? If that were true... WHAT AN UTTER TRAVESTY! HOW COULD THIS GUY SUFFER THE EMPTINESS OF LIFE WITHOUT THE GREATEST HOLIDAY COMING TO FULFILL IT!? Jack's smile returned in a flash, almost as if it never left!
"The reason is in the name, my clueless friend!" Jack chuckled, stretching out a long arm to gesture to the town below. "This is Halloween town! We are all about the spooks and scares that make life worth living! One cannot truly appreciate one's life without experiencing the terror and fear of a good, friendly scare!" Jack would lead them down the hill and into the valley within which the town sat, passing through the fields of dead, gray wheat and grass, the smell of decaying plant-life bringing a content grin to the Pumpkin king. When Deshi asked if he was "in charge", Jack chuckled lightly, almost amused by the question! He never saw himself as "In charge" as it were! He knew he had influence in the town! After all, everyone looked up to him. EVEN THE MAYOR consulted him on nearly all decisions! However, he didn't RUN Halloween Town persay. The people did while he sat up in his manor, plotting the next holiday... He was a... coordinator if anything... The guy who got things done.
"Why, I'm the Pumpkin King! The Titan of Terror! The Crier of Creeps! The Summoner of shivers! I am the guy that brings all the things dark and scary to life! I'm the monster in your closet... The shadows in your hall... Every nightmare you ever had! YEEEHEHEHEHEHEEEEEE!" He invoked, his voice low, haunting, as if the howling cold winds of Halloween itself spoke through him... The Darkness around him fluctuated, toying with the light to create the illusion of Jack growing taller... larger... as if he was more of a monster than he was! "But no. I'm not in charge." And like that it was gone, his voice returning to it's cheerful, go-lucky manner, his form returning to normal. "The town as a mayor and he runs the official matters! I'm just... a guy who does things that's best for the town!" Speaking of which... As the two of them drew closer, Jack noticed his guest eyeing the half-finished arch, nodding as he observed how the town seem focused on it.
"Yyyyyup! That's right!" Jack confirmed clapping his bony hands together. "Tell me, kiddo! What do you know about beings known as 'heartless?'"

It would seem the question about scares took the other off guard, but to be frank the mercenary wasn’t brought up around holidays at all, especially not one that was designed to scare. For him fear meant something bad was lurking about or something new was about to occur. None of his idea of the matter equated to fun in the sense this one was talking about. It was all very confusing to be honest, causing the mercenary to furrow his brow in thoughts.
“So the fear and screams you talk of is a good thing? I always thought outside of something knew fear was a bad thing that caused misery versus joy,” the mercenary would say as he continued to follow the skeleton throw the shifting landscape all around. He would take in the strange scents of the world not exactly finding the smell of decay welcoming, but then again not saying anything either as he took note that the other with him took pleasure in the smell. Maybe, this was because the other was part of this world that it occurred. He wasn’t too sure, but wouldn’t linger too much on the matter either as he refocused on the skeleton as he answered the “in charge” question he had posed earlier.
Watching the display of changing sizes and how the darkness played around the skeleton as the other spoke, the mercenary would find a small smile creeping across his face as he watched it all with amusement versus hostility. Perhaps he was getting used to the other or maybe learning that scaring was just the thing the other did. Whatever the case was, the mercenary decided that the strange skeleton was not something to kill and so would instead seek to understand the stranger and his ways.
Hearing all he said, the mercenary would tap his lip with a pale finger in thought. “With all those names I would think you ruler of this place despite a mayor being in place to run things. It seems you have much on your plate for someone who just does his best.” The mercenary would muse as he pondered the skeleton for a bit longer. Was this one just being humble in saying he wasn’t in charge around here or what? It was a mystery, he probably wouldn’t be cracking at that moment.
Speaking of mysteries, it seemed the mystery of what was being planned would be left unanswered to, the skeleton only confirming that something was being planned but not the what. Perhaps the mercenary would’ve probed more about this, but in the end found his mind shifted to something different as he was asked a different sort of question.
Frowning a bit, the mercenary would shake his head at the mention of them. “Heartless are…a pain the ass. They attack others and cannot be reasoned with. On top of this there is no end to them in sight and they appear everywhere. I see them as pests more than anything,” the mercenary would begin before looking up at the other. “Do you guys have a heartless problem needing to be taken care of?”

