Out from the black, he came, stepping onto an unfamiliar pad of grass and soil and letting the swirling void close behind him. Stood in front of a tree, he looked across the field-like park to the opposite tree and glance about from there, vaguely recognizing an environment he only recalled visiting on very brief occasion. He had been to this World, yes, but it was among the far less useful places he'd seen. Why had he disregarded it? Its technology was prodigious, yes, but not enough to surpass the uselessness of the mystically skeptical citizens that owned it. It reminded of him of just how far off the memories were of times when such things weren't at the forefront of his mind. The life of a careless traveler was one of curiosity and ease. His, meanwhile, was one of stress, paranoia, and constant concern over whether this or that was worthwhile.
In theory, he finally had a chance to take steps back toward that simpler life, but first he had to find someone.
To put it more honestly, though, Xehanort felt that it wouldn't be too difficult to do so. He could feel the strength of that connection pulling the two of them together- No, that boy wasn't the only one with connections, and the old Master knew he was so close to seeing that old friend of his. It was uplifting to be assured that Eraqus, too, had survived, but that didn't mean there wouldn't be a challenge awaiting the two of them. It would be tremendously awkward at best when they spoke again. Death isn't the sort of trip one returns from so casually, after all, but these two had experienced it together! They'd surely move past the conflicts of before and instead think of what was to happen now, and later.
And so, he spoke. "Are you there, Eraqus?" he probed the morning air with his words, peeking around at the nearby scenery to catch sight of the person he knew for a fact was present, and yet, hadn't quite shown himself.

Running a few errands for Yachiyo, Eraqus had collected a modest sum of groceries for the both of them. Yet as he stepped out of the store, he felt a presence he'd hoped not to encounter so soon.
Furrowing his brow, he'd leave his haul with her, apologising and saying that he had a meeting to keep that he failed to mention.
While it would probably mean that he would have a few extra things to do tonight, this was important.
To think that he would appear again so soon. He could hardly believe it. Eraqus would make his way to Xehanort's location, meeting with someone that he had once considered a friend, he would greet him with a stern gaze. A look of malice that he had built up ever since his betrayal.
"A part of myself had hoped you weren't still around, that maybe you wouldn't return. However, I suppose I should have known better."

Sure enough, he was there, the friend who, agendas aside, Xehanort had come to realize he missed dearly. It was such a surreal sort of relief to see that he, too, had returned.
...Which was why it stung so much to be fixed by his glare, and to recognize the fury in those eyes. Xehanort was tempted to think it was his paranoid imagination until his 'friend' spoke up with words that were just as harsh as that look. He had hoped they could reunite with a smile, but that hope was quickly being proven as delusion, and then replaced with confusion. Then, a sinking pit of of self-doubt. In a matter of seconds, the old Master felt his understanding of recent events had been completely dash.
"Eraqus, don't act like you never... Like you don't remember when..." Even Xehanort, usually composed to the end, found it hard to respond to this hostility. It was always hard, trying to talk to someone with a face like that. It was a skill he once perfected, but there were gaps in Xehanort's confidence now- Something he hadn't noticed until he was confronted with this realization that, no, he hadn't been forgiven. It was a lie, a trick of the light, and one that had him struggling to comprehend what levels he was offended on. A moment of quiet passed, and he felt his resolve return, the cold, bitter solidarity that he'd expected to abandon here rushing back into him.
He blinked, still not quite believing it. "You really don't know, do you?" he pondered, "What you said to me? How it ended?" In truth, Xehanort had already decided that he didn't need that question to be answered. His hand was already set aside, and his weapon had already been pulled from the void, the blue-silver Keyblade with the clock face head and the gears in its hilt. He knew this side of Eraqus, though he'd only seen it twice. To talk him down was to waste everyone's time. "Will you send me off again, then, or have you forgotten how to do that too..?"

