Every day since.
Lea had just been lucky enough to get Yen Sid's blessing...well more like disinterested dismissal allowing the keyblade weilder in training to take a 'spring break' of sorts and boy did Lea ever! At first Lea spent a great deal of time where he was at this very moment, here in Twilight Town. The craving for a sea salt ice cream had been gnawing at him so he had to scratch the itch. He was still bewildered that he even had a taste for the things. Typically Lea wasn't into sweets, but there was just something so right about the way he felt when eating the particular frozen treat that he bought them.
Bored out of his mind, Lea went to some other worlds. He went to Radiant Garden but it was nothing like he remembered it...at least not the way he'd rather remember it, and he found himself pretty quickly disappointed. He was no stranger to the idea that things change, but finding a semblance of belonging was proving to be difficult.
His travels led him to an odd place he'd never been before but you could hear the noise through the corridor there was so much cheer and commotion. How the heartless seemed to cower and shy away from the place was interesting in itself. Lea had to check it out. The next thing he knew he was watching a crazy wicked magic show. When the music and the dancing started up, Lea got swept up in it and he'd have been absolutely content with it. Even more so with the chance to show off on the stage in the Talent Show which he didn't win for some reason. Total crap. Even in all the fun and exhilaration, something totally unexpected and even a little scary happened. Roxas was there! They'd said their final goodbyes. Lea never expected to see him again. They'd both gotten into the dance off and when they spotted eachother again it was like they'd never been apart. It was like every awful thin Lea had ever said...well Axel said or did never happened. Roxas had closed the distance and threw his arms around Lea screaming his former name and all he could do was stand there like an idiot.
They were separated in the crowds, but seeing Roxas had seriously shaken Lea. The blonde boy had been so happy that Lea had kept his promise...but that was just it. It hadn't been his promise. It was Axel's. Roxas didn't even know the real him anymore. Lea never got a chance to correct Roxas...
Every day since...Lea has come to this spot, two sea salt ice creams ready to be eaten. He had to throw one away each day...and he was starting to wonder if maybe he'd just wanted that boy to be Roxas so badly that that's who he saw. As a grim look was beginning to cross the red head's face footsteps sounded on the clock tower balcony. Lea quickly wiped the moisture in his eye away with the back of his forearm trying to make it look more smooth like maybe it was just a bit of sweat on his forehead. "I was startin to think I'd imagined it." he confessed, unable to hide the very slight bit of hurt in his voice.

Every day since.
Roxas had learned that impossible had become real, that life’d decided to give instead of just taking, he’d avoided this spot. It made no sense, was kinna perverse even. Yet without fail, he’d sit in the sun-dappled shadows of some cafe or shaded rooftop, looking up where he was supposed to be. Sometimes he was early, late once or twice, but he was in town every twenty four spin of a clock that kept time in a nightless world.
So was Axel, up where he didn’t have to be.
Some evenings, when the halcyon haze rimming the clouds brought on recollections of laughter and everything felt like a spent hourglass, Roxas steeled himself to take the leap, turning the glass over again. He meant to everyday, swore it’d be the next moment.
Everyday, after milling nimbus had drifted over hours to join with the brume of the sea, Axel left alone. Then Roxas would take a seat on the bricks right beside where his friend’s kept vigil for him, and watch his adopted homeland lazily bestir itself through the placid pother of endless days, only brave enough to speak his ardent questions to empty air.
It was wrong, cruel certainly. This halfway thing, keeping the dream of what was alive at the cost of the miraculous now, couldn’t go on, or shouldn’t anyway. Gotta believe the resolution was there, but the torturous bittersweetness of fond distance has a certain allure for those with a poverty of pleasant memories. Roxas couldn’t say it was better, leaving Axel up on that two hundred foot pedestal, but… it sure beat breaking.
Eventually however, even a guy that murdered his friends realizes he’s put them through enough. He’d taken the steps of the maintained stairs at a cautious pace, frivolous for a someone who could rip open space, but Roxas had counted them nevertheless. It was an old habit. Days, stairs, stars, they never seemed real till he put some sort of number to them. One by one, he counted those winding steps all the way up there.
But looking at Axel now, benefit of the safety of distance, Roxas for the life of him couldn’t remember how many there’d been…
“Im real,” he affirmed softly, dark fabric of the his cloak scrapping on the bricks as he lowered himself onto the ledge. “Thought you were gone,” the hood’s folds obscured Roxas’ pained smile, but not the unsteady crinkling of eyes behind unruly blond spikes. “Shoulda’ remembered you’re tough.”

