A gentle yawn eeked out of the black feline washing the counter, getting his lovely little restaurant prepared for the start of this bright morning here in the Sector 8 plate. The tile floor of the Cat's cradle, with it's white and polished gold checkered floor glistening in the oriental lamps that hung above the assortment of round tables, while the bar itself was glass, and illuminated by what appeared to be raw, yellow materia, giving the alcoholic glasses an almost lavish glow to each and every bottle. Haru would beam at himself for having done such a wonderful job of cleaning the place, and, hopping over the counter, he walked his way over to the heavy, intricate wooden doors of his restaurant, and opened them wide, the still early morning streets lightly dotted with pedestrians making their way to work.
Walking back to the bar, the feline would swiftly check on the pots of black coffee he had pre made for the morning crowds, as he was sure those coming back from the night shift would eagerly appreciate a warm, energizing cup of joe to help them on the journey back home. Of course, Haru hardly ever served it black, always adding a mixture of creams, syrups, and other lovely delicacies to his coffee to really make them pop, and stand out from all the blase cafes that were housed within these artsy streets.
Hearing the bell on the front doors ding, he would quickly turn, hopping onto his little foot stool at the front of the bar, and smile warmly to his first patrons of the morning, "Good morning! I hope the day has been treating you well, can I interest you in a cup of coffee to start your day?"

Tseng was glad to have gotten back to Gaia in one piece. The mission to get back here was successful and it was a massive relief. He was glad to be back on his home turf once more. Here he could get all the information he needed. All those other worlds he had to go in completely blind and he did not enjoy that feeling in the slightest. He had been lucky to run into Strife, Lockhart, and Marlene. They had truly filled him in on the on goings of things and filled in a lot of holes that he didn't realize needed to be filled.
The Director now had knowledge that he felt he should fill Veld in with. He would report back to ShinRa after seeing the former Director in person. After all, Veld was looking for his daughter. Tseng couldn't hinder that for him. He had promised to share any information that he had gathered and the information he had gathered was a lot to soak in. It was not something that could be explained over the phone. Anyone other than Veld would probably think Tseng had finally snapped if they heard all this. It was quite crazy to believe. A young boy was fighting yellow eyes shadows that wanted to consume hearts with a metal overgrown key? He had shape shifted and was breathing underwater as a mermaid. Then he and Elena had turned into creatures that one would dress for Halloween as. Meaning, Tseng had actually been a vampire for all of an hour. That Fuhito was back from the dead and he'd lost him because pirates were bombing the shoreline of a magical place where children never grow? Yeah, Tseng must have finally lost it.
The current Director had called Veld to meet him where Sector 8, in the plate district, of Edge. It was amusing how he still thought of Edge as if it was still the old Midgar. Tseng knew the new names of the streets and areas. However, sometimes it made him feel more reminiscent of when ShinRa actually held more power than it did now. He had chosen this section due to the fact that it had a lot of up and coming new businesses. Some that he figured could do with some surveillance. Just to be sure there was nothing nefarious behind the scenes. It would work out well. He would have an excuse to have been here if and when Rufus found out he didn't reports straight back to HQ.
Tseng chose Cat's Cradle as the meeting place only because it was in the newer section. He could scout the place while getting a look at almost every business up the street. The Director had come in plain clothing to avoid being spotted quite as easily in the crowd. It worked better in the past to stand out. But, with the newer world order, he tried to blend in when having a more secure meeting.
As Tseng stepped through the door, an off voice spoke up from behind the counter. It was quite young from what he could tell. But it wasn't till the small cat cleared the counter that he felt a bit of confusion hit his face. The cat had a striking resemblance to Cait Sith. However, the faux fur coloring was different as was the attire. Had Reeve created another prototype? He wasn't even aware that the head of the WRO still had time to tinker with his AI technology with how hard he was working to handle policing the area. The WRO had practically taken over as the police and immediate response teams. It helped a lot as ShinRa lost a lot of employees and Soldier. They wouldn't be able to handle as much as the WRO could. It gave them the ability to concentrate their focus on their current goals rather than arresting petty criminals.
The Director stood paused in the doorway for a moment before he spoke up. "Sure, a coffee would be fine...." He replied as he watched the cat to try and get a feel on it's movements. It was very lifelike, quite similar to Cait Sith. It had to be one of Reeve's. But, he'd watch and see. He knew Reeve enjoyed playing games once in a while. So he probably wouldn't be very forthcoming.

Veld hadn't been sleeping.
