Personality:
Cain was once a strong and gentle Keyblader who took the teachings of his Master to Heart and worked to be strong to Maintain the Balance. Yet, 400 years sealed within a cramp, damp, dark cave on Neverland had wrecked and eventually repaired his mind, changing Cain in a couple of ways. Where once was a composed individual now is an individual who will occasionally talk his thoughts aloud, as if he was the only one in a room or will randomly over-react to a situation without much reason behind it. Even more, his tones can change from somber to energetic to accusatory depending on reactions from those he might be speaking too at the time. Yet, Cain hasn't all changed and there still sits a kind hearted individual who can be quite gentle, as well as the stoic defender he was trained to be.
Cain enjoys foods and snacks that are very sweet, be it simple pastries, candy, or complex desserts of all types, and tends to try to have something sweet with him to snack on if there is ever a lull in the action. This is one of the few things that has really stayed with him from his youth in Neverland. Even after everything he has been through, Cain is still very adamant about protecting those in need, often time without much regard to his own safety depending on the situation. Mostly, though, Cain has a soft spot for children in danger, remembering his own youth as a Lost Boy and how he would protect them. Out of everything though, Cain still seeks adventure and if an opportunity arises to explore something he has never seen before comes up, he will find it hard to turn the opportunity down.
As a former Lost Boy and resident of Neverland Cain has a natural distrust of Pirates of all walks of life, seeing them as allies to the enemies that he had encountered during his youth. Of course, he can't always tell someone is a pirate by sight, but he might make a guess and be suspicious of people he thinks might be one. What's more, part of Cain is a little distrustful and spiteful toward other Keybladers he might encounter, blaming others who can wield the weapon for the centuries he had lived imprison for not finding or freeing him. Worse of all, Cain hates areas of pure darkness and being in the dark, as the memories of his imprisonment is still very fresh in his mind. It is a fear that reaches the level of crippling, making it difficult for him to concentrate on his strengths and hampers his ability to use his skills until he has some sort of light.
History:
Cain was just one of the Boys. One of the Lost Boys, that is. Spending time in Neverland, never growing up, playing games, hunting animals, eating imaginary food, and fighting pirates. Everything was fun and dandy and Cain was always about protecting the others while they played, using a wooden shield and a small wooden dagger as his weapons of choice, but rarely using the wooden dagger as he preferred using the shield. This was everything he had ever known, as far as he could remember, but things changed when a stranger arrived on the island. The other Lost Boys ran off but Cain was drawn toward the stranger, seeing an adventure different from what he had ever experienced before and the stranger seemed to sense something about Cain and offered to him a strange looking weapon that Cain happily grabbed. It was heavy but Cain felt something different about it, and something felt different about him.
The Stranger was quite pleased with this, and offered to take Cain out on an adventure he had never before experienced, more exciting then hunting and fighting pirates, but only if Cain was willing to put in the effort. The Stranger, however, explained that Cain didn't need to answer just yet, but that the Stranger would return one day and offer the chance for adventure once again. Thus, the waiting began and Cain started to notice how slow life really was with the Lost Boys. All the 'adventure' and 'fun' that had originally captivated Cain was beginning to feel boring and uneventful. But the Stranger promised that he would return, and Cain waited. Days went by, and Days turned into weeks, and Weeks into Months, and Cain waited, counting each day and feeling that his life here with the others was wasting his life.
6 Months later, the Stranger appeared once again, this time accompanied by another youth, a boy who Cain thought might of been around his age, but there was something strange about him. The other boy appeared... different from the Lost Boys that Cain had known, and he could not figure out what about the other boy that made him feel he was strange. The Stranger approached Cain and reached out his hand and asked if Cain wanted to go with him, and Cain grabbed the Stranger's hand and agreed completely. The Stranger went on to explain that if Cain went with, that Cain had to follow every rule and command that the Stranger would set for him, and that it wouldn't be an easy journey. Cain once more agreed completely and the other boy let out a scoff and kicked the dirt, but the Stranger payed him no mind and simply grinned at Cain, before telling both of the kids to take their hand so they can leave.
