In general, most people see Alexius as a pretty good person. Sure, his chattiness has earned much ire among the more serious groups of students he attended classes with. But he was different. Where most of the more highly competent students were all stoic or arrogant, Alexius was more carefree, acting more like a regular civilian than a literal child soldier. That actually earned him a bit of respect from people of all stripes, as he was willing to actually put himself out there. Of course, that very carefree and talkative nature has also earned the ire of many people. Of those people, there have been a good handful that Alexius has actually fought.
But this isn't out of a need to prove himself. In fact, it was the exact opposite. There are certain types of people that Alexius just simply cannot stand. Those are the people who believe that they are completely and utterly better than everyone else. He cannot stand by and listen to someone bluster about their own greatness. It's not the act that angers him. It's those people's usual disregard for others that comes up when bragging that angers him. When encountering a person like that, Alexius actually shifts in his own personality, becoming more serious, and also more angry. It is in these situations that his stubborn nature shines through the most brightly, as he will keep throwing himself at an opponent until either he, his opponent, or the both of them cannot stand anymore.
Luckily for Alexius however, his time at Balamb Garden has at least given him some kinds of discipline. While he is still a rather chatty person, his time as a soldier-in-training has enabled him to be more calm and patient than he was before he started taking classes. Of course, because of his new, more composed attitude, most people enjoy being around Alexius. At least..when he isn't going off in pursuit of some rumor for 'the sake of adventure'.
To claim that Alexius comes from a military family would be a rather large inaccuracy. In truth, it only became a military family after he joined Balamb Garden. However, even when he was a young boy, combat intrigued Alexius and his older sister Diana. Often, Diana and Alexius could be found near their house, fighting each other with sticks. Diana always went for the heaviest sticks so Alexius always had to grab two, one to swing at her and attack with, and the other to deflect her sticks with so that he wouldn't actually get hurt. Over the years of their childhood their fights started using more and more varied items as makeshift weapons until the pointPhysical Description:
where Diana decided that she was going to leave, and attend Balamb Garden.
While she was gone, Alexius attempted to get his younger sister, Caitlyn interested in the same things that Diana had been interested in. Unfortunately, Alexius never quite managed that. While he did hear quite often from Diana, it became more and more obvious over the years that his parents didn't exactly approve of Diana's choice, always being rather curt whenever she spoke to them. Of course, as the years went by, they seemed to warm back up to Diana, as she had proven herself to be incredibly skillful at what she was doing.
However, it was obvious that Alexius's family didn't want to 'lose' another child to the draw of Balamb Garden. As such, when Alexius actually showed interest in following the lifestyle that his sister took up, his parents were not pleased. Especially given that when he showed interest in the lifestyle that Diana took on, his parents were still being distant with her. Of course, he kept bugging them about it for years, until he turned fifteen. By that point, he had been arguing and fighting and pushing the point for years, even with all the trouble that it got him into with his parents.
By that point, his parents had known that he would have gone for it with or without their permission. So, they reluctantly agreed to allow him to take the Field Exam. However, when he applied..he was told that he could not yet apply. Instead, they sent him off on another mission. And the candidate that came with him to ensure that he succeeded? His sister. As luck would have it, she had graduated from the academy, and was an active member of SeeD.
Due to the difficulty of the mission that was initially assigned to him, his sister was assigned to him to assist in his objective: Obtaining a Guardian Force. The one that he was to obtain was up to what his partner thought could be handled. They weren't given a specific time to start. Instead, they were to merely inform Garden when they arrived. So the pair spent a good day catching up.
After that day of merely catching up and talking to each other, the pair finally buckled down and had a simple lesson on Guardian Forces and what precisely they did. Alexius actually picked up on this relatively quickly. However, when he asked if there were any near them, he found out that the one nearest Balamb Garden-Ifrit-had already been forced to submit to someone else. So instead, Diana used her own contacts to find out about a rumored hot spot for a Guardian Force. This hot spot had apparently once been a village, but was now subject to a near constant storm of thunder and lightning.