Well, not well anyways. Normally, it was just the past that haunted him. Kalm, mainly. However, the disappearance of his daughter was weighing on his mind. The escalating rumors of shadowy creatures were just the tip of the iceberg. He was almost relieved when he got a report from Tseng since he knew he was getting information from a trusted source. Of course, then came the the location for their clandestine meeting. Veld hadn't heard of the Cat's Cradle before. But he hadn't been in Edge in forever, so this must have been a new place. So Veld soon found himself walking into a restaurant, hoping that he didn't look too disheveled and tired. However, he was sure he was failing that bit. As he walked in, he noticed a cat on its hind legs, walking around and taking orders. Veld rubbed his eyes. Ok, no, his eyes weren't tricking him. Was this Reeve's doing? Why would Reeve use one of his Cait Siths to run a restaurant?
Veld sat down across from Tseng and smiled at his old subordinate. He then turned around to the cat. "Hey, Reeve, I could use a coffee, please. Black." He only vaguely realized he said 'Reeve' to the mysterious cat being. God, he needed sleep. He turned back to Tseng. He smiled at his friend and looked around. "Hello again, Tseng. I honestly wasn't expecting to hear you back so soon." Veld sighed, cracking his neck as he waited for his coffee. "So... I didn't get much from your note, but you mentioned you managed to get off-world?" There were a lot of rumors floating around lately, including people who wielded giant keys. It was hard to believe but so much had happened to this world. Veld was willing to keep an open mind.

As the feline would spot the rather handsome figure, standing there and giving him the quizzical look that most newcomers would, it was something Haru had grown used to as he just continued to smile, waiting for the mysterious patron to take his order and make his way inside. His ears would twitch slightly when the gentleman started talking, and with a nod, Haru would beam and cheerily reply, "Coming right up! Oh, and we do offer a complimentary breakfast this early in the morning if you like?"
Not waiting on an answer to the inquiry of breakfast, the black cat would hop off his stool and get to work, grabbing a pot of coffee from four pots that sat next to an assortment of equipment, all accompanied by the same, golden yellow glow of the materia housed underneath the thick glass that they rested upon. Still, it was an all too familiar sight for the cat, his movements showing an air of expertise and grace as he poured the dark liquid into a fine, china coffee cup, with gold trimming around the rim of the cup that had been painted on before the cup was waxed and polished, ensuring that no metallic aftertaste would taint the coffee.
Lifting the saucer, the feline would gently set it on the bar in front of a nearby stool, allowing his customer to take it with them to whatever seat they chose. The rich smell of medium-dark, Arabica bean coffee filled the air as the contents of the cup let off a wispy steam. It was quite clear that the feline had gone all out in trying to make the best coffee he could for his customers, and as it would soon show, he showed a level of detail that no auto-piloted robot could easily achieve.
As, when the next customer came in and ordered his coffee, Haru would first get a good look at him, just like his first customer, and swiftly realized that this particular man needed an energy boost. Haru swiftly made his way back over to his pots, this time grabbing the fourth pot of coffee, and treating this next cup with just as much care and expertise as the last, however, the bean that was chosen for this brew was different, as he had given this new customer a cup of Robusta bean, medium-roast coffee. While the Arabica bean was considered to have more flavor than the Robusta, Robusta beans were proven to provide more caffeine than the prior bean, which meant that his newest customer would benefit far more greatly from Robusta coffee. Setting it down next to the other cup, his ear would twitch as the second customer would address him under an unfamiliar name.
"I'm sorry? I don't know who Reeve is, but I imagine they make people like myself. My name is Haru, by the way, and while I have to say that I haven't seen you guys around, it only makes sense since we only recently re-opened our doors. Either way, would either of you like to try our complimentary breakfast?" Haru calmly explained, wondering if the two handsome fellows would bother introducing themselves to their barista. The feline's blue and yellow eyes were highly expressive, the almond shaped slits of his eyes thinning or growing wider with each change in lighting, white whisker's twitching occasionally when they would brush against the fabric of his red and gold hoodie, his feline teeth looking organic, or at least made out of some kind of bone, while his tongue was also just as organic, it seemed more like he was a bio-organic creature rather than an automaton, and the way Haru referred to himself as a person, rather than a doll could be seen by some as unsettling.

The current Director watched the cat as it took his order and moved to start fixing it up for the man. Normally he would not have given it a second look seeing as he's seen technology similar to it. However, the resemblance to Cait Sith was almost uncanny. Though, the attire was a bit different from the red cape that Cait wore. Tseng wasn't quite sure if this could be one of Reeve's creations. But, he had admitted to them before that he had a few different version. So, maybe this was one of those other versions? It seemed logical to the Director. Yet, he wasn't fond of making assumptions. That was a comodity that he couldn't afford. Even when the risk was so low.