The trip was so fast and so strange that Cain didn't even notice when they had stopped, and as he looked around dumb-founded, the Stranger began to walk forward, leaving the two boys standing there for a moment before they looked back and commanded that the two of them follow. Cain followed behind the two of them, staring all around the new area that they arrived at and he was speechless, but his heart was pounding and he could not believe it. It was somewhere he had never seen before! There were people in clothes he had never seen before! There were smells and sounds that were so new to him! And then they arrived at a large building that the three of them entered and the Stranger led Cain and the other boy into a hallway with several rooms and directed the two boys into an empty one.
This would be their room while they learned how to properly wield a keyblade, and that until they were older that the two of would be roommates and need to take care of the other. The Stranger went on to say that the two of them still had once more test to to take, something more like a journey within themselves to see just how they would manage. With their room claimed and what little that they brought with them stored on the respective beds, the two were led once more by the Stranger to a strange room with a large stain-glass window pouring a weird light into the room itself. Before Cain or the other kid could ask any questions the door of the room was shut and they heard the Stranger call out that they would return in a few hours, after the trial was over.
The two boys explored around the room, looking over and around before sitting on opposite sides of the room, not really looking at each other, but stealing an occasional glance. Finally, Cain spoke up and introduced himself, and the other boy looked at him silently for a while before finally giving his name. Leda, and Cain would give his roommate a smile and offer to be his friend, in which Leda refused, saying that he was only here to get stronger. Silence would fall on the room again and soon Cain found himself getting tired, only to notice that Leda had already fallen asleep, and soon he would follow into a deep slumber of his own.
Where... was he? Cain felt weightless as he tried to collect his thoughts before he finally felt as if he was falling downward. He couldn't really understand what was happening, but there was a calm in his heart he had never really felt before. Looking downward he could see a large platform coming toward him and he did not really even focus on it until his feet met the surface. Bright colors appeared on the platform but he couldn't really make out what it was, but it reminded him of the window from the room. Before him, three platforms appeared with three different items, a weird stick, a strange sword, and an interesting shield. A voice seemed to echo in his head, asking which he'd choose, and Cain felt compelled to walk forward before he reached out and grabbed the shield in almost a daze, looking over the design on the shield before grabbing the handle.
The voice came once more, and asked which he would give up and Cain looked between the other two, before pointing at the stick, watching as it vanished before the platform with the sword sunk into the ground, shattering the platform and causing him to fall through the darkness once more before arriving at another platform. Weird creatures appeared, and charged at Cain without warning, causing the youth to swing the shield in a panic at the first one, causing it to vanish into a puff. Seeing that this worked, he went about doing the same to the other creatures before they were gone, and the youth collapsed and took a moment to catch his breath, before he was once again falling, no shield, no light, just darkness until he felt a sudden jolt.
He was once more in the room with the stained glass window, and Leda was standing over him, a confused look on his face as he shook Cain awake. Before anything was said, the Stranger burst into the room and clapped his hands, congratulating the two boys for completing the trial, the Dive to the Heart, as he put it. Not his term but one that was semi-accepted in more circles to say the least. The Stranger explained that what they had experienced was awakening their inner selves in order to bring forth their own unique keyblades when the time was right, and that they were now officially Apprentices. It was then that the Stranger cast off their cloak and revealed herself to them, and introduced herself as Eveline. She went on to explain that they would have a feast welcoming them tonight, and that the real training would begin the following day.
Over the next 16 years Cain and Leda trained underneath the tutelage of Eveline, learning about the different worlds, about the light, Kingdom Hearts, the Keyblade War, the 6 Masters and more as she trained them in the way of using the keyblade to it's fullest. As the two youths grew, they grew close and became close friends and for years they would spar against each other, work together to cover each other's weaknesses, Cain the Defensive Fighter, and Leda the Mage Warrior. More often than not they would meet with students of other Masters and spar against them, and push the other to even higher heights. However, it soon became clear that Leda was growing at a slightly faster pace than Cain, and soon would begin seeing his friend as more of a burden than asset, and jealousy would grow as Eveline spent more time with Cain than Leda in training.
