The city of Eternal Rain was experiencing something entirely new. Snow. It had started falling overnight, to the delight of the younglings in the few safe zones throughout the city, and had accumulated into a couple of sizable drifts. Children were playing in them and having play fights with the accumulated flakes of ice and snow. But that was not where Freya, Fratley, or the party they had collected was. Those safe zones were only safe thanks to the spears and blades of the Dragon Knights, and the militaries of both Burmecia and the former Cleyrans. The rest of the city was still closer to a war zone than a habitable space, even after the long interim from the actual war responsible for this state of affairs. Bandits and monsters infested every nook and cranny, which is precisely why Freya had gone recruiting. While Sir Fratley and the regulars patrolled and slowly chipped away at the edges of the borders, it was Freya and her irregulars whose current mission was to thin out the local monster and bandit population to allow for a safer and quicker recapture. The specific place they were attempting to clear today was the row of houses connecting one of the Knights' old barrack houses, now a strategic base of operations for the Cleyran army, and the residential district nearest to the Palace. If they could clear this area of threats, the regulars would be able to isolate and absorb the territory behind it all the way to the wall, turning two small pockets into a fairly large safe zone.
And so here they were. Freya herself was at the rear of the group, her movements sure and confident even in the slippery conditions enveloping her home while she kept an eye on her recruits: Vivi, the black mage doll and successor of the original who'd been recovered from another world. Zidane, the rogue who'd done the recovering and a hero of Cleyra in his own right who had saved dozens of people during the evacuation. And Nil, a mysterious off-worlder highly recommended for the mission who apparently needed the experiences.

Yes. Vivi noted the children playing in the snow with the wide-eyed wonder that some may have come to expect from him. While he might have forever been bound to an 'age' Vivi was no child. He'd simply seen too much, learned too much. He had his moments of innocent wonder, but they were fleeting and often replaced very quickly by a sense of responsibility that was more pressing than his curiosities. From the ground he gazed up at the sky, waddling in the direction of wherever he was meant to go with this curious assembled troupe. He'd wanted to tell Freya the day she'd come to the castle that he wanted to help with efforts of the dragon knights but he'd gotten too scared to say so and Vivi idly wondered if Freya had gotten to know him well enough that she knew without him saying so.
Vivi paused when the others did, very nearly running into the backside of the behemoth boy whom Vivi just did not have the strides in him to keep up with easily. Startled from his wondering mind, Vivi backed up a step then leaned to peer around him. There was a row of what looked like houses almost but they were different somehow. Vivi squinted at them and noted with an impending sense of dread that an absurd amount of shadows seemed to lurk there in those places. Then again most of the city had befallen the same illness. He drew his staff and held it tight waiting for command.

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky. Nil was...nervous to say the least. But it was a strange kind of nervous. Not unlike the nervous energy he felt during the tournament. An anticipation of things to come yes, but unlike that of the pre-determined rounds, the behemoth had no idea what to expect from this outing and it left him feeling vulnerable. More so than usual. Where he alone this would feel far worse, but thanks to his friends at his side he was able to swallow that concern for the time being. Zidane had recommended, or rather should one say he volunteered Nil for this expedition into the rainy — currently snowy — city. That's not to say that he wouldn't have offered to help of course! Miss Freya seemed very nice, and she was a good friend of Zidane, Vivi, and Beatrix, so how could he say no? Besides! Since arriving on Gaia and beginning his training, he had the urge to explore and see more of his friends' home. This was like killing two birds with one stone...What a bad phrase that was, he'd never hurt poor birdies like that. Taking the 'lead' of sorts, given that Zidane was always more than a few steps ahead of the group scouting ahead. Being unfamiliar with the land but knowing that it was supposedly infested by creatures and bandits, Nil had already had his keyblade in paw as he glanced around at the dark and frankly dreary landscape. He could only imagine the almost melancholy beauty of this land before whatever disaster befell it, the snow could only add to it. Coming to a stop, Nil cast his gaze around towards the shadows and sniffed at the air. He had learned that anything could be lurking just out of sight. There were unfamiliar scents about the place but none that he could place beyond dust and damp. "So uh...where do we begin?"MADE BY VEL OF GS