It offered him a complimentary breakfast with his coffee before it shifted down off it's perch on the stool to go and situate the coffee for him. Ironically, Tseng did enjoy the black liquid more than he cared to admit. It's practically all he drank to keep him going at all hours. Though, he would occasionally supplement his caffeine intake with some tea or water on occasion. But, nine times our of ten he had a cup of coffee in his hand when he wasn't on a mission. "Just coffee for now, thank you." He replied.
The coffee didn't take all that long to be poured as the cat appeared and placed the drink on the counter in front of Tseng. The Wutainese man bowed his head slightly in thanks as he accepted the cup. The robot took detail in it's work. It was almost as if it wasn't on auto-pilot. But, this was something Reeve would do to mess with him. Tseng did not put that past him. But, he didn't play into it. Not just yet.
Shortly after Tseng sat down with the small cup of coffee, Veld appeared. Not everyone could tell how tired the former director was, but Tseng could. They had worked together for years. It would be strange if Tseng hadn't picked up on the subtle notions. Veld ordered himself a coffee, calling the cat Reeve. Did Veld know something he did not? It wasn't like Tseng wasn't already thinking it though. He'd have to ask when the man finally sat to join him. Honestly, he wished Veld had taken a little longer. He hadn't had a lot of time to really survey the area. But, it didn't matter. It meant he could get back to Rufus faster this way. He already knew the President wouldn't be pleased with the turn of events and the fact he didn't report right back. Tseng just needed to speak with Veld, give him a heads up.
Tseng nodded his head to his mentor as he sat. It was really nice to see him again. "So soon? I feel like it's been months." The man admitted with a shake of his head. Veld went right into business as Tseng took the first drink of his coffee. It was an odd blend, but nothing he wouldn't drink. It had a more distinct taste to it than most coffees he had had. "That is correct. I'm not really sure I completely believe it myself yet. Elena and myself ended up through a portal while piloting a helicopter for a mission... and Veld, there's a lot of worlds. I have a feeling I barely saw a fraction of what is out there. I'm afraid that finding El-..Felicia won't be easy. But, that's not everything. I seems Fuhito is alive again. I don't know how. I simply ran into him on a world called Neverland and failed to capture or kill him." Veld would know that meant Elfe was in danger. Fuhito would be aiming for her if he knew she was alive or off world as well.
That's when the cat appeared with Veld's coffee, letting him decide on whether or not he wanted food. Tseng had already declined the breakfast for the moment. The Director watched the cat intently again as he denied he knew Reeve, but then presumed that Reeve made cats like himself. But, if he knew that... then he had to be Reeve. Not many people knew about the robots. It was ShinRa technology after all. "...Why would you presume that Reeve makes automatons if you truly have never met the man? As I'm sure you are aware, there aren't many like yourself." He inquired as he watched the robot inquisitively. Tseng rarely showed any emotion on his face, but he made sure not to hide his non-belief well at all. It was plain as day.

Veld smiles at the cat... person... thing and nods. "I'm actually a bit famished. I'd like one of your complimentary breakfast." Veld then looked at Tseng, resting his head on his hands and hoping he didn't just sleep like that. Getting old was a pain sometimes. He then listened to Tseng as he explained the state of things. So there were more worlds than just The Planet. Well, there was that rumor proven true at least. It would also make sense that those rumors about the black creatures would be true, too, since they were tied to the idea of different worlds. He sighed when Tseng turned the conversation to Felicia. "I agree, unfortunate as it is. Who knows how many worlds there are? However, that being said, a mission being difficult hasn't stopped any of us before." Then Tseng mentioned Fuhito being alive. His expression grew more serious, lines of tranquil rage etched into his brow. "I... see... It would seem that some roaches refuse to stay dead."
Veld sighed in frustration and took the cup of coffee in his hand. A nice cup of coffee was exactly what he needed right now. He took a careful sip of the hot elixir. The taste hit his tongue and he suddenly felt relaxed and elated. "Wow... this is some good coffee. In fact, it's fantastic. Just what I needed. Veld then took a moment to gather his thoughts. "As much of a threat as Fuhito represents, we do have two advantages. One, the number of worlds. It would be reasonable to assume that Fuhito would have an equally hard time as us in finding Felicia. Two, I would think he knows as much about other worlds as we do. That is, not very much. Besides, we beat him once before and we didn't even have your new 'friends' back then." Veld was, of course, referring to Cloud and his friends, though he didn't necessarily know each of them by name. "Regardless, until we have some means of controlled travel to other worlds, we're at a stand still. Please, tell me about what you saw, Tseng."