'I'm Real.' Promised Roxas which lifted the corner of Lea's mouth just a slight bit. That was good. Sometimes Lea wasn't sure he was real himself. After surviving...or not surviving the world he'd spent half his life a part of, what was real and what was not had a way of making him question everything. It was something he and Roxas shared in common.
As he was joined on the ledge, Lea passed the second ice cream treat over without even a glance over at the blonde boy. Such a seemingly pointless movement, so simple something like passing off an ice cream bar, but the way it happened, the way it felt in his arm like some habit. It was a little bewildering to say the least.
Roxas admitted that he thought Lea was gone. Correction. He thought Axel was gone and Lea turned his gaze toward the boy feeling almost like he was betraying him for this. He wasn't the same guy Roxas knew and trusted. He wasn't the same guy that he'd shared ice cream with on this tower after a mission. Then there was the thought that Roxas wasn't supposed to be here either. How was it possible that he was...and how was he still Roxas?
"I am gone." Lea admitted like it was dark secret he'd been keeping for years. "I'm not the same guy you knew." his ice cream free hand was lifted to shift into a scratch somewhere within the spikes of his hair at the back of his head. "In fact, technically you and I haven't ever met." he continued with a shrug. "The name's 'Lea.' he said with half hearted disinterest. Didn't even bother with important reminder to commit it to memory. If this really was Roxas then Lea couldn't help but feel guilt. He had a heart and Roxas did not.

The motion to take the Ice cream was so automatic it superseded conscious thought. It was so easy to think the mind was master of the body, that it was just a machine we’re in the driver's seat of. But it didn’t work that way. No, sometimes the muscles and nerves acquire their own agendas. Like the patterns of the autumn leaves pressed into unfurled concrete, our past actions solidify over time time into something unintended but nevertheless immutable. Three-hundred and fifty eight days left quite a rut in the nervous system. Roxas was pulling down his hood with his left hand and reaching for the ice-cream with the right, a reflexive reenactment of a year’s fossil record blissful evenings, before his brain could cognate what Axel was saying.
Wait…what?
The reaching hand froze mid-motion of taking the dessert, racing thoughts seizing control with a graceless tremor.
Ice cream splattered on the warm bricks, dribbling along the pale veins the mortar.
“We never…” Roxas mouthed in whispered renunciation, incomprehension swathing his soft features like obscuring fog. Lea’s marrowy clarification was met with a blank stare, but blue eyes didn’t stay barren for long. The dissolution of three hundred and fifty eight shared days into zero could be seen in degrees on the boy’s expressive face like sand spilling from an hourglass. Incredulity drifted into a pensive puzzlement, drawing sandy eyes brows together and pale lips into a small frown. Enough pieces clicked from there to evoke anxious uncertainty, signaled by an unsteady twitch of the fingers and a few rapid moist blinks. When the grim inevitable hit, its was like glass shattering in the windows of Roxas’ eyes. His questioning scrutiny of the man who’d been Axel a minute ago became a thousand yard stare. Loss, pure and unadulterated, made that look long and desolate as a friend died all over again.
“I don’t…”
Yet, there remained one more step on the familiar ladder of Roxas’ emotional cycle, so often turned to when life refused to make sense. Blue fire flashed in a glance before Roxas turned away to ostensibly look down on Twilight Town, seeing nothing. A seething tension gripped his body from shoulders to clenching and unclenching fingers. When words came through gritted teeth, they burned like dry ice.
“Why're you here Lea?”