Eraqus' eyes would stay dead center on their target with a hawk-like gaze that peered into what semblance of a soul he believed the other master had. Yet instead of Xehanort's usual calm demeanor, he saw a flash or two of confusion. Was he feigning sincerity, or was he being genuine. No, he couldn't be, Eraqus had made that mistake one too many times already. Schemers like him thrived on sidestepping around things. It wasn't until they met someone that came at them with full force that they would start to squirm. Well he wasn't about to let Xehanort make a fool of him and twist his sympathy. Never again!
"Oh I remember everything, Xehanort. I remember a young man that I could call my friend. I remember three students that I loved dearly. I remember the several worlds I was charged with keeping safe, like others had done long before us. And I remember how you stabbed me in the back before ripping it all away!"
Eraqus' fury started boiling to the surface as a flash of light appeared in his hands, unveiling Master's Defender as the enraged master prepared himself.
"Oh I'll do more than send you off Xehanort. There was a time when I wanted to believe you had actually changed, but not now. Now I'm going to do what I should have done a long time ago." with those final words, Eraqus pointed his keyblade upwards as a pool of light appeared beneath Xehanort's feet before erupting in a bright pillar.

Xehanort could only feel himself grow ever more bitter as the scolding came. It didn't end for quite some time, and by the end he was so taken by his swelling anger that he almost missed that obvious tell. Back then, Xehanort did more than backstabbing. On the contrary, he had paid very close attention to the battle he stepped in on, any many of those details stuck with him. That's how he knew to step half a pace back and swing his weapon downward, meeting the incoming magic with that of the Keyblade. The telltale ting of a parried strike was the only warning that he was unharmed before he came dashing through the glare at his foe.
"You're still too stiff, Eraqus!" He landed just in front of the master, thrusting the Keyblade forward in a swift lunge. He was old, yes, but this fury had kept him alive for decades and would easily invigorate him now. "Freeze!" he called and followed through with his opposite hand, striking with a palm that then exploded into a barrage of ice lances, firing out at point-blank range in a guard-piercing torrent of brutal cold missiles.

A successful block. Eraqus figured that Xehanort wouldn't be struck with something so obvious. However, his eyes would widen slightly as his opponent quickly closed the gap between them. Eraqus would bat Xehanort's thrust aside, failing to see that he had a nasty surprise in store for him. He would attempt to jump aside in an attempt to avoid his spell. However, Eraqus would soon feel a deep shill sinking into his left shoulder. He would let out a brief hiss through his teeth as he fought the pain clinging to his shoulder, keeping his stance as firm as he could manage.
If Xehanort wanted to assail him with ice, then Eraqus would answer him with fire in turn! Stamping his keyblade into the ground, he was soon flanked by three pillars of flame, quickly eradicating the snow around his feet as they streamed towards his enemy. Though he wouldn't stop there, he would keep him on his toes, wanting to deprive him of as much time to relax or think as he could manage. Xehanort was smart and could think in the midst of combat, but Eraqus knew that if he gave him a chance to rest, then it could be over very quickly if he wasn't careful.
As the flames would chase Xehanort, Eraqus would dash through the snow three times in rapid succession to cut off Xehanort's attempt to escape, leaving a trail of steam and kicked up snow wherever they went. "If you confuse my vigilance...for stiffness...then you have another thing coming!"

Those first two strikes were as predictable as anything that old Master ever did. Leading his parries into sidesteps brought the charging warrior past him without fail the first two times, but that was before the flames had gotten close. "Tch." Xehanort only dignified Eraqus' assault with one quiet note of frustration before squandering it completely with another spell, this one being brought up with a hand as a tall slab of concrete erupted from the sidewalk between Xehanort and the two dangers he had taken care to position nearby each other, sectioning them both off from himself in one precise move. The first two parries were more bait than a meaningful attempt at defense.
"Really, I'd go so far as to call your vigilance impressive," he clarified, raising his voice to be heard through the brick. "Astounding, even- I still haven't met a man so quick to make his mistakes, but your haste makes you predictable. That's the difference, you see: I learned to think." Though he acted superior, and certainly had quite the dense shield to stand behind, he didn't think for a moment that the wall would last. Though Eraqus was outmatched, it would be blasphemy to think him a pushover. He'd likely break, flank or scale that wall in no time at all. "I doubt even a barricade like this would hold you for long," Xehanort mused aloud.

