* Cassialyn was not feeling much like herself at the moment. The events that had just unfolded were far more intense than she'd initially expected. Yes, she and Dieter had gone to rescue one of the orphans from her ex-fiance. It seemed like a rather straight forward thing. She planned to turn herself over to the man if they weren't able to negotiate better terms. What she didn't expect was to learn the truth about Dieter. He was a arcdaemon. She felt sick to her stomach even thinking about this truth. The orphan didn't seem as putoff by this fact, but Cass was. She'd even started to fall for the guy a bit. He'd been like her knight in shining armor since the beginning. He and the clan had saved her life when her last clan had turned on her. He'd kept her safe and was even training her better in self defense. He and the clan had become her new family and it hurt more than she expected. Who else in the clan knew the truth? Was she the first to learn this? Were they hiding this from her? It was far too much. She had initially seemed hesitant about leaving the area with Ramza, but now he seemed like the safest bet for her. The new question was what should she do? Archdaemon's were dangerous and demonic. He was likely trying to earn her trust so that he could harm her when the time was right. It explained so much. The way his eyes changed in the sewers and how he'd seemed to become quite aggressive at times. The best option she could come up with right now was to collect her belonging from her room and get out of town. It would be far safer that way. She even felt like it might be a good idea to go home and try and sort out the issues there. It might get them to call Drake off. She just didn't know what route to take. Her eyes moved over to Ramza once she saw the young orphan off to head home. "What caused your change of heart, Sir Beoulve" She half inquired as they finally reached the safety of town. At least here she could get help if this was some ploy. But if the man hadn't attempted anything yet, she doubted he would now. "Well, I guess a better question would be how you got yourself tied up with Master Hulbert." She had a lot of questions on her mind. But, that one might help her deduce how Drake kept getting assistance from seemingly decent people. Ramza Beoulve

Location: Ivalice of the Past - Outskirts of Rabanastre Mood: Worried Status: Well In the confusion, the unlikely trio managed to escape; the arid environment still echoed the sounds of the battle raging behind them, of Dieter taking on Drake's underlings.
Right now, Ramza's priority was to take Lady Frewin as far away as possible from there. The battle was keeping both parts occupied, but it wouldn't take long for a victor to emerge, and the victor would want his prize. Ramza hoped to mix within the crowds of Rabanastre until then and lose their pursuers in the process.
He almost didn't hear when Lady Frewin inquired about his motives. He didn't want to stop, but trying to force her to come with him wouldn't be the best course of action. She had good reasons to be suspicious of Ramza, and the knight knew that. As such, fighting against every impulse in his body, he sttod still, and looked her in the eye.
"I work as a sellsword, milady. 'Tis the only thing I'm good at, I'm afraid. I met Lord Drake while searching for a new contract to undertake. A man need to fill his belly, after all." He sighed. "Lord Drake claimed his wife had been kidnapped and hypnotized by a demon. He claimed she - thou - was being kept by the Demon while he mingled with society, hiding in plain sight. Lord Drake assembled a team of mercenaries to take him down. I volunteered - for the coin, and for the chance to cleanse the earth of demonic scum. 'Tis another thing I'm good at, I suppose." Flashes of his battles with the Lucavi filled Ramza's mind, but the knight pushed them aside.
"However," he continued, after a brief pause, "I'm not the kind of sellsword that buries his conscience under the gold. I could never forgive myself if I were used as a tool for evil." Again, he almost completed. "And as soon as the battle started, I realize something was off. The first signal was Lord Drake's company; the child magician who almost intercepted us. He's an old thorn in my side, an enemy that tried to kill me more than once, for the selfishiest of reasons. The fact Lord Drake had associated with such a vile creature warned me that he was not a man who cared about character. The second sign..." His gazed drifted to the black mage child who followed them; the hostage they had rescued. "Was her. No honorable man with good intentions would use a child as a hostage. That was the moment I knew I didn't want to align myself with Lord Drake anymore. For a moment I thought about siding with the Demon, but... what if Lord Drake told the truth about that? And, as it became clear... he did."
Another pause; while talking, Ramza's eyes were focused on Lady Frewin's, trying to show her his sincerity. 'Tis said the eyes are the windows to the soul, and Ramza wanted the woman to stare deep into his. Only thus he would be able to gain her trust.
"This left me in a conundrum. I couldn't trust Drake, and I obviously couldn't trust the Demon. I could only trust one thing: when two evil men fight over a woman, she is a victim." It was really no different than the political games between Larg and Goltana, with Princess Ovelia straight in the center. "Thus, the right thing to do was to protect thee. And the child, of course. Thus, here we are. I don't know the situation between you, the Demon and Lord Drake. I don't even know if I can trust thee. What if thou art still under the Demon's influence? That is, if there was any influence - maybe that was another of Lord Drake's lies. Regardless, as far as I know, you may strike me down at any moment. And if that happens, so be it. I've made my decision. I'm staying with thee until thou art safe, until both of them are dead, or until I am." His determination shone brightly in that moment. May Alma forgive him if he falls in this stupid battle that barely concerns him, but Ramza would forever be plagued by sleepless nights if he abandoned this poor woman to her predicament, stuck between a Demon and a man that might as well be one.
Somehow, someway, he would protect her. ✿ EDEL ✿