Lea's eyes followed the falling ice cream treat like Roxas had just butterfingered a very expensive keepsake and let it crash to the ground in pieces. He couldn't bring himself to gaze reproachfully up at Roxas for it though. He was shocked. He was hurt. Lea got it. Just by being here...didn't that mean Axel never would be? Or wait...hadn't Sora said something about the nobodies living on through the hearts of others? Guilt paraded Lea's features, a continued scratch running through the back most spikes of his bright red hair which was definitely growing out pretty long.
The older of the two boys sighed when Roxas posed a question that was really tough to answer. What was he doing there? "Look..." Lea tried a bit uncertainly. Roxas seemed pretty peeved. For some reason, Lea wasn't sure he blamed him. "I might not be the same guy...but," he shrugged widely... "There were just some memories I was meant to keep safe." he looked out over the town with a raised brow. "Like this place." he gestured toward Twilight Town vaguely and patted the spot near him on the clock tower before noting the ice cream in his hand. "And the taste of this weird ice cream." he paused looking back over at Roxas. "And a friendship somehow possible between two people without hearts."
That last bit he'd slowly as though that had only just occurred to him now, like it were a puzzle piece he'd been missing. What if Axel wasn't actually gone or replaced? What if Lea was simply more than he was before? As long as Axel's memories lived on in him...wasn't Axel still a part of him then?

Looking over the quiet town going through its placid rhythms by the ever-golden sea, Roxas took a minute or two to mentally stumble over the what was actually bothering him here. Sure, Axel not being Axel really got to him. He hated that they were at square one again after everything. Ok maybe they weren’t but since it wasn’t the same…gah this hurt to even think about! Sandy eyebrows creased as Roxas sullenly left his former-present-memory piggy bank-friend in suspense, as he pretended the routine wonders of the most gorgeous sunset in the worlds held more interest this is hecka stressful conversation. Roxas was a focused thinker if not an alacritous one. Eventually the truth fell into his mental palm like a gem picked to death from stone. It was a simpler rougher thing then he’d expected, kinna childish even. But deep down, below all the weird questions the situation evoked, it was just came down to this.
“Guess I didn’t want this,” Roxas made vague motion at the wrist to encompass the two of them and the sunset, “to change y'know?”
A very tired blue gaze finally met one of almost feline emeralds. “Us bein’ Nobodies was part of that,” the young man’s soft tenor annunciated slowly. “You understood what its like, what we needed to do.” Again so simple, childish, but why deny whats true? Axel’d once had all the answers, done all the thinking Roxas never bothered to do. It wasn’t just that Axel might not be able to be that again, Roxas sure he himself could either. Some dumb irresponsible part of him just wanted to go back to when there weren’t any questions, no uncertainties beyond who’d he be paired up with the next way. Axel’d represented that placid certainty. Lea seemed the final nail in the coffin that Roxas could never go back to that peaceful ignorance.
“How could you now that your’re…” Roxas struggled with the a feeling so gut-deep it was barely coherent, stuff tied up with Sora always was. “So much more then me.”

There was a long bout of silence between them...like a REALLY long one where they both just kinda stared out at the sunset like it was most new and most interesting thing either of them had ever seen. Why was was this so hard? They'd never had this hard of a time talking to eachother. Well...actually that wasn't true. In fact, even when they were both in the organization, it always seemed like Lea...like Axel had something different to do, somewhere different to go...something really hard to do. But then, Roxas could wield the keyblade back then. Lea...er Axel had always wondered why he couldn't. He'd always wanted to. Even now when it happened, it was difficult. Something held him back and his use of the blade felt shaky. Lea was just uncertain.
Finally, Roxas broke the silence and Lea was actually a bit disappointed. He was happy to be up here. Happy to be near what was was good about his more recent memories. Axel's memories. But Roxas was unhappy it seemed. He didn't want this to change. It was too late for that. The Organization was gone. What the boss was trying to do was irrelevant now. Everything changed with or without Axel, or Lea or whoever he happened to be...so, why was it that Roxas was making him feel like this was somehow all his fault?
"But things changed all the time." Lea protested, his expression still a bit hurt. "Sometimes I wasn't even around, they had me off at..." he frowned as the name of the place seemed to escape behind some corner of his mind the moment he thought of it. "...off somewhere else and you were on your own up here." he said. "Sometimes you were mad at me because they would send me on missions or after..." his brows knitted together again. There was someone that he was often sent to bring back. Who was that? And why had Roxas cared so much? "Uh." He scratched the back of his head in confusion. What was going on here? Why was he remembering pieces of things now that he hadn't? "Eh." he dismissed the thoughts he couldn't reclaim in irritation. "I'm not 'more than' you because I have something you don't. You have plenty of things that I don't." he said as though the thought made him tired.
"Look, things change no matter who we are at that point in time. You can't ever go back and relive the same memories again. You can only make new ones."