"In that vein, you are correct, sir. Since I awoke into consciousness nineteen years ago, I thought I was the only one of my kind. However, your friend confusing me for this "Reeve" individual makes me think that he isn't necessarily like me, but has automatons that look like me. It's the only logical explanation. Regardless, I shall return with your friend's breakfast, just give me one moment." Haru replied curtly, still keeping an air of professionalism to his speech, the red garbed feline dropping to the tiled floor and heading over to a nearby counter. As his paws worked away at the clearly Wutai styled breakfast, which consisted of steamed meat buns in the shape of Siamese cat heads, an egg-filled crepe, and a warm whole-grain doughnut, he couldn't help but eavesdrop on the duo's conversation, his ear gently twitching as he heard them bring up the topic of reliable off-world travel.
"Sorry to butt in, good sirs, but...I remember catching a glimpse of something in the Mithril Mines four years back or so. My grandfather told me that the elastic substance I saw in the mines was...I think he said it was Gum...something. But he said that with enough of it, Shinra would have been easily been able to efficiently complete it's space program...but last I heard, Shinra in it's current state no longer has anything of the sort, and collecting the gummi pieces would require delving into the mine. I'd be happy to help and go collect as much as I could from there, but there have been rumors about black creatures inside it..." Haru stated, seeming to ramble on to try and be as best a use to his customers as he could, only to blink and realize just how long he had gone on for. With what one could only assume was a blush, he swiftly went back to making the second customer, Veld's breakfast.
Upon finally finishing it, he set the tray down in front of him, the food nice and hot, smelling of spices and the natural ingredients that comprised the quite wholesome array of food. After all, that was Haru's job after all, and he prided himself in being a master of his craft, even if his meals did have their own little spin, with the cat motif on some of his dishes, but that was to be expected when one entered a restaurant called "The Cat's Cradle". Stepping away from the two, he would give a respectful bow to them, "My apologies, I didn't mean to derail your conversation. Please, enjoy the rest of your stay, sirs."

At least Veld understood the seriousness of the situation. If Fuhito was alive, then there was no telling who else would be. Sephiroth? Kadaj? Hojo? ShinRa Senior? But also, maybe Aerith? Zack? Tseng hadn't thought of that possibility till now. If people were returning from the lifestream, maybe it wasn't going to just be the villains of their story. There could truly be some good to come of this situation. He had done so much evil in his life, but their lives were the only two things he regretted. If he had only been a bit faster in getting the information. A bit faster in getting there. Able to evade Sephiroth in the Temple of the Ancients. But, he couldn't change the past. He could only work to prevent those same mistakes in the future.
The Director shook his head at Veld's comment about the coffee and listened to his response before the cat-bot appeared. His eyes watching the creature as it spoke about making the assumption it had. The suspicion was poorly veiled across his face as the cat spoke and retreated to make the breakfast. Tseng didn't trust it's words. It was only logical that it was Reeve's creation. Though, nineteen years? He was unsure that Reeve had been working on the technology that far back. Then again, maybe he had created the technology that far back and that's when it felt it was 'born'. But it surely wasn't put into a skin till recently. Right? Reeve had to be behind this. It must have been his way of scouting out the new area. It was smart and he certainly wouldn't want anyone finding out about it. That would explain his denying any knowledge.
Once the cat left, Tseng continued where he left off, answering Veld's questions and requests. "It's hard to believe. I lived through it and I am still denying that it happened. I'm not mad quite yet..." He let out a soft sigh before taking another sip of coffee to start. "The first world was similar to the Northern Cavern. Mountains as far as the eye could see with frigid temperatures. I simply presumed we'd crashed in the Northern Continent at the time. The next world..." Tseng paused for a moment, discomfort pulling across his expression. This was the part that would be the most unbelievable. He had lost his legs in exchange for a fin and gills.
"The second was underwater. This world seemed to change myself as well as another being I encounter who admitted she was not human. I had my feet replaced with a physical fin and was able to breath through gils. I'm not sure how that occurred unless it's a mechanism of the world. Strife explained it to me, but I don't truly understand how it was possible." Magic was not something that he believed in. Their magic was through the use of materia, crystallized lifestream. The concept simply perplexed him. Then again, there was an ailment of their world which turned humans to toads. Maybe it was not all that far fetched.