The world of Gaia was effected, as any other, by the changes of the universe which governed the balance of their world. Even if there were no Keyblades born Gaia and no Star Shards that had hidden their world domination access it still meant that come the passing of time these things began to effect them. On the upside the Mist had left for a time, allowing them to chabgeytheir ways, but in places closest to the Ilfa tree roots it has remained particularly prolific. Zidane had a suspicion it had something to do with Heartless, but it was just a thought. Something in his guy told him otherwise. Reaching down to his stomach he touched his belly, the though overcome by the draining sensation of a growling stomach. His gloved digits dug against the fabric of his shirt, pulling the sleeveless blouse out from the band of his trousers. A few scars lined the thief's torso and sides. A close encounter with a Grand Dragon had left a lasting memory. He should have listened to the Moogle couple, instead he nearly got his friends turned into minced meat bits. Sighing the rogue pushed his shirt down, letting it messily hang. The thief himself hung upside down by his tail on a lamppost that stuck out lopsided from the raised cobblestone streets of Burmecia. He remembered his first time here. He was so absorbed with finding Dagger ge had not taken a deep look at the plight Freya and her people had truly suffered. He running headlong into danger, ready to defend his friend's home, but any empty moment was filled with thoughts of Dagger. As much as they were now! He crossed his arms over his chest: legs crossed as if he sat on the ground below. "But I didn't think it snowed in Burmecia…" he said aloud, the group not far from earshot. Monsters still seemed to congregate in the square, looking for prey. He looked towards the Barracks, but they seemed hauntingly abandoned. He had thought he saw something moving around but it was probably a ra-- ! He pulled himself up and landed on the top of the crooked light post. "I see you finally arrived." He grinned, crouched in place, wearing his usual attire despite the cold. Thumbing behind him his tail hung down like a rope pull, wiggling occasionally. "Just a few beasts out that way but it's really quite in this spot. Are you sure there are bandits here besides myself?" Honestly were he to look at this place as a lowlife it would make a great his out, but those monsters… made it too risky. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

Freya drew herself level with Nil and Vivi, then leapt from a standstill to the arm of the post that Zidane himself had been hanging from a moment before. It groaned a little under the combined weight of the burmecian knight and her gear plus the thief occupying the top of the post itself, but it held firmly enough for her to crouch on the arm and set her spear against the post to get a better look into the gloom. "We begin, young squire, by locating the creatures lurking in the shadows." she said, checking her surroundings as she tried to see what was lurking in the shadows. Without looking directly at the genome to whom her next was directed, she added under her breath. "Though admittedly you are the largest source of larceny to which the city can lay claim at the moment, there are indeed some few bandits scattered further in the more lawless regions. King Oberon did not take kindly to their lifestyles given our trying circumstances, and bade me remind you to limit your own acquisitiveness to recovering their ill-earned spoils lest you share in the sort of example he intends to make of them. I reminded him that you are, of course, now royalty and therefore needn't subsist off thirdhand treasures."
She intended to remind the group to be careful of ambushes while they spread out, but something caught her eye, or more accurately her ear, in the muffled night the snowfall provided, and she held up a hand. Sh peeeeered into the shadows, then leapt backwards in a full backflip that carried her over a blurred shadow flying past too swiftly to see clearly. When she landed she was behind Nil and Vivi, with her spear pointing into the gloom.
"Master Vivi!" she said, slipping into the short, terse commands she issued to soldiers. "Provide support. Use your discretion, but if possible focus on whatever target Zidane or Nil are engaging, but open with enough fire to give us visibility. Nil, your primary task right now is to ensure Master Vivi stays safe. Zidane! Engage at your discretion!" Eyes started glowing in the darkness around the group, which mostly turned out to be at least half a dozen basilisks closing in on the party. Freya's weapon, however, was fixed in the other direction, where something that looked like an Ironite with epaulets and tattered wings seemed to materialize from the smoke. It bore a strange crest on its chest that the Burmecian did not recognize, but intended to treat as a target. Unbeknownst to her, the Heartless had indeed arrived in Burmecia and one now flew before them.

