Ardyn "Izunia" Lucis Caelum
Over 2000 years old
The True First King of Lucis and Chancellor to the Empire of Niflhiem
Somnus (Brother), Regis (Descendant), Noctis (Descendant)
Ardyn was considered kind at one point in time. He would be considered selfless, helped the people over himself, and a savior of mankind. It was what was lead to him becoming chosen to be the first king of the Lucis. Ardyn had made the ultimate sacrifice of healing millions of starscourge by absorbing the darkness into his own body, becoming the host of a myriad of daemons. However his entire being would shatter when the crystal had denied him after being chosen and his brother demonized him. Once he was cast aside, imprisoned, and wiped from history by those who had revered him, Ardyn would then harbor a lust for revenge against the Gods, the Crystal and the Lucian bloodline.
The true first king does not show his emotions outright, but he is far from emotionless. Ardyn is theatrical in his mannerisms and speech, always using some sort of grandiose hand gesture to go with what he is saying. He's quite adapt at learning other people's mannerisms as well, which makes his deceit and disguises more believable. He is also a very confident person- not only being able to read a room but to be tenacious enough to turn it into his favor. His charisma always benefited him. The Accursed is also quite nonchalant and laid-back in his actions and words. Typically he takes joy in his own mannerisms and knows he can be a bit eccentric and over-the-top, which makes it all the more enjoyable. If it's not fun, then why bother? He can also be quite cryptic when he needs to be, always seeming like he knows something or has something in mind.
Ever since he was ousted and executed by everything and everyone he believed in, he became quite bitter internally. While he does not hate Noctis just for existing, he does have a seething rage against the entire Lucian bloodline for betraying him. There would be nothing more satisfying than ending his own bloodline, eradicating the Gods, destroying the crystal, and curing his own immortality. However that bitterness had boiled and festered the once benevolent king into a mindset of twisted evil. He has no issues turning others into daemons, unleashing more of the starscourge across the planet to plunge it into darkness, and even offering his extensive knowledge into creating foul experiments that would defy the natural order of the gods. Ardyn takes some level of joy in taunting others, using their own personality flaws against them.
Over two thousand years ago Ardyn was a kind and generous man. He was chosen by the Crystal to be King and gifted by the gods to heal the denizens of Eos of the Starscourge. The Starscourge was a wicked illness brought onto mankind thanks to the Meteor summoned to the earth by Ifrit the Infernian. It had turned man and beast alike into daemons and brought upon a longer night, in which the daemons could roam free. Ardyn had set out to use his newfound gift of the gods to create peace across the land and remove the blight that scoured the earth. When Ardyn would heal someone he would absorb the darkness into his own body, thus being able to save the poor unfortunate soul. He did this to thousands upon thousands of people and he was cheered and revered by most. However his brother Somnus had grown jealous of the peaceful to-be king.
When it was time for his ascension to the throne as the Chosen King of Lucis, he had touched the Crystal. However since his body had a myriad of demons inside of him, it denied him of his promised ascension. When he had touched the crystal he had a vision of three figures. Somnus had taken the opportunity to demonize and ostracize his brother Ardyn, and had him executed by his own people. He was also erased from history at that point, so no one could remember the Accursed being a Lucis Caelum. However due to the immense amount of Starscourge in his body, Ardyn was rendered immortal. Though he was locked away for millennia until he was released from his prison by a stranger.
Eventually Ardyn would align himself with the Empire of Niflheim, quickly rising to the rank of Chancellor due to his extensive knowledge about daemons and magic. Ardyn would help Niflheim rapidly build their army over the years due to this knowledge and it led into the creation of the Magitek Army, the Diamond Weapon, and helped Verstael with his research. However Ardyn had done all this not for land, power, or money. He wanted to get as close to the Lucian Empire as possible to start his two thousand year revenge.
First - after what was considered a "strategic retreat", Ardyn had presented himself to King Regis to make an offer. A peace treaty between Insomnia and the Empire if they would surrender all their land to them. One of the conditions was that Noctis and Luna were to be wed. He had done this to keep both the Chosen King and the Oracle out of Insomnia when the Empire would betray the deal. It would also eventually lead to the crystal being in the Empire's possession, as well as his own.
Second - Once Insomnia fell, Ardyn would then help guide Noctis and his friends through their journey. He had first met them at the Galdin Quay and let them know that the ferry to Altissia was out. Eventually he would meet up with them again at Lestallum, offering them a caravan to Titan. After that debacle he had rescued them from that volcanic area, also revealing to them at that point that he was aligned with the Empire. However he couldn't do anything about their car and told them where to go find it. Once again the chancellor appeared to the party's aid, to stop Ravus' attack. Afterwards he helped them access Vesperpool so that they could get the mythril to complete their journey to Altissia.