“Xion,” murmured Roxas softly, but didn’t press the point, listening to Axel work through his thoughts. He sighed inwardly as Axel equated the whole Nobody vs Somebody thing like a buncha marbles, with Roxas being fine because he had some different colored ones. Although, pointed out the annoying rational part of his brain, it wasn’t like Roxas himself was an expert on all this. Sure, the having things vs not having things didn’t quite mesh with what his gut-feeling. Yet, who was the one who’d been both a Nobody and Somebody? Roxas and Sora talked past each other sometimes because they were opposite facing sides of the coin. But, If there was a dude here who knew both sides, wouldn’t it be Lea not Roxas?
…and wasn’t Roxas “literally couldn't make sentences two years ago “ himself pretty much the poster-boy for change?
The moment when you realize you’re both wrong and being an total ass about it too, Roxas knew it oh so well. Yeah he was still afraid of losing what’d he had with Axel. But, despite not being the biggest fan of this Lea development, like at all, wasn’t it kinna ungrateful as hell having friend come back to life and be all whiny that he might be a bit different?
Sheesh ok, now his ears were burning…
“Sooo,” Roxas ventured a broad pained grin worthy of his Other, “any new memories in particular you wanna make?” Conscious that he couldn’t really wiggle out of this one, Roxas left out a long breath and tented his fingers together a few times. “Look Lea,” nope that name wasn’t getting any easier, “thank you for…,” the boy struggled with what exactly the end trajectory here was. “Being patient with me here. I am happy to see you,” he insisted despite appearances to the contrary,” …it’s just alot.”

”Xion.”
Lea’s bright brow furrowed as the familiar name hit his ears. ”Yeah" he murmured similarly in agreement…not that he could even begin to explain why that name held any significance for him at all. It just sounded right. ‘After Xion.’ That was exactly right…but why? Who was Xion? God, his head felt like it was going to burst right off of his shoulders the more he dwelled on it.
Roxas pulled him from his thoughts with a grin and a ‘sooo.’ The grin was weak but Lea would take it and he gratefully returned one of his own. He was in a pretty good place and could encourage his friend so that was exactly what he was gonna do. Roxas asked what kinda memories exactly Lea wanted to make and he made a ”Hmm.” noise thinking on it, a fingerless gloved hand placed beneath his own chin. Roxas, however continued thanking Lea for his patience and insisting that he was happy to see him that it was just a lot to take in. Lea raised a brow at him then chuckled. ”Yea its fine, but you are making it kinda weird.” He nudged Roxas in the side with his elbow…exactly the way that he used to.
”Look Roxas.” a grin lifted the corner of his lip. He was picking on Roxas. ”Some things change, but that doesn’t mean everything has to. I mean that dance competition back in that weird wobbly town. That was kinda cool, don’t ya think? There are whole worlds out there for us to see. All kinds of things to do. We don’t work for ‘the boss’ anymore. We’re free to go as we please. Do whatever we want. I think it’s kind of, exciting. Don’t you?” he gazed down at the sleepy brown roofs of twilight town. It was odd not feeling restless the way he used to. ”And you know…I suppose if it’s easier for you…for now, you can still call me ‘Axel’ if you want to.”