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky. This was beginning to feel just like the start of an adventure novel. Where the hero and his crew are sent out to take care of something but then something goes wrong and only the hero sur...vives...Okay now he really hopes that this is going to be nothing like some adventure novels. Nil took a deep breath and shook his head to push that thought aside. Having doubt or fear could cause him to falter and that's the last thing he'd want! He'd been training for things like this after all. He couldn't let his friends down. The robed battlemage watched as Freya lept high up onto the post where Zidane was perched. The high ground gave them a better vantage point, but as much as Nil wanted to get better look himself, he was fairly certain that adding his weight onto the already creaking metal would surely cause it to snap like a twig. For now he'd busy himself staring out into the snow filled city. Zidane's call of there just being a few beasts was a relief to be sure. If it was just some creatures they could handle it no problem! Bandits on the other paw...Nil didn't feel that great about fighting people outside of a tourney...maybe if they were here they could just scare them off? That shouldn't be hard, right? Though maybe it'd not be that simple, as something that Freya managed to see sent the dragoon leaping back over their heads. With the orders called out, the behemoth called his keyblade to his paw and readied himself, just as several monsters shambled forth from the darkness to close in. But the bug eyed beasties were the least of their worries. No, the big scare came from the winged baddie. Though he knew not what to call the creature he had seen something similar before. Somewhere that felt like a waking dream. But now wasn't the time for introspection, Nil had his orders and gripped his keyblade tight, putting himself between Vivi and the shadow creature. "Got it. Be careful, that thing's going to be tougher than it look!"MADE BY VEL OF GS

The rouge was enchanted by the snow. It was pretty queer so it was a bit memorizing. His arms reached up to cross over his chest as he pondered the situation. Things seemed to be changing a lot, some for the better while others... Zidane blinked when the post shifted beneath the extra bit of movement. Zidane was tempted to remark on the excess cakes Freya had been delighting in with her meetings with Dagger, but with her spear in hand he thought better of it. His head would tilt to the side at her remark, only to smugly grin at the claim to fame! While a churl on some measure the rogue did seem to enjoyed the idea of being considered princely in his art! Conjuring himself such a state of mind did nothing for his ego, really. He knew his limitations and he had only partook in such acts in order to save them! The armory had been ransacked for a few useful pieces before that fateful meeting with Beatrix. Though prior to any efforts of war and there after Zidane's presence and sticky fingers were renowned for parting stall vendors and their produce. The occasional sweet far outweighed gold or gear. Luckily for him as such would indenture him to the state's judicial system if the King did not view the hero's acts with boyish charm equal to Puck's antics! The king did not take kindly to the brigands, he could understand. They were more violent and vindictive, greedy! For Zidane it was more a sport. Baku never instilled a sense of overwant in them. Indulgence, sure, but if you didn't need you gave. He supposed it was because they had all been orphans in one way or another. "Right, right." Zidane lamented and sighed, shrugging. "Right o' cap'n!"He grinned and set his hands on his hips releasing his taut tail so she didn't have a stomp on it. Dropping from the lamp he flipped back, hitting the uneven cobblestone with a click and clap from the soles of his boots. Hands had come to his sheath and summoned the shimmering, pink blades that he was known for. The gleaming weapons were known to be the bane of any caster and more so to the flesh of any fiend or fellow. Clapping the blades together to create a sword he spun it around with prideful grace as he showed off. he tossed it into the air and flexed his form, loosing muscles as the singing sword rained back down. The rogue jumped and dashed forward through the air at one of the Basilisk. With his sword tight in his grip he swung out while still mid air. He landed and slid across the snowy ground. "Watch out for their gaze!" He remembered how hard it was to handle these things the first time they had come through the rainy city. Before finishing his assault he would wrap his tail around the limb of his target and attempt to flip it tail over tummy. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