"The third was Neverland where I encountered a talking shadow, called a heartless. It was made of a world where no one ages. Adults seem to be shunned as the island was inhabited by children that never aged while being attacked by the adults... who all seemed to be pirates." That world he experienced the lease amount of time. He was far too focused on Fuhito to truly explore or investigate that world. He was furious when he allowed the former terrorist to escape his grasp. There was no telling what sort of trouble that man was going to cause. Anything that happened from that moment on would be Tseng's responsibility as he failed to exterminate him when he had the chance.
"I believe, Halloween Town, was Elena's favorite as she seemed to find it quite amusing. It was another world that changed your appearance. It seems I was a Vampire and Elena was similar to Frankenstein. I must take her word on my appearance because I was not able to see my reflection. Though, I could feel the fangs. So I'm sure she was not lying to me. There were talking Skeletons and werewolves, almost straight out of a horror movie. Yet, they acted like normal civilians." He took another drink of his coffee as he watched the cat preparing the meal in the background. It was quite focused on it's purpose as it worked. Tseng working to keep his voice low to avoid interlopers in their conversation. Yet, he was mistaken in believing that the machine wasn't able to hear them.
"The last world we discovered before I spoke with Strife was almost of a children's book. The colors of the scenery were vivid, far brighter than the Golden Saucer if you could believe it. I don't believe I've ever seen a tree as green. We encountered being that appeared... stuffed? I thought they were automated until Elena explained her thoughts and reasoning. But, I can't confirm it either way. If we're able to interfere in their worlds. My thought goes to what sort of beings are going to make themselves known here. As for transportation? I am almost disappointed knowing they ended the Space Program years before. It looks like that's one program we should have invested in." He let out a slight sigh, his fingers moving to rub the bridge of his nose before letting his eyes shift to meet Veld's again. The current Director was sure if the roles were reversed that he wouldn't believe Veld. He'd of presumed that the man was getting old and losing his mind. But, experiencing it? Tseng would probably believe almost anything.
That's when the cat interrupted.
The Director's eyes transitioned from Veld to Haru. He listened intently as it inserted itself into their conversation. It was annoying, but if it was Reeve, this was his way of helping without revealing himself. Why the man wouldn't simply admit it to them, Tseng didn't know. "I was in the Mythril Mines around that time myself. I didn't see what you're describing..." He didn't correct the cat on it's calling the heartless shadows. It wasn't something that he needed to know.

Veld let Tseng give his report as the cat set his breakfast down. A traditional Wutainese dish, eh? Veld had gone to Wutai a few times, both before and after the War that had ravaged it. So, he was vaguely familiar with the food, unlike most other people who worked at the old Shinra company. As he ate, he paid rapt attention to Tseng's report. These worlds were so vastly different it would seem from the Planet. Some could even change ones appearance to allow them to adapt. Veld did his best to hide his amusement at Tseng becoming a merman. Luckily for his former subordinate, Veld wasn't one to blackmail his friends, especially ones who had saved his life. Veld judged his face as Tseng spoke, noticing that he was having a hard time believing what he was saying. Judging from the content, Veld could hardly blame him. Mermaids, Skeletons, Children who never grew up, Talking Stuffed Animals? It was a lot to take in. Still, it was clearly not impossible, per say. If there were as many worlds as Veld theorized, there had to be a few that were... well, strange. He even wondered they, too, had their own Lifestream, before he dismissed that thought. If there magic was this different, who's to say they even had a Lifestream.
Veld clasped his hands together once Tseng finished, idly realizing that he was already halfway through his meal. He must've been hungrier than he thought. "Magic that adapts you to the world you're on must be quite powerful. It would make sense if Magic worked differently on other worlds. It'd be helpful if we had a means of finding someone from another world to ask." Veld had no reason to not believe Tseng. He was not really given to imagination or flights of fancy, unlike some other Turks. "At least we have a name attached to what is supposedly infesting our world. 'Heartless', eh?" Veld took another sip of coffee as his mind raced to make sense of all of this. This information was intriguing and more than a bit frightening. Who knew what could be out there? That was when the cat came in and admitted he had been listening. It seemed he heard of something that were called Gummi Pieces in the Mythril Mines. If they were taken, they could be used for interplanetary travel. "If only that budding astronaut were around..." Veld said, with a smirk. "Well, they might have been there before, but that's not to say they aren't there now. A lot of things seem to be changing about our world these days."