T he walk really wasn't making her feel any better. There was far too much on her mind at this moment. The talking was the best distraction she could get from her own mind. So, it was a relief that Ramza replied to her inquires. The only weird thing was hearing him refer to her as 'milady'. That was something she didn't get all too often now. At least, not since leaving her hometown of Lesalia. "Cass is fine..." She really didn't want her last name out there too often. It was easier for people to find her that way. Plus, it reminded her too much of her other life. Then again, it was better than her current situation. At least she didn't have an Archdaemon problem before she ran away from home. The young woman listened to Ramza as he explained his profession and the story he was fed. It seemed logical for him to have gotten involved. It seemed true and Drake always had a way of spinning lies very well. Cass folded her arms a bit uncomfortably as they walked. The irony was that part of his story had some truth. It was likely what made it seem so believable. He explained that his first hint at it being a lie was the fact that the child mage was involved. Then the fact that they'd kidnapped the orphan girl. At least this Ramza guy seemed polite and had good intentions. She couldn't blame him for getting wrapped up in the fight. She felt his gaze shift to her's and she locked eyes for a moment. He did seem sincere with his statements. She felt he was trustworthy enough to align with for the moment. It wasn't like she had anyone else that she could trust at this moment. Her clan likely knew about Dieter's secret. So, the safest place was with Ramza for the moment. Though, she knew she'd need to get into the clan quickly to collect her things before she could head off on her own again. But, this could take a back seat till she talked with Ramza. That's when he half questioned her roles and alliances. The woman redirected her eyes away from Ramza and sighed. "You don't have to do that. I can manage on my own. I'd hate to lock you into assisting me. I certainly can't afford to hire you. But, I do appreciate the sentiment and your help earlier. Thank you." She paused a moment before speaking up once more. She didn't feel too comfortable explaining. But, she knew that she'd need to at some point. "It's a long story, but I'm not under any influence. I ran away from my home to escape my engagement to Lord Hulbert. I'd been hiding from him a few years until he hired a clan I'd been working with to kidnap me. It would have worked had Dieter and his clan not interceded and rescued me. They took me in and I've been working with them since. I felt their trust was earned due to their rescue. Dieter..." She paused again. He was harder to explain. "I feel like I should have known. I've seen flashed that should have clued me in. But, I always thought it was my eyes playing tricks. He was the one to take me under his wing. He's been assisting a group of orphans in the Lower District... teaching them how to hold their own and hone their magic and skills. He'd started to do the same with me. I didn't have any skills other than my dance abilities until he started to tutor me... I... think I was beginning to hold feelings for him." She pulled an uncomfortable face before shaking her head. "...If there'd been influence, I'd likely have still defended him once he showed his true form... I just... It's still difficult to believe what I've just seen. How could an archdaemon fake such caring. Why would they do the charitable things they had?.... I know it doesn't matter. He's a daemon. The church expressly states their darkness... but..." Cassialyn was lost for word. She just couldn't logically see how Dieter could care, even allowing them to escape while he fought Drake.