"Oh boy... How do I explain this..." Jack muttered to himself, completely taken aback by Deshi's lack of understanding! What a poor sheltered life this boy must've lived... If he couldn't even comprehend the fun to be hand in a good scare or two... How could he ever enjoy himself here in this town? It sounded like the PERFECT job for Jack... but he wasn't sure if it was something he could put into words! It was like trying to explain the concept of 'love' to a child... which Jack had also been failing at in fantastic fashion regarding his children but HEY! He was trying! "That chill down your spine..." He whispered, his voice carrying on the whispy wind that blew through the town. "That tightening in your chest... That blast of adrenaline that fills you with strength... It's like that... But also the wind-down afterwords, knowing that, in the end, you're safe! It's the same as playing a prank on someone... Harmless, meant to evoke laughs all around... if that makes any sense." Jack's fingers scratched at his skull, their pointed tips lightly slipping across it's bare, smooth surface. "I guess it's sort of an... 'acquired taste' huh...? It's hard to explain... It's like something I am verses something that I can just... write out on a board..." Jack turned back towards his cat-guest and smiled kindly, shrugging his shoulders in resignation. "I'm sure that if you spend enough time here you'll see what I mean! Nobody here wants to hurt you, this I can promise. They just want to make you grin and smile as we do!" As the two of them continued to make their way into town, Deshi remarked that with ALL Jack's glorious titles, one would think he'd at least BE the Mayor! At that, Jack guffawed loudly, chuckling at all that! WELL! One doesn't have to have subjects to be a king! He's... just the best at what he does! It's like calling someone the "master" of something! Jack never sought control over the towns-people... even if it's only as much as they chose to give him. He was just the guy people tended to go to when things went haywire! "Eheh! Well! I guess people look up to me, that's true!" Jack acknowledged with a chuckle, rolling the eyes he didn't have. "I don't think I'd... govern well... After all, they do keep electing the Mayor! BUT! I do plan out each and every Halloween and with gusto and people seem to like that! Who am I, the Pumpkin King, to disappoint them?" With that, the two of them entered the town through the front gate, the various monsters and ghouls far too busy with their own affairs at the moment to pay Deshi too much attention! As far as they were concerned, he was a guest of Jack's! Zombies lumbered around with buckets of screws and nails on their backs, Mummies wrapped and taped pieces of the arch in place, Skeletons and bats worked on the high-parts of the arch and even Finklestein's monsters were helping feed electricity into the machine! The only one missing was Sally... Where was she... and the kiddos for that matter? Where they out snail-hunting...? At this hour...? Hm...
The Skeleton ran his hand along the smooth metal face of the unfinished Arch as he asked Deshi for his views on the heartless. Yes, indeed they were pests... He agreed with that assessment entirely. When they last came to visit, they made a mess of his town, made Oogie (of all people) immensely more powerful and even threatened dear ol' Sandy Claws! What fiends would incapacitate a jolly ol' gremlin like Sandy to steal his holiday?? ... Completely oblivious to the answer of that question, Jack turned back to face Deshi, his smile growing devious, a shadow falling over his features. "Well... I plan to fix that." He informed, gesturing to the machine behind him with a wide sweep of his arm. "You see... this Arch... it will be a gateway for these things to come through but only one at a time! I intend to capture one... to train it to work for me! They CAN'T be too hard to teach, right? After all, Oogie Boogie managed to get a couple to follow him around! If he can do it, I certainly can!" Jack's smile grew wider... "I have so much in mind.... This Halloween will be bigger than any ever before! Even I don't know how I'll top this one!"

He would listen to the other with curiosity as his mind tried to swim through this concept of Halloween. So according to the skeleton Halloween was about scaring others, but not to the effect of making one cry or run away, but rather smile and laugh instead. The concept was a little confusing to be sure considering the mercenary had never ran into such a thing in his life. Maybe that was because he traveled around so much and didn’t settle in places to learn such things…or maybe said places didn’t have such holidays? He was unsure, but this was definitely the first for him when it came to Halloween.
“So it is like a game then?” he would ask as he looked back up at the smiling skeleton with an child like innocent that should not be present in an adult, but was. It showed that despite the man’s age and seriousness, there were some key things missing in the man’s development along the way thus despite not knowing things he should know, he loved to learn. And learning he was as he continued to walk along with the other.
That aside, the mercenary would look back over at his companion as he laughed at the idea of him being the leader of this place. The mercenary would smile at the answer given. “Well a happy town is a good thing. I am glad you aim to make them happier rather than miserable in some way.” Like some leader like figures could do. It was a nice change up from the usual political air he found himself dealing with in other places when running into people with important roles in their world. As they entered the town, his dark colored eyes would scan the strange houses as his eye caught sightings of beings more twisted and strange than the skeleton he walked with; however, they did not attack. In fact, some waved at them as they passed by as if a strange cat creature and skeleton walking was a normal day occurrence! How strange and yet comforting at the same time. This place had a strange effect on the mercenary as it made him feel safe enough to relax and not attack everything on sight.
Finding himself liking the place, the mercenary would look around the place with a curious view before being quickly pulled back to reality when the other mentioned his least favorite creature in the world at the moment – Heartless. To what the skeleton was saying about the Heartless, the mercenary would frown in thought as he looked over at the arch.
"I respect your enthusiasm and idea here, but Heartless are wild creatures that may not be able to be tamed. What do you plan to do if that occurs?” He was curious alright. Curious in the whole idea. If a Heartless could be tamed this could be the answer to the problem of millions around the worlds out there, but even so could a creature that came from the dark like that really be trained? Did it have the capacity to learn or was it some mindless creature that had only the purpose of destroying? Hmm…