While Alexius was a bit iffy about this particular assignment, Diana made it rather clear that this was going to be the only one that they'd be able to quickly get their hands on. With that in mind, Alexius sighed and agreed to go along. He armed himself with a two handed sword that was heavy enough to be classified as such, but light enough to be used by Alexius with one hand. Along with that, he chose to start wearing a gauntlet that merely covered his arm from the knuckles to just below the wrist as a makeshift shield of sorts. However, given that it had spikes, it could make for a very effective weapon in hand to hand combat ranges.
With his arsenal decided, Alexius and Diana left, with Diana toting a dangerously heavy looking gunblade, with a red, jagged blade. Once they arrived, Diana made contact with Garden, and let them know that they had started their attempt to neutralize and obtain a Guardian Force. They were given a maximum allowed time of fifteen minutes. And oh were they needed. The Guardian Force that they encountered was one that utilized wind and lightning, while Diana's Guardian Force utilized ice and water.
If it had come down to just Diana against this guardian force, it very well could have ended poorly. However, thanks to Alexius's assistance, they subdued it with mere moments left on the clock. Once they defeated it, it became clear that this was the Guardian Force Quezacotl. After a few quick moments where Diana taught Alexius how to junction, they returned to Balamb. The trip took a few hours, but that was all they needed to find a few monsters that enabled Alexius to refine spells out of.
After that, he was finally able to take the field exam with a team of new students. Thanks to how effectively they all worked together, things went off without a hitch. The only time things REALLY got hairy was when it was time to take the written exam. While Alexius always was great at doing practical things, he was never really a bookworm. Fortunately, he did actually pass the written exam, and was accepted into Balamb Garden.
Unfortunately, things weren't exactly easy for Alexius. There were quite a few immature graduates who went out of their way to make life harder for him, because they were shown up by his sister. For a while, he took this in stride. However..one of them in particular annoyed Alexius. Eventually, the two ran into each other at the training center. And after a few snide comments..Alexius couldn't stand it anymore. He challenged him to a duel.
His opponent, being an arrogant graduate, agreed. At first, his arrogance seemed to be earned, as Alexius merely was deflecting or blocking against his attacks for the vast majority of the early fight. However..he was merely getting used to his opponent's fighting style. After a few moments, he was finally able to discern the weaknesses in his pattern, and started to gain the upper hand.
Unfortunately, he did end up losing. This did end up with his opponent being somewhat proven correct. However, the incident remained a secret between the two of them, and they explained away their wounds as being part of an ambush from monsters in the training area. After that, things seemed to get into a rather normal pattern. He would occasionally be sent off on missions.
But more often than not, he was spending time training, getting used to his Guardian Force, and all in all just gathering up skill. Eventually, he even graduated from Balamb Garden, and was an actual SeeD, rather than a SeeD cadet. Unfortunately, he didn't really get a chance to celebrate. After he went to sleep following graduation, he blacked out. What happened to him was something he didn't know, and couldn't recall. But it was something that would change the course of his life.
However, when he did wake up..it was in an entirely different place than he had ever known. He had been woken up by some concerned citizens, and found himself in what appeared to be a sleepy little town. He asked several questions..but everyone looked more and more concerned. Eventually, he was told that he was in Twilight Town. That was when it clicked. He was in a completely different place than his home.
There was no Twilight Town in Archipelago. For now, he has been doing his best to adjust to life..but he has the nagging feeling that something isn't quite right..
(Note: While I do not have his Dive To Heart in his History section, it is very much part of it. However, due to its length, it will be kept in a spoiler tab in the Roleplay Sample section.)
LEAGUE OF LEGENDS, Ezreal is claimed by Alexius Frey
"You know..it's people like you. Those people who assume that they're better than everyone just because they have a little more skill or power..It's people like you that disgust me."-Alexius, moments before the first duel that led him to the infirmary at Balamb Garden.