“I’m making it weird,” Roxas protested with far better humor. Yeah ok, maybe he’d hadn’t taking this all gracefully, but c’mon! He wasn’t the one doing the ‘Somebody formerly known as: _______’ routine!
“Yeah it was,” he conceded to Axel’s verdict on Dance Competition coolness. He’d never really done anything like that before, but then against, that went for alot of things. Which only made the next thought from Lea hit harder. Ironic wasn’t it? Roxas’d been the one to run his mouth and walk out on everything and everyone for the sake of freedom, revenge, to find answers. He’d just found a form of captivity all the more complete waiting for him. Now he was truly free, but had to admit it was …
“It is exciting,” he affirmed, “also kinna…overwhelming,” came the admission shortly after. “Like not in a bad way,” the prevarication came with a small smile and and shrugging inhale. “It’s just …you get something you never thought was possible, like seeing you at the competition,” blue eyes flicked up to feline green briefly. “You’re happy an’ all,” sneakers scrapped on brick as Roxas’ slightly kicking feet appeared to the be weightless over the sleepy town below. “But its so big you don’t even know how to start.” Realizing he might not be making sense Roxas huh’ed softly and looked to Lea sheepishly at an angle, hands folded behind his head.
“So yeah, I’m excited, just trying to figure out the exact ‘whatever’ I wanna do.”
Lea’s next offer caught Roxas off-guard, eliciting a small puzzled sound as the sandy brows furrowed in thought. As was his way, Roxas took a little bit to sort it out in head, though unlike his previously silences, this lapse into contemplation was less closed off, expressive semblance visibly working through the various tensions. “That’d be easier,” he admitted eventually, “but no.”
He took a deep breath before qualifying the contradiction. “Look, I know what its like to treated like you’a cheap-knock-off of someone else.” Roxas shook his head, indicating he didn’t wish that same aggravation on his buddy. “If you’re Lea,” he emphasized softly, “then that’s who I need to get to know.”

Roxas tried to describe just how happy he'd been to see Lea which elicited a patient chuckle from the older boy. The description was just kinda goofy. "Yeah I get ya." he assured the blonde folding his arms over his chest. Roxas also pointed out that he knew what it was like to be looked at like a cheap knock off of someone else and Lea frowned. Lea...well Axel was probably about the only person who really never looked at Roxas that way. That didn't mean that he didn't know it bothered Roxas, always being confused for Sora, or deliberately called the wrong name in a lot of cases. The Organization was never really good to Roxas. Nevertheless, Lea appreciated that he was able to change Roxas' mind about what to call his new old friend.
"Alright then." Lea agreed realizing that maybe Roxas wasn't off about how overwhelming deciding what to do could be. There were all kinds of worlds out there just begging to be seen. "So now what?" he asked with a chuckle. He sighed and lifted himself to his feet, his expression clearly one in thought. "I heard there was a new fighting ring in that Olympus place." he brought up uncertainly. "OH! There was one world that I saw it was just a fair but it's like super close to some space whale apparently?" needless to say there were a lot of times when Lea was only half paying attention to his lessons on the worlds.

“Disney Town!” Roxas bolted to his feet in one sudden motion, immediately comprehending the bizarre orbital cetacean directions like Lea had asked about turning right on Market Street. “That place is awesome, they have like this battle with fruit and stuff. All the building are all weird and twisted because dog-and-cow-men live in them, but it’s on top of this giant electro-pinball-maze,” Roxas’ morose contemplation had fled in the wake of the enthusiastic rant, as had apparently his need to breathe between words. “Ok but like, there's tennis but you battle with mutant fruit!” Roxas’ tone made it clear that this no doubt an strict improvement to the sport. “They let you drive car too. It’sa race I guess, but I most just run into people,” the boy admitted with a broad shameless grin, an ‘grrrrsh’ onamonapoeia of auto impact, but still no exhalation. “Oh yeah there’s ice cream to! Like a thousand different kinds, but only from these ducks’ music gun!” The eldritch ways of the Disney Town’s frozen goods economy thus explained, cerulean eyes reflected crepuscular light as the widened impossibly further. “And there’s these two chipmunks right? They make people fight to the freakin’ death for their birthday!” You could take the boy out of the Organization, but not the Organization out of the boy. “Normally you need like parents or whatever to get in,” Roxas admitted, momentarily mistaking another's inherited lifetime for his own, “but now I don’t need anybody to go! …But going with you’d be cool!”
Finally Roxas paused for some deep breaths. His still exuberant countenance was awash with another’s child-like light, a mirror of another little blonde warrior who’d passed his radiance beyond the veil of death-like sleep. Both Key of Destiny and the Wayward Wind briefly looked up Lea as one echoed soul with a sunbeam smile before an exhalation brought Roxas back into the present.
“Yeah,” Roxas admitted, still huffing a tad, “I know that place.”