While his growth was a little slower, his morals and ideas were strong and his heart was pure. Cain wanted the strength to protect all the worlds and keep the Darkness at bay, and these ideals was exactly what Eveline wanted to instill upon her two students, often leading to her praising Cain over Leda. During their final exam, the Mark of Mastery, Cain and Leda were set to fight against each other, using their own keyblades in order to prove their skills and mastery over their own hearts, and thus the two clashed. The battle was, to say the least, very flashy as Leda used spell after spell to put pressure upon Cain, though Cain was able to hold his own through the use of his defensive abilities. During the exam, Cain transformed his keyblade into a large shield and began to return pressure upon Leda until finally, the Mage cast a spell that was strong enough to break through Cain's defense and send him flying back.
While their fight had ended with Leda as the victor, Eveline promoted both of her students into true Masters, and a celebration was had. While all were pleased with the results, Leda did not agree with Cain achieving the Rank of Master as well, claiming that Leda was weaker, but Eveline expressed that there was more to being a Master than just strength, chiding Leda's behavior, embarrassing the Mage. For Months, it seemed as if all was well between the three and Cain approached his Master with a single request; He wanted to visit Neverland again, just for a little while, to see how far he had come. Eveline agreed and Cain said his goodbyes to Eveline and Leda, unaware that it would be for the last time...
While his visit to Neverland was supposed to be a simple one, filled with nothing but memories of the past, it would soon become a nightmare he would never forget. Within a few hours of arriving, Cain found himself trapped and imprisoned, unable to move more than a foot in any direction, nothing but damp darkness surrounding him. Stone surrounded him, and no matter how much he tried he could not call forth his keyblade. His cries for help were muted, and his strength useless with so little room to move. Cain had no idea how he had gotten here, he had no idea where here even was, and as he tried to free himself, he only found a small hole in the floor of flowing water.
As the years dragged on, Cain managed to keep himself alive barely, unable to do nothing more than to go over the teachings that his Master instilled upon him, but even those began to weaken and become harder to correctly remember. Soon, a thought about an Eye started to roll through his head, that he was being watched by an Eye and that it would never stop. Cain's mind began to doubt and even twist up his thoughts and eventually Cain KNEW that the Eye that was watching him, he KNEW it was his own Eye! Of course it was! How could it not?! In the pitch black Darkness of the Cave, Cain removed his own eye and destroyed it, feeling relief knowing that he was no longer being watched.
As the years continued, Cain began to return to his senses and began to wonder just how long he had been trapped, how long he had been imprisoned in his home world, never aging, never changing. The old teachings were remembered and he began to use them to help keep his mind grounded, his thoughts in control until one day, and explosion rocked his little prison and it began to crack and Cain saw it for the first time in who knows how long... Light. Finally there was Light and Cain knew now was his best chance. The keyblader began to strike at the wall of the cave with his fists, each strike causing very little, almost zero, damage to the cave and as the sun began to set, a panic filled his mind.
With a loud cry of panic and desperation, Cain raised one of his fists and fell to his knee, slamming his fist into the ground and shattering the small cave enough for him to be free. As he passed out, he felt the ground beneath him give way into the stream that was beneath his prison, the current pulling him along. When Cain next awoke, he was laying on what he could only describe as a bed of wet plants as a woman cared for him and gave him fresh water. He'd soon learn that the Mermaids had found him floating in the ocean, and had taken him back to their grotto were they had been caring for him. Cain spent the next few weeks under their care, glad that the normally mischievous mermaids were treating him kindly, remembering them from his youth.
When he finally revealed who he was, one of the mermaids spoke something that shook Cain to his core... she hadn't seen him in over 400 years.