Guren's flames slammed against Xehanort's wall like tide, washing it in flame. It appeared that Eraqus' opponent had quite the defense set up. However, Eraqus powered through his last dash, piercing through the concrete wall as if it were but mere glass. With single motion of his keyblade, several chains of light would fire from it's point, coiling and binding the debris as he used what momentum he had left to spin himself in a circle, hurling the hot remains of Xehanort's makeshift shield back at him.
While Xehanort was correct about Eraqus being hasty, he neglected his potential for adaptation. Attacking in an unorthodox way was never his usual approach, but against an opponent like this, the advantage of being less predictable was something he had to have. But as the smoldering remains of the sidewalk flew at his enemy, Eraqus would dart his way forward, closing the gap as much as he could, unleashing a flurry of strikes in an effort to break past what defenses he would attempt to muster.
His plan was to storm past Xehanort's defenses, waiting for the master to stumble or make a fatal mistake. While he wouldn't hold his breath for that opportunity to show itself, he knew that Xehanort was still human, despite the darkness that enveloped his heart. Still, he had his fair share of regrets. This wasn't an easy decision for him to make, but with all that had happened, all of the things he had done, he couldn't just let things go. And if he had time to think of another scheme to cover the world in darkness...no! Eraqus would never let that come to pass! He had to finish this fast.

Xehanort couldn't have been further from right, as that wall was soon scattered into pieces, only to be thrown in a collage of heated stones. Truly, the perfect counter to a defense like that, but like with everything else Eraqus, it was too perfect. It was the first, most forceful response. It was direct. It was predictable- A theme, really. Xehanort was already prepared for it, preparing a spell that he'd grown quite fond of.
That was why, when Eraqus lobbed those stones, they didn't go far. They were quickly caught up in a freshly-conjured gravity well, a white ball of energy that sucked in anything unfortunate enough to drift close, including the concrete projectiles and the person who had thrown it. Eraqus' sprint had gotten him closer than expected, though, and Xehanort was reminded of what consequences his own haste would bring when the brunt of a Keyblade cracked against his neck, then his shoulder from the opposite side before the spell had enough effect to force the two apart. Free of that assault, Xehanort brought is fee arm across his chest to hold tight his developing bruises. He recognized the technique. It was weak, but chaotic, but its wielder was plenty strong enough to make even such an unfocused strike into something wound-worthy.
He recoiled back and rolled his battered shoulder, finding it could still move well enough. Still, he wouldn't give that injury any chance to hold him back, instead raising his Keyblade and swiping it to conjur a green light. The effect, well, that wasn't something Eraqus would know. The technique was too new for someone like him to know. Even if he did understand that something had happened, he'd first have to deal with the charging light ball that was sucking him in.

Despite his assault only having some success, Eraqus felt relief after cracking past Xehanort's guard. His old friend was clever, but even he couldn't take every ounce of pressure from an opponent if it was severe enough. However, there was still something Eraqus had to deal with. Xehanort had used a gravity spell and Eraqus was being drawn into it! Heavy as his feet were, he could feel them slipping further back as he pushed himself past any limit he could!
This wasn't good at all! He could feel his stamina drain even more with each second, growing more desperate as Xehanort had something else prepared. Yet once Eraqus had a glimpse of his hand, he made out a flicker of something he didn't want to see. Something that sent a tinge of unease through him long enough to feel a blast across his back, sending both he and his keyblade to the ground with a hard thud. Groaning and attempting to stand, Eraqus saw the darkness encroaching upon his hand for a moment, suppressing it a second later. Now that he'd thought about it, Eraqus had suspected that his connection to the light had been...diluted somehow over the course of the battle. Could the darkness have infected his heart!? Had he fallen that much to his failures?
Regardless, if his connection to the light was weakened, then he couldn't fight Xehanort on martial prowess alone. He had to regain his strength until he could face him again. Re-summoning his key to his hand, Eraqus forced a short portal of light to return him to his home within the world. He looked to his old friend once again, giving him a look of sound determination. "Just you wait, Xehanort. We're not through just yet.".
Eraqus was struck by Magneflaration! Eraqus has surrendered!