Location: Ivalice of the Past - Outskirts of Rabanastre Mood: Worried Status: Well The Knight noded as the woman told him to use her name, rather than her surname. Being the gentleman he was, of course he would oblige.
It was now her time to share her tale; Ramza listened, trying to understand the situation he had fallen into as best as possible. Poor woman, tossed around at the mercy of fate - she had been running for years! His blood boiled at the thought; Lord Drake was indeed a demon in human clothing, obsessed with the prospective wife which did not want him - and only God knows what treatment the Lady had received prior to the engagement. The man was a scoundrel; Ramza would make him pay if they ever met.
Then, the tale turned to her time with the demon. The knight pondered what were the Demon's plans for the children - whatever it was, certainly nothing good would come out of it. He also believed Lady Cassialyn's words - she didn't seem to be under hypnotic influence. Ramza knew Demon's didn't always need such subterfuges to trick the common folk. "Demons are farsants by nature, Lady Fr--Cass." He corrected himself, before proceeding. "I've delt with many in my time. I've seen Demons that fooled the whole Kingdom into believing they were honorable cardinals and charitable church leaders. You should not feel bad for being tricked." His gaze then shifted into the young mage that followed them. "I worry what plans he may have for the children. Perhaps we should take them with us?"
He then realized he had not addressed the first thing she said - about he not needing to help. "Lady Cassialyn, my deepest wish is to assist thee. Thou do not need to pay me a single coin; 'tis my conscience, rather than my pockets, that motivate me in this endeavor. For the sake of it, please allow me to help. Besides..." He pondered for an instant if he should continue - would Cassialyn even believe the truth? Ramza knew he never would have, if someone had told him before - about other worlds, a whole universe to explore. Still, it was his best shot at assisting the woman in need. "... I may know a good place to hide thee. A place far, far away from this land - where thou husband shall never find thee, if thou are willing to leave everything behind." He was not being completely true - he did not have a concrete place in mind. But in an universe so vast, there was surely someplace for Cassialyn to have peace.

T he young woman was feeling a bit weak at the moment. It had been a lot of changes so suddenly. Cass had only started to settle into her new role with the clan. There was no trouble or curve balls thrown at her. She had a roof over her head and friends. Even feeling as though she'd found some sort of purpose in the world, at last. Now? Now she was back to the start without a destination or a home. Once more she had no roots and would need to wing it to make ends meet and find a safe place. Even with Ramza agreeing to stay by her side at this time, it didn't mean long term. At some point she'd need to fend for herself and find a new purpose. She was just so tired of running away and hiding from her problems. Unfortunately, an archdaemon was much more troublesome than a scorned ex-fiance. Plus, she didn't like the idea of killing anything or anyone. She couldn't even successfully kill a simple fiend earlier this month after it had attacked her. Running was the only viable option. Her eyes flickered over to Ramza as he spoke in response to her story. A archdaemon that pretended to be a cardinal!? That couldn't be true. The surprise on her face was apparent. "How is that even possible? A archdaemon pretending to be someone that high up in a church? It's almost unbelievable.... and a bit frightening on the same coin." She folded her arms a bit at the thought. She had no idea what Kingdom this had happened in and that it involved her entire religion. It was what her entire moral compass was built off of. If she were to find out that archdaemon's had been behind something like that, it would likely hurt her more than anything else. "As for the orphans, I don't know. There are many of them... and I doubt any would willingly leave. They wouldn't believe me if I told them the truth. Dieter is very important to them. He has always provided and they wouldn't betray him, even if they did believe me." She admitted. It hurt. She had grown very close to the children. "But, I am willing to try if you feel it might be possible." It was unreasonable. But, he'd realize how impossible it was if he saw the amount of children. It comforted her a bit when he vocalized his offer to assist her wasn't fed by the pay it might offer. It was a genuine offer and it wasn't one she could really afford to pass up. "I've left everything behind before. This wouldn't be anything new... I just need to make a stop at the Clan to collect my things and warn Ysera. Then one more stop after that..." All her things were at the clan house. Then she wanted to make a stop at the small church she'd found in the city that she'd begun to frequent. She felt she needed to pray a bit before they set off to a new area. She'd already started to direct them to the Headquarters. Ramza Beoulve

Location: Ivalice of the Past - Outskirts of Rabanastre Mood: Worried Status: Well Ramza nodded at her reply. It seemed his story of the late Cardinal Delacroix disturbed Lady Frewin worse than he expected. Perhaps she was a devout? It wouldn't be surprising - religion had always been important in Ivalice. He decided, however, to spare her of the details - of how deep the daemonic infiltration had truly run, how it managed to completely take control the Church of Ajora.
The subject then drifted to the orphans. "If they won't listen to the truth, let us not share it with them. Tell them any story that will convince them to follow us; when we manage to get to a safe distance of those two, we'll explain it to them without any hurry". Ramza felt bad tricking children, but it was for their own good. They would not be safe from the Daemon's wrath when he returned - if he returned - and, as much as it hurt his pride, Ramza was not sure he could take Dieter head-on after the power he had seen the Daemon display. He had an entire company by his side when he fought the Lucavi, and Dieter was on par with any of those foul beings.
She then voiced the need to make a few stops. Ramza feared the situation was too dire for those luxuries, but that was her decision to make, not his. He would protect her no matter what she chose. "Okay. Allow me to accompany you, Milady." He said, gesturing for her to take the lead.