The Dragon Knight nodded, acknowledging her companions' assessments of the situation. The basilisks did indeed have a petrifying gaze, which Zidane had neatly avoided by the expedient method of being behind the bulk of them. The thief's tail caught around the basilisk's wrist and as he leapt over the creature its own ungainly stance pulled it off-kilter. His blades had found purchase already, leaving the creature badly wounded and scrabbling for purchase on its back. Two of its comrades had aimed their baleful gazes at Zidane, but as the monkey-tailed treasure-hunter was no longer there, those attacks missed. Another pair charged in after Nil, their tongues trying to lash out at the behemoth and his tasty tasty meats. A fifth basilisk held back and stared down Vivi, who failed to avoid its gaze and was paralyzed! The final creature hesitated, seeing its friend nearly eviscerated and laid out. The not-quite-an-Ironite started gliding upwards in lazy circles. Freya's spear dipped as she stared at it with an expression that only just managed to not look disgusted. Fortunately she was ready when it dove for Nil, and leapt to intercept it with the business end of her weapon. Judging by the burst of light coming out of its other side, this thing counted as a dragon. Excellent, that made things MUCH simpler. Her impact wasn't enough to knock the beastie out of the sky, but it was enough to carry them both over the behemoth's head and past the cluster of baddies assailing him instead of directly into the young lad. Wouldn't do at all to get him killed on a training mission.

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky. Yikes, yikes, yikes! These things could turn people to stone?! Was that normal?! Could you undo it?!...Given that neither Freya or Zidane were terrible panicked when Vivi turned to stone before their eyes, the answer was probably yes? Nil hoped anyway...As it seemed like he would get a tongue lashing if he wasn't careful, Nil swung his keyblade up as the first tongue drew near, knocking it aside before thrusting his free hand forward towards the second just in time for the Blizzard spell he coalesced in his palm to collide with it. It was at this moment that the behemoth had a chance to glance up as the shadow of a bermecian and...whatever that thing was zoomed over head. "Woaaah..." that was so cool! He had to know how she did that, that was awesome. But that would have to wait for later. For now, Nil would break away from the first two basilisks that attacked him and put himself between the petrified Vivi and his assailing creature. He wasn't sure just how safe it was to leave the basalt black mage alone like this, but he wasn't about to find out if he could help it. No way his friend was going to end up rock candy for some overgrown lizard! MADE BY VEL OF GS

It had to be Basilisk!
Leave it to Burmecia to house such difficult wildlife even in the dead of winter! "How about you hibernate!"Zidane had launched himself from the previous attack on the first stone gazer and landed on the snowy ground. He threw one of his Mage Mashers, aiming for the Basilisk's tongue in hopes of pinning it on a nearby surface to help out Nil in his defenses. The rogue made a quick movement and dashed toward his original Target with his remaining weapon to cut through it as he dashed passes. He did not bother looking back as he held his glove covered hand up. He turned his head slightly to the side so his grin could be seen."Like old times, huh Freya?" But those times had been difficult. The pain and turmoil everyone was suffering and the selfishness Zidane had displayed through it. He deeply regretted his actions of youth, but would not dwell on them. What mattered was that he was here now supporting Freya in her time of need. He had grown a lot from that destructive, rambunctious youth that tore apart taverns and caroused city streets with his drunken band. That destructiveness was now focused, trained on those who sought to do the destroying and in this case it would not matter who or what Zidane was. He was Zidane and no matter how strong he was he always would use that power for his friends!"Freya, look out!" In his cocky showboating he would catch the Wyvern making a dive for the remainder of the back row of soldiers. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