Sometime after, he and Ravus had left for Altissia. They had shared a conversation before Luna had summoned Leviathan. After the Hydraean was summoned, Ardyn had killed Luna in front of Noctis. She had tried to heal him and in that moment he had felt a brief passing of peace, before slapping Luna to the ground and leaving the immediate area on a Magitek Engine. Later on Ardyn disguises himself as Gladiolus when he approached Ignis and Ravus in the same area. However Ravus had seen through his disguise and had attacked him, which prompted to reveal himself. He had blasted Ravus away with Darkness while the Magitek Army held down Ignis. He had offered Ignis to join him, but he had refused and put on the Ring of the Lucii to try to stop Ardyn. He had put up a good fight, but it wasn't enough for Ardyn to draw out his true powers. He had left when the Rings power had run out and blinded Ignis. Since the Oracle was no longer alive, it allowed Ardyn to spread more of the Starscourge.
He then appears on the train ride to Gralea. He hypnotized Noctis to make him believe Prompto had looked like Ardyn, and Ardyn disguised himself to look and act like Prompto. While disguised as Prompto he had helped Noctis defend the train from the Magitek Army. Eventually it lead to Noctis knocking the real Prompto off of the train as it still headed toward their destination. By this time Ardyn was in full control of the Empire, while the Emperor was being turned into a Daemon from his magic. Later on as the train approached Ghorovas Rift, Ardyn had appeared once more to keep pushing Noctis toward making his pacts with the gods. Despite the absolute freezing cold and brutal winds of the Glacian, Ardyn was still able to talk to Noctis without being phased and reminisced with Shiva on the day the Empire killed her larger form. However Shiva had frozen him completely solid. After Noctis' pact with the goddess, he broke his frozen body into pieces. However Ardyn had simply recovered due to his immortality and told him to go to Gralea to find Prompto. It was also where the Crystal was. A little bit before this, Ardyn had "directed" Prompto at the first Magitek facility in the arctic. He would tell him to seek out Verstael and mocked Prompto when he had killed his own "father."
Over in Gralea, Ardyn spoke to Noctis over the intercoms at the base. During the course of this time he would taunt Noctis during his venture, but also help him and his friends reunite. He had also disguised himself as Noctis at one point and killed Ravus with one of his swords. After this he had turned Ravus and the Emperor into daemons so they could fight Noctis and his friends. It was a clever ruse used to split up Noctis and his friends so that he could be forced to enter the Crystal alone. When Noctis was being absorbed into the Crystal, Ardyn had revealed his true self: Ardyn Lucis Caelum. He told him of his tragic tale and for Noctis to find him when he awakens. After Noctis was fully submerged into the Crystal he was set to leave. Noctis' friends tried to stop him, but he shrugged off the blows and bid them adieu. After Gralea, Ardyn spread the Starscourge more and more until the night was never ending. For over 10 years he would let the Starscourge create more and more daemons, so that he could absorb them into his own body to match the power of the Crystal.
He meets the heroes at their journeys end in Insomnia. Ardyn greeted them with some comets, acting as fireworks, before erecting the Wall around the Citadel. He would then wait inside until they broke down the Wall. Once more he would meet the heroes at the steps to the Citadel, turning a daemonized Ifrit onto Noctis and friends. He would await them once more in the throne room while Noctis dealt with three daemonized Kings of Lucis. One of them was his own brother - Somnus, the Mystic. In the throne room he had the bodies of Regis, the Emperor, Ravus, and Nyx all hanging from the ceiling like some sort of symbolism that he was waiting a long time for Noctis. Before the final battle started, Ardyn had used his darkness to knock out Noctis' friends so that he could face the Chosen King alone. It was a fierce battle against Noctis and a lot of words were exchanged. Ardyn had told him about his plan and how 10 years was nothing to him. He would continue to taunt Noctis that the Crystal was just using him.
