Personality:
To strangers, Yojimbo may appear to be a slow-moving, soft-spoken person. In truth, he is conservative and deliberate, and can not only be rather loud, but extremely swift when he deems it necessary. This philosophy governs more than just his behavior, too, as most of his beliefs are formed around the basic idea that he needn’t ever do anything more than absolutely necessary to be paid at the end of the day. When payment is offered, meanwhile, he will put forth all means to fulfill the given task, even if he must ask a higher price to justify doing so.
He is incredibly shrewd, rarely spending Munny on anything that won’t directly impact his ability to gain more. He considers his skills to be exceptional, and this confidence leads him to the conclusion that he should never fight for free, even if on the side of a friend. When asked a favor of any sort, his first question will always be what the reward is. To some, he's greedy to a fault, and can't possibly be trusted, but that's just because they can't afford him. Those who have partaken of his services know that, given a hefty settlement, his work is well worth the price demanded.
History:
In cities like his, most folks’ thoughts were kept rather grounded. Sure, there was the constant advancement of technology to grab one’s attention now and then, but there was nothing truly fantastic about it. At least, not within the public eye. In truth, the mending and merging of Worlds had caused many a person and object to cross between, and while some few were dedicated to preventing it, it was inevitable that these oddities would be discovered. In San Fransokyo, a number of objects, drifting here and there between Worlds, had gotten into the hands of prestigious collectors. There, they spawned countless rumors of magic and curses which only served to further fuel their unique value.
Under these conditions, smugglers have begun to thrive. Jack, having been caught up in a poor financial situation, was pulled into the business of moving cursed items in his early adulthood. He proved to be a reliable member of this community, and had seen many bewitched things pass through his hands safely over the years. Happily married, well-respected among his bootlegger colleagues and even pulling a stable living otherwise, all was well.
Still, there was always temptation to try for more. Dealing with curses all the time meant he would be at risk of coming under their effects, and eventually the time came that he gave into the whisperings of a possessed sword that was on its way to the hands of a wealthy collector. He took the sword for himself, thinking he could sell it for a greater profit, but was naive to think the betrayal would go unnoticed. His family was abducted by the organization he served, and they warned him that, unless the sword was returned, he would not see them again. The blade had already had its effect on him, however, meaning he was overcome with his greed for the things it promised him. He swore he would take everything he wanted, and that he would sacrifice nothing in exchange. All the while, the magic weapon infected his mind with promises of riches, vengeance, and power.
Listening to these promises poisoned him further, twisting his form in the process. With new strength and cunning, he waged war on his former allies, but was unable to reclaim what was taken from him. This was all going on at the same time another disaster had struck his World, sending its inhabitants into chaos and trapping it in a violent conflict between light and dark forces. Though uninvolved, Jack was one of many who was torn away from the World when it flickered between realms, careening through the Lanes Between to wherever fate may take him. Now, he is without his home, and more importantly, without the family he had sworn to take back. All that remained was his sword, and sometime later, he came to terms with the conclusion that the sword was all he needed. He has since wandered other Worlds, lending that sword to whoever can pay enough to tempt him.

'Fraud'. He stopped when he heard that accusation. He'd been called plenty of things. That behavior was something he had gotten used to, chalking it up to being inevitable when one runs a tight business. Now, about to leave so he wouldn't have to hear the stranger speak anymore, he'd been called a fraud. He turned, looking that man in the eye so as to get his message across.
"It is a simple fact," he sounded out as steadily as he could, "that you cannot afford my service. Not once have I lied to you." The warrior turned away again, resuming his exit, and resisted the urge to state his offense with any more force than he already had. To him, the reasons really weren't that hard to understand. He was asked to take a large risk, so he demanded an equally large payment. In his eyes, there was no sane choice otherwise, especially since he knew no lesser assassin would even consider the job at all. To be called a fraud for being reasonably priced was just disrespectful.
This was all the reality of what sort of business he was in, really. Taking these risks in the name of people who woulsn't was how he'd made any money at all. Even before his life was something this violent, his role was defined by his willingness to do so. Though he knew he'd always been duped, and probably still was, he took pride in that, no matter what the reason or the pay, he got that job done. All the risks he'd taken meant he had more than enough reason to name his own price. He'd earned that right himself.
A 'fraud', they called him. The mere suggestion was fraudulent.