"Yeah, yeah. I hear it all the time. 'Diana was like this' or 'Diana could do this'. But you know what? I don't mind it. I don't match up to my sister. But you know what that means? It means that things can only go up from here. I think more people need to look at life like that." - Alexius, the first time someone asked him why he never gets angry at being compared to his older sister.
Jeez had graduation been a pain. In all of his years of being a SeeD, Alexius had been shot at, sliced up, smacked with various types of magic, and even beat around with people’s bare fists. But nothing had grated on him as badly as the graduation ceremony had just done. It was a whole thing that they did in the middle of the night. And yet..somehow he was still overheating like it had been done in the middle of a desert during high noon.
So of course, the moment he got into his own dorm room, he all but tore the heavy, formal uniform off of his body, ending up standing in the middle of his room in his underwear. Once that exceedingly hot outfit was off of him, Alexius sighed in relief. ”Jeez..you’d think a military academy would be more mindful of how their outfits affect their students..” He muttered to himself as he grabbed a towel off of the back of the chair near his desk, wiping his chest and face down with it before he dug around in the top drawer of his dresser, slipping on his pajama pants as he yawned, glancing at the clock.
Jeez..it was one in the morning. And once that realization hit him, a wave of exhaustion hit soon after. They had all spent the whole morning rehearsing for graduation, and as such had been woken up even earlier then usual. So of course, he felt a little weird as he stumbled towards his bed, collapsing face first onto it. He was out like a light within seconds.
And yet..he opened his eyes. This was..different. He felt awake..aware even. And yet, he knew he had fallen asleep. So much to see..so little time to see it.. Okay..that was strange. He could have sworn he heard something..but..it was still completely silent, and pitch black. And now that he was actually trying to parse things out..it felt like he was standing. Things were getting stranger. However..he did step forward.
That was a mistake. The moment his foot landed, he was blinded. Not by the darkness that had been surrounding him. No. But by a sudden burst of light as the darkness around him suddenly transformed. When his eyes had finally adjusted, he was in a rather..familiar place. As he looked around, it became clear. This was the forest..the one near his home.
What once was closed, will soon begin to open.
There it was again. An unidentifiable voice. And yet..it wasn’t coming from around him. It seemed more like..an intruding thought then anything. However, as he started to look around to try and get his bearings..he noticed something. The glint of a glass plate. One was in front of him. And in his peripheral vision..the glint of two more glass plates.Without warning, these plates started rising.
The one in front of him looked..like the pedestal that he and Diana had found before encountering Quezacotl..but in various colors of glass. It was a small pedestal..but he could make out what looked to be Diana’s face on it, her eyes closed. With that in mind, he turned to face the plate to his left. It too looked like the previous one did. This one held his father’s face. His eyes too, were closed. And last but not least, he faced the pedestal on his right. This one..had his mother’s face on it. With her eyes closed as well.
So many paths. All with different outcomes. All leading further into the light.
As that thought vanished, bursts of light shone from each pedestal. And now..there were floating items. One was a sword..the very sword he used as a SeeD. Another held what looked to be..a buckler shield. He had seen many of those among the less confident students.
And the final pedestal held..a child’s idea of a magic wand. A stick with a star on it. However, it was scaled up to his size.
Every path has a door. The only difference is which path we decide to take. Examine each item carefully.
Okay..this was getting stranger and stranger. Still..he didn’t see any way out of this. With that in mind, he walked forward, running his hands over the first item. His oh so familiar sword. And beneath that..his gauntlet. This one wasn’t hovering. However, the moment he laid his hands on the sword, that thought interrupted again.
The sword. A living duality. A symbol of strength, but also of fear. An adept tool of destruction.
After that, the thought went away again. He stepped back..and turned to the left. After a good few moments of walking, he placed his hand upon the buckler.
The shield. Seen as a sign of fear. And yet, it is also a sign of determination, and a different kind of strength. A simple tool, but one that can save many lives.
And once again, the voice was gone once the monologue was finished. With a reluctant exhale, he walked over to the final item, placing his hand upon it.