In the end it was a war of attrition. Both Noctis and Ardyn were wiped out from their flying battle. The final strikes went through all the Royal Arms. Ardyn was losing his sanity and composure, getting angrier with each strike until the final hit: Noctis stabbing Ardyn with the Sword of the Father. He would lay on the ground, stating that it was over. Ardyn asked what Noctis would do? Banish the Daemons? Erase him from history again? When Noctis responded that he could rest in peace, forevermore, Ardyn had smiled and said he would wait for Noctis in the beyond. Ardyn would have his final reunion with Noctis in the beyond, he had reached out toward the King and Luna had held him back. The Kings of Lucis would all lend Noctis their strength and hit Ardyn with everything until his spirit disappeared. His revenge was finally complete and he could finally rest in peace.~Alternate Timeline History~
In another timeline, Ardyn invited Ignis to go to Zegnautus Keep with him. Ignis had accepted and Ardyn brought him there, telling him it's where the crystal resided and if he wanted any answers he should seek them out on his own. When Ignis had approached the crystal, Ardyn appeared in his daemon form with miasma seeping out of his body and surrounding the entire room. He returned to his regular form when he summoned the Royal Arms and introduced himself as Ardyn Lucis Caelum. Ignis had thought he was the founder king, but Ardyn corrected him and told him that it was his brother. He then asked Ignis to call him "your majesty" since he was never made king, but Ignis refused. Ardyn would then cause a barrage of hundreds of Royal Arms to destroy the crystal housing chamber and the immediate area, knocking out Ignis in the process. When Ignis awoke, he told him the rest of his plan. That he wanted to punish the Crystal for picking Somnus over him. Ignis would dodge his killing blow and pull out the Ring of the Lucii, which surprised Ardyn.
He taunted Ignis when he had put the ring on, telling him not to hurt himself. A great battle was fought between Ignis and Ardyn, with Ignis coming out as the victor. Ardyn had said that his plans may had eluded him for the time being, but he would have his revenge. He would then dissipate into Darkness. Ardyn did not die, but he would lay dormant for awhile as the Starscourge spread across the land. He would once again appear in the Citadel in his daemon form and wait for Noctis and his friends for one final battle. The conclusion was unknown, but somehow Noctis was able to vanquish Ardyn without needing to give up his life.~Episode Ardyn: Prologue~To be added upon the anime release in February.~Episode Ardyn~To be added upon the DLC release in March.
Human Form: Demon "Form:"
"For a moment I felt death's chill wind, such is the might of the gods. But then, I remembered I'm immortal. Such is my blessing and curse. Your attack hurt me, nevertheless… My feelings at least."
"You think 10 years is a long time!? It is nothing to me! I have lived in darkness for ages!"
"In the dark, you would know peace."
Darkness. There was nothing but Darkness. Every corner, every step, it was everywhere. It was a feeling that was very familiar to Ardyn. The Accursed had found himself on the beach in the Realm of Darkness. The only thing illuminating the area was a moon perched above the seemingly endless dark ocean in front of him. The rocks around him were glowing a faint purple color, even the one he was sitting on. "This is good, isn't it?" Ardyn said out loud. It's not like anyone was around to hear him anyway. There was a solemn look on his face as he contemplated his situation. It typically wasn't like Ardyn to be as serious as he was. He had potentially gotten his revenge against his own bloodline and removed the gods and the Crystal from the world, but here he was. Was it not enough to eradicate the gods, was his revenge just a facade? Or did he have some sort of higher purpose?
Could he have been granted a second chance by fate? Would it be terribly ironic if it was the Crystal that gave him a second chance? He scoffed at the idea. The gods and their Crystal had abandoned him in the past, why would they ever help him? The solitude somewhat reminded him of his time imprisoned in Angelgard for thousands of years. Maybe he was actually dead and this was his Hell, or would he consider this his Heaven? Regardless, it didn't bother him. He had no reason to repent, all of his actions were justified. The gods and Crystal betrayed him, so did his people, and ultimately his brother. As Ardyn was looking out toward the water, some dark creatures had formed on the beach. They were jet black with yellow eyes. The Accursed looked over to them and he had gotten up slowly, not knowing they were the Heartless. The Shadows bounced around for a little bit and their antenna's wiggled.
"Curious little fellows aren't you? You're not like other daemons I've seen." Ardyn spoke out to the mindless beasts, not expecting a reply in the first place. He knew they weren't daemons, but they also weren't something that he recognized. However it didn't seem like the creatures were apt to attack him. Was his own Darkness protecting him from the creatures somehow? Though he pondered something. He lifted his left hand up and faced it toward the Shadows. Darkness covered his entire hand and it encroached its way to the Heartless. Ardyn's darkness had entangled the Heartless and they slowly got absorbed into his body until there was nothing left. The Darkness disappeared from his hand. His eyes had become a bright yellow for a moment with black sclera, temporarily showing his demon form before it subsided. Ardyn didn't feel any different, but of course they were lesser creatures and he had already spent ten years amassing daemons into his body.
He would then tip his hat using the same hand that he had used to absorb the Heartless and do a slight bow. "Why thank you for your service gentlemen." Ardyn smiled again before straightening up again, snapping out of his serious funk. While it may have been his curse to be immortal, it never felt better being alive! That is to say, if his revenge was truly complete, he could rule over his own kingdom uncontested. What a glorious day indeed.