Roxas was off like a rocket about Disney Town leaving Lea to blink after him. He wasn't sure he'd ever seen the boy so animated. Maybe something changed about Roxas afterall! Well okay, he'd seen him in a tizzy before but it was more of an angry one when he found out that...uhm...when he found out that Axel had been sent after...uh...man what was missing there? It didn't matter, when Roxas was finished and finally took a breath, Lea's face contorted from the effort that was wasted on trying to hold in a burst of laughter. "Roxas, ya goof! I wasn't talkin about Disney Town...I mean that's where we found eachother again, so obviously I've been there, got the place memorized." he shook his head in his amusement. "I was talkin about a different world, I haven't been there yet, but now that you put it all that way...I think another trip to Disney Town sounds perfect! I'm down to fight to the death for some chipmunks or whatever."
Lea beamed at his friend for a moment. This was...this felt awesome, like in a way that was hard to describe. It was kinda sad too. Weird. He huffed out a sigh and got to his feet tossing his non winning ice cream stick...LOSER STICK aside. He turned his attention toward Roxas and folded his arms. "Well. Let's go." he invited gesturing toward the 'back way' they had to take to even get on the tower.

“Oh,” Roxas pipped up as both breath and realization came back to him. Wait yeah that was right. He and Lea had both met in Disney town…and that wasn’t even by a whale was it? What’d the spaz-out been about? Roxas glanced down at the spilt ice-cream. It wasn’t like he had enough for a sugar rush or whatever. It’d hadn’t felt bad exactly (Roxas had the sort of life where ‘spazzing out to your doom’ had much wider variety of anecdotes then one might expect) the opposite really. It was like a release, the kind Roxas only tended to get from Struggling till he dropped or surviving a drop-down-drag-out fight. Heck, it even seemed to cheer up Lea, which hey was a definite plus.
Yet, something nagged the former thirteen’s mind. A dream, the one with the empty marble throne in that austere lonely room. Was it something Sora’d said? Like everything ‘Chosen One’ related, that line of questioning brought with it a twinge of dread, that the unbridled enjoyment was just another thing borrowed, another faded hand-me-down. Seeing how’d it brought up the mood, both his own and Lea’s, Roxas decided to not question it too much, lest it pop like a soap bubble. The nagging memory of the pale alcove lingered, but the Key of Destiny purposefully lost himself in Lea enthusiastic change of travel plans.
As was his way Lea decided they were going like, right now. “Sure just a sec!” Roxas waved off his buddy, feigning the need to get something.
“Seven hundred and thirty days,” said Roxas to the sunset conspiratorially, dallying long enough for his own purposes to reveal themselves to him on their own accord. “That’s how long I’ve been me I think.” It bothered him that there were gaps he couldn’t fill, time he couldn’t account for, but putting a concrete number to things had always comforted Roxas. It made his recollections, and himself along with them, feel more real. He glanced down towards where he and Lea had been sitting, the small outcropping seemingly infused with a whole year’s ritual of endearment, even though those last ones were more bitter then sweet.
“I just want this…” Roxas confessed to the long shadows across the amber sky-line, an ephemeral interplay of Light and Dark across the bricks and shingled rooftops below. The fleeting figment of Sora’s Heart looked down at his own hands, and pressed a thumb with light pressure to his wrist. “Doesn’t matter how long it lasts,” he amended soberly with a bow of the head. If the setting sun or what whatever power set it in sky heard the boy’s simple desperate prayer, it gave the Light-bringer no indication. Yet the responding rhythm against his finger was reassurance nonetheless, the pulse of life going on. Even if some lives were shorter then others, seemed to whisper the sea wind as it gently ruffled the Nobody’s hair ,their setting could still be beautiful.
Roxas turned to jog after Lea, scrapping tennis shoes heedless of the danger of deadly plummet he stepped inches from.