For 400 years Cain had been trapped within the tiny cave, hidden from view and unable to escape from the darkness. His mind floated to his Master and his friend, and he knew that they were both gone now, that there was no way the two of them could have lived that long. A sense of panic ran through him and he tried to summon his keyblade, but nothing came. He tried and tried and tried again until he finally collapsed in his despair, fearing he had lost the ability forever and that he was no more than a husk of who he once was. For another week he stayed with the mermaids in their care until a group of weird, black creatures came at the group of them. To give the Mermaids time to escape, Cain stood in the path of the creatures, feeling the sting of their claws and teeth as he tried his best to fend them off.
Just when he felt himself almost over-run, a familiar warmth rushed through his body and he pulled forth his keyblade, the large shield he knew like the back of his hand, and he turned the tides on the creatures, destroying them after a brief battle. When the Mermaids returned, they called the black creatures Heartless, beings of Darkness attacking the worlds, and Cain knew something was terribly wrong. Thanking the Mermaids and promising he'd return, Cain left Neverland and began searching for where he was trained, finding nothing but the emptiness of the Gummi Space.
Physical Description:
Standing at a little under 6 feet, Cain doesn't appear to be the most imposing person at first glance, for his body isn't over built with muscles nor does he tower above most people. Cain has long, wavy brown hair that is normally slicked back and normally in a ponytail that reaches a little above his middle back. His eye is a brilliant emerald color that sparkles like the gem itself in certain lights. Over his other eye he has a dark eye-patch with a purple X on it with a brown topping around it. Cain also has a small bit of facial hair, a small goatee that he tends to keep well groomed. He has a slightly mischievous looking face, which could also appear to be mature and friendly depending on his expressions.
Outfit wise, Cain wears brown compression sleeveless shirt that has thicker material that wraps around his torso from rib to rib. Over said shirt, he wears a light brown bit of leather armor over his shoulders and chest that has a fur collar and a leather strap that keeps it closed with a purple buckle and a keyhole shape. Why was it still so dark?
Cain sat on the bed in the inn room, the blanket kicked to the foot of the bed and his arms wrapped around his knees as he looked at the small candle on the nightstand. He was sure that the candle would have been more than enough to keep the room from getting too dark, but if he tried to look even a little bit away from the candle... Cain felt a shiver run through his body and he pulled his knees closer to his chest and breathed heavily, before panicking as the candle flickered even more from his breath. Covering his mouth and closing his eye tight, there was some relief as he could still see the candle light through his eyelid.
Opening his eye a little bit, Cain glazed at the candle light for a little bit longer before he let out a sigh and got to his feet, walking over to the entrance of his room and turning on the light, feeling relief as not a trace of the dark was left in the room. Rubbing his cheek and taking a deep breath, he shook his head and let out a sigh and walked over to the bathroom and turning on the sink, splashing his face with cold water in hopes to calm himself down. Looking at his reflection, Cain stood there silent for a few moments before he stuck his tongue out at his own face, seeing it doing the same at him.
So, that's how he wanted to play it eh? Fine! Two could play at this game! Cain took both hands and pulled down on his eye lids while looking up, putting his top teeth over his bottom lip and making a face. The Nerve! How about... this! Cain would use a finger to push up his nose wiggle his tongue at his reflection, before seeing the shocked face looking back. Ha! He won! But next time, he won't be so lucky! Stopping his little antics and blinking at the reflection once again, Cain gave himself another splash of cold water before making his way back into his room and walking over to the window. He pulled the curtain back and looked out over the back alleyway and he shook his head in disbelief.
He came here thinking that it would be a good place to regain himself and gather his thoughts, but he did not think that it would, for no reason, be perpetually nighttime. Traverse Town did live up to it's name in terms of all the people coming and going, but no one warned him that it would be dark all the time. True, there was a lot of lights all over the town so it did keep the dark at bay for now, but when he was trying to decide between Twilight Town and Traverse Town, he thought the place not named after darkness was the better choice. He had a couple more nights at the inn, so he wasn't rushing to leave the town right away, but he really wished that he could see the sun again...
Maybe Twilight Town would be a better place to make a base.