The wand. A symbol of powers known to very few. A well of strength for those with the acuity for things less corporeal. A simple tool at a glance, but one that is dangerous in the right hands.
After the monologue was finished, he removed his hand. And the thought voiced itself once again.
There are many paths. Paths that have been walked by others, but ones that only you can truly make yours. Choose your path.
Well..that was vague, at best. Even with Quezacotl, there was a little more info. Still, he sighed. The basic idea wasn’t lost on him. This voice wanted him to pick one of these items. Without hesitation, he walked up to the first pedestal he had seen, his hand wrapping around the handle of his trusty claymore, while his free hand slid into the gauntlet he had become oh so accustomed to. And yet..something still felt..off. The weapon was lighter in his hand than it usually was.
Once he pulled the weapon free of whatever force had been causing it to float, the other two items rusted away into nothing, scattering on the wind. Their pedestals also cracked, and fell apart.
Bravery. A trait seen in very few. Or..perhaps it is obstinance, masquerading as bravery. Regardless..the path is before you. Follow it. But beware. Not all problems are solved by bravery alone.
With that..the pedestal he had chosen retreated into the ground, forming into a familiar cobblestone shape. As he looked up, the scenery itself shifted, the trees becoming less tightly knit, and forming a path forward. With that in mind, he instinctively slung his weapon over his shoulder. And..as he let go, both the sword and gauntlet vanished. But..he felt this strange connection. Almost like..they would appear again the moment he needed them.
Well..this was getting stranger and stranger. Still, he had no choice. He moved forward, walking down the path. As he looked around, all he saw was a normal forest, the trees blending into a tighter and tighter network of them until all he saw was blackness. That was worrying. Especially when the fairly brightly lit path that he had been following started to turn more and more shaded. Eventually, he stopped. The trees had encircled him again.
In all beings, there is a light. In some, this light is brighter than others.
As the thought started its monologue, some of the shadowy areas of this part of the forest got darker..and started to rise. That was..worrying.
Those with particularly bright lights, attract the darkest of shadows.
It said, as each shadow rose to reveal a somewhat cartoonish portrayal of someone’s shadow. Its head was massive. But what made it clear that this was still a threat? Those eyes. They glowed a bright yellow. And these large creatures..they didn’t stop twitching. Without any more words being beamed into his mind, Alexius took up his usual combat stance, his weapon of choice appearing in his hand, while the gauntlet popped into existence on his arm again.
Each one appeared in a flash of rather purely white light. There wasn’t time to worry about that though.
One of those blobs of darkness had..flattened itself. It was headed straight for him, and the other two weren’t all that far behind. As the first one rose from the ground, Alexius threw up his gauntleted hand, the claws of the creature bouncing off of it a bit before he started slashing at it, his weapon seeming to just smack the creature around, instead of cutting into it. However, as the other two popped up, he had to go on the defensive.
He deflected two more slashes from the other creatures, and got a few slashes of his own in. However, he eventually lost track of one of them..and felt a sudden burst of pain as the missing creature’s claws raked down his back, bringing blood to the surface. Oh man..this was real. This wasn’t just some dream. With that in mind, he started to battle more fiercely, whirling around and slamming the blade of his sword into the creature’s stomach, causing it to disappear in a puff of pure blackness.
After that, he caught one of the others pulling itself out of the ground. Before it got a chance to attack, Alexius swung his gauntleted hand, allowing the spikes lining the contact edge a chance to do their job. The force he hit with actually sent the creature reeling back a few feet. And yet..there was no blood. No blackness on the gauntlet. Nothing.
Still, he rushed forward, feeling the shifting air of a missed attack just barely graze past his body as he slammed his sword down onto the head of this one. Once again, it disappeared in a puff of blackness. He barely had time to whirl around and raise his hand up before the final creature swung at him, its claws bouncing off of the gauntlet’s metal. With that in mind, he actually whipped his hand to the side, smashing the back of his gauntlet into this creature’s face. That was it. He held his hand up in the air..and nothing happened.