Freya's initial strike on the Wyvern had diverted its course, but no sooner had her feet come to rest on the face of one of King Oberon's predecessors' statues, Freya forgot which one at the moment, than the draconic fiend had adjusted in midair and made a second dive. The basalisk tongue that Nil had blocked was successfully diverted away, and subsequently pinned to the frozen ground beyond the behemoth by the dagger Zidane had thrown. The second of the creatures caught a face full of ice when its tongue rebounded from Nil's attack. It was alive, but dazed, and its companion was struggling to free its tongue by hopping to where it was pinned and attempting to dislodge the weapon by headbutting it. Meahwhile, the gentleman thief's primary target expired pitifully and its companion refocused, attempting to lash at the monkey-like rogue with its tongue. The other two, having successfully enstatued the black mage, turned their attentions to the still active threats, one hopping around Nil to lash at Freya and the other making a charging leap at Zidane. Freya herself had already been primed for an attack, and had used the momentum of her first hit to press her against King Fionn's, that was his name, face and pushed off of it, dropping onto the Ironite's back and dodging the basalisk tongue in the same motion. Her added weight was enough to once again throw off the monster's dive even if she couldn't bring her spear to bear from the awkward relaunch. She did push off hard against its head though sending her high into the air and, thanks to our good friend physics, throwing it to the ground.

I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky. Nil could hardly believe just how cool both Zidane and Freya were. It was obvious that they had loads more of experience than the behemoth had at this sort of thing. Leaping around and knocking the mean lizards for a loop or twelve. Not to mention whatever the heck that flying thing was. Freya made it look easy! He'd been so distracted by the display he hadn't caught one of the basalisks slipping by to try and strike at the Bermecian, but even still she'd been ready for it! The sheer display of acrobatics displayed by both her and and Zidane were honestly kind of awe inspiring for him. But there he goes again, getting distracted. He shakes his head hard, he can be in awe later, right now there were things trying to hurt his friends and he wasn't about to have that. "Oh no you don't!"Rushing after the basalisk that was trying to leap towards Zidane, Nil would hop up after it and slash his keyblade at the beast twice before swinging hard downwards to ground the creature before it could lay a tongue on the thief. One back on the ground, Nil would slip around the basalisk putting himself between it and Zidane now. "Thanks for the assist, Zidane, figured I'd return the favour." he would say with a little giggle. MADE BY VEL OF GS

Zidane landed in a crouch after taking out one of the wyvern, but as soon as he landed his tail would sweep to the side, head cocking up as the rest of the feinds would assemble to make their counter assault. The rouge ducked from the first Basilisk's strike before rolling out of the way and the other landed with a quick Reverse Air Dash. This drew him closer to the pinned 'lisk. The rouge would slide to his feet and spin around to bow to the pinned lizard before yanking his blade from the ground, just as it pulled back, letting it send itself in full force, backwards.
"Pardon me, could use this!" He spun his blades, both now back in his possession. "Let's finish them off!" They were hear to clean up and Zidane wasn't about to leave Freya a mess to sweep under the rug!
The thief charged forward with a swift Air Dash towards the Basilisk that had hopped on him and bashed into it with his blades with Rumble Rush, knocking it back.
"Nil we need something flashy, come on, finish it off!" Zidane called as he pointed to the grounded Wyvern. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS

Nil needn't have bothered repositioning, his triple slash was enough to knock the reptilian terror down, and Zidane's follow up attack ended its existence entirely. The freed basalisk had been sent sprawling by his tongue being unpinned and had to spend a few moments righting itself, however its companions were in fighting shape still. One of the three remaining basilisks attempted to turn its petrifying gaze on Freya, while each of the others chose one of the remaining heroes for a headbutt attack. The not-an-ironite managed to right itself and begin ascending again, but Freya was ready for this. The Burmecian launched herself from her new vantage point, dodging the basilisk's gaze, and slammed her spear into the beasty's back, sending it sprawling again. But she was already charging toward the sprawled basilisk to stab it through the belly with her mighty weapon.