"Oh! I know!" Jack assured with a smile, his gaze turning upon the cat-man once again. "They've caused some trouble for me before, let me tell you! But they way they look and act... So... sinister and haunting... This is the kinda stuff that we NEED for Halloween! Yes, there may be some bumps in the road along the way but hey... Can't make a jack-o-lanturn without carving a few pumpkins!" Deshi made the rather rational argument that there was a chance the heartless couldn't BE taught but Jack merely dismissed that idea! What evidence did they have that those things couldn't be trained? After all, they clearly WANTED something! Otherwise they wouldn't be doing anything! All Jack had to do was find what that was, get enough of it to account for error and then let the magic happen! It was a fault of the skeleton, disregarding all reason, seeing it only as a hindrance to his plans... He could be quite rash sometimes... It was only a matter of discovering WHEN he was rash... and when he wasn't.
"Oh, nonsense!" Jack chuckled, waving a hand as if dismissing the cat's concerns. "Everything has it's price and anything can be taught! Why, even fish can be encouraged to swim through hoops if they are lured there enough! It's just a matter of patience." He tapped the side of his head with his boney finger. "Besides, I've seen them work for people before! Now I just need them to work for me!"
A small flash of doubt did touch the king's features, his hand slowly drifting down to take his chin between his fingers...
"The only sticky part of this plan, though, is HOW! I can't just go around handing them hearts! People need those! I'm just gonna have to come up with a substitute... Or rather... the doctor will have to come up with a substitute..."

"They may continue to cause you trouble if you willing let them in. Even one at a time they can be quite the handful," the mercenary would begin with a light huff unable for the moment to return the other's smile or optimism about the whole matter. While it was true he could be wrong about his doubts, he just didn't see how these strange beast could be tamed. Even if one could be captured, what was stopping it from just causing havoc no matter how much it was supposedly trained. Sure he could see the appeal of such a thing, but at the same time he had to wonder if the other wasn't thinking this through fully. This idea while delightful on paper may turn around and be a true terror when put into action.
Despite his misgivings and even expressing his concerns, the skeleton seemed to believe the Heartless could be trained with enough patience; however, this only made the mercenary frown more. "Maybe the reason they worked for others is because they offered them destruction or some other form of horror that cannot be so easily replaced," the mercenary would begin and then pausing in thought he would continue.
"If the offer is a heart do really think you can fool or make them happy with a substitute?" What if the Heartless didn't accept that and just flat out attacked. What then? The mercenary had to admit he did have many doubts about where this was going. Many doubts indeed....but at the same time a curiosity too to see if maybe this could work.

"Now now, don't be silly!" Jack chuckled, laughing off Deshi's concern. "How can someone offer an animal something as abstract as destruction? That's just crazy!" The cat-boy pressed onward, however, instead asking how the skeleton would POSSIBLY replace a heart with a substitute offering? Jack only smiled at that... It was such an obvious and simple question! "Why, but analyzing one, of course! Anything can be analyzed and replicated! All it takes is a smart enough guy and the resources to do it! Why, if I didn't know better, I'd think you were starting to doubt ol' Jack!" He chuckled again, gazing up at the massive archway. "I got the good doctor working on it was we speak! I have every confidence he'll be able to figure out the secrets of the heart. After all, he is a scientist." Jack's expression then turned serious, turning away from his greatest creation and fully facing this newcomer. Now was the time to get down to business. A lotta random people have been hopping in and out of Halloween Town, never sticking around long enough to help nor to do... well... anything really! It sometimes even frightened the inhabitants of the town with how many strangers were walking by. Jack just couldn't let anyone wander around town anymore, though... For their safety as well as everyone else's
"SO! I have a few questions for you, buddy!" Jack exclaimed, gesturing forward for Deshi to walk with him. "How did you get here... to my world I mean!"

"Anything can be offered if you're smart enough and know how to offer it," the mercenary would respond before becoming quiet to listen to what the other had to say about replicating a heart. He would hear the words, humming a bit as he folded his arms a bit in thought. "Analyze one? Well where do you plan to get one to analyze?" the mercenary would ask as he looked up at the other with a curious eye. This guy wasn't planning on sacrificing someone for this was he? Hmmm... Maybe not, but still the question did remain. As for that doubt question.
The mercenary would rub the back of his head a bit as he gave the other a sheepish smile. "I doubt many things, Jack, but this time I question because I am wondering if such a feat could be pulled off. This is the first I've seen of an effort to try and tame these creatures. I am...quite intrigued to be frank." And so he was. Even though he had his doubts about it working, he did at least want to see this through and see if Mr. Skellington could even pull off what seemed impossible. He certainly had confidence in the project and the people he had working on it, so maybe it wouldn't be as bad as his mind imagined it? Hmmm. He guess he'd simply have to wait and see.
That aside, the conversation would wander away from the grand plan and turn towards the mercenary as the skeleton decided to ask him some questions. To the one that was posed the mercenary would stop in his tracks as he thought how to explain it. "I suppose its like teleporting. I open a portal, step in, and go to an area that catches my interest when I travel the path way of darkness. Not too sure how to explain it simpler than that," the mercenary would say with a shrug as he flicked his tail and continued to follow the skeleton around.