This was bad. Normally that called down a bolt of lightning due to his connection with Quezacotl. That meant one thing. Quezacotl wasn’t here. That worried him. He had come to rely on that bird’s abilities, in at least some form. With a heavy sigh, he instead threw up his guard, deflecting another set of slashes from this creature before slashing at it with his sword, making it vanish as well.
But, this is an act of balance. Light begets darkness..but it also keeps it at bay.
Another path opened up. Without missing a beat, he walked down it, his weapons vanishing again. This time, he kept an eye out. Nothing really changed. Even the creatures from before didn’t appear again. However..once again, the path came to a closed area. This one held..a mirror. As he walked up to it, the voice spoke up again.
However, this is a delicate balance. And sometimes, the shadows overtake the light.
It said as Alexius stared into the mirror..only to watch as the glass started to turn an inky black, one which slowly seeped into the reflection. He took a step back..and another. This wasn’t good. However, he didn’t run. Even when his reflection gained those same unnervingly yellow eyes.
But, fear not. For you hold a great power.
It said as the reflection started to walk out of the mirror, its shape distorting and warping, growing in size until its head was peeking out from the top of the clearing. This thing was massive. And it looked more human and realistic than what had come before it. He could hear the path behind him closing off, the sound of shaking leaves making it clear that there was no way out of this.
What made things worse was that now..the sun had gone down. It had been setting this whole time, and he had been too preoccupied with the sights and strange things around him to notice. That made things challenging. Making this thing out in the dead of night..that was hard. But..he didn’t have to. It seemed that the area around him was..still lit. It was merely the area above the canopy of the forest that was dark. However, he had to dodge out of the way as one of this massive creature’s hands came to swat at the ground. Oh god. Even as he rolled out of the way, he felt the tremors caused by this creature’s weight hitting the ground.
Still, he couldn’t waste an opportunity. The moment he got to his feet, he took a swing at this creature’s arm. As was expected, it didn’t seem to even make it flinch..or react at all. So, Alexius swung at it a few more times, grabbing hold of the sword with both hands now to put more force into his strikes. As he connected more and more times, the creature slowly raised its hand, a pool of darkness forming around where that hand had been. Oh no.
He could see smaller versions of the creatures from before appearing out of it. Thankfully, only three of them appeared before the darkness was spent. And now the thing was standing there. Before any of the creatures could move, he took a swing at one. It was almost immediately destroyed. Oh. So these creatures were more fragile than the previous ones.
Still, that didn’t stop the other two from grouping up around him, moving rapidly even without pressing themselves into the ground. He swung again, and caught both creatures in the same swing. That made the massive one move again, its arms panning out to the sides before it brought them up to the..heart shaped hole in its chest.
And if he had thought he was in trouble before..oh, seeing the purple energy that was gathering in that hole was more than enough to make him understand how bad of a situation he was in. However, it wasn’t until the creature let loose that energy that Alexius panicked..and threw up his gauntleted hand. The energy..bounced off of it. And hit the creature in the face, causing its head to reel back.
That had done..something. But it was angry. It balled its left hand up into a fist, and swung at the ground. Alexius rolled out of the way, and managed to get off a slash at the thing’s fingers before the fist hit the ground. However, it was still as slow at recovering as it had been previously. That gave him time to swing heavily at this creature, smacking its wrist around as much as he could. Eventually, his sword made contact..and shattered.
However..power is not always enough.
The voice said as a massive quake hit the area from the creature falling to its knees. Alexius turned and bolted at this point. But..he had nowhere to go. So, the creature’s corpse fell onto him, engulfing him in its pitch black body. It felt like he had just been submerged in a vat of tar. He was trying to claw his way out..but it wasn’t working.
Beware, young man. For the darkness will take any light that it can find. You have been given a great power. Use it wisely..
The voice echoed in his mind, his vision fading as his lungs burned, screaming for air. However..a light was appearing. A warm..orange light.
“Hey..are you okay?”
This was a different voice. Alexius groaned as he opened his eyes..to a crowd of unfamiliar faces...
