"Sora, you never did change," was all that slipped out of her mouth, in a more exasperated manner. A silence lingered in the air for a moment before she broke out into a fit of giggles, her hands flying from her hips to her mouth in a poor attempt to stifle them.
The boy was snoozing in the sand once again, as though nothing had happened at all, that life on Destiny Islands had been as per normal. She could only imagine how hard it was for the vulnerable residents of their quaint little island to have gotten tossed through a dark portal. Who knows where they had shot out of?
Who knows where her grandmother had ended up?
Kairi remembered that when she first washed up on the island, the first person who had greeted at on the shores was none other than Sora. Within the next few days, she had been accepted and welcomed, as though she belonged with them in the first place. Back at the point of time, the girl had lost the memories of her previous home, about where she came from and she, too, had lost memories of who had been in her life prior to Destiny Islands.
The girl nudged Sora's side with the tip of her shoe. When he didn't react, a cheeky grin spread across her face. She bent down to gently grab him his ankles and forcefully dragged him down to the shore, where the waves kissed the sandy edges of the islands.
Once her mission was completed, she dusted her hands of whatever sand that was left. It was a job well done, Kairi concluded. TAGGED // @sora NOTES // There you go.

"Gotta clear my head of anger and greed." Dreams faded like embers drifting, replaced by the glow of a pacific sun and wiped clean by the slate of a familiar voice. Sora stirred as her hands wrapped like vices around his ankles and began to tug. For one, incredulous second, Sora was pretty sure that Xehanort had taken the form of one of his best friends and decided that drowning him was the absolute best way to get rid of him. He thrashed as she dragged him into the water, blue eyes latching quickly onto a floret of pink-red hair that identified his would-be drowner. It really was a tragedy that his best friend was trying to drown him in the ocean, but as he coughed and sputtered and rolled over, accidentally shoving his face deeper into the water, he found that he was totally cool with it.
"Pfft," he coughed, pushing himself up and relishing the warmth of the water as it overtook his wrists. Realistically, he hadn't been four inches deep in the water. Shaking his head and unable to shake the smile from his face, Sora clambered to his feet, dusting free the thick smattering of sand that now covered his clothes.
"Man, what a way to greet a friend," he said, still patting himself off. When had Kairi gotten that strong? When had she gotten that tall, actually, and when had her shoulders straightened out to the point that she looked so much more resilient than before? "And after it's been such a long time, too. That's so rude. Riku would never..."
Sora trailed off a second, pursing his lips with a knuckle. Riku would've probably thrown him outright into the ocean. At least Kairi had the faux-dignity to let him off with a tidal warning. Thumbing the bridge of his nose, he dismissed his chide with a laugh.
"Ah, nevermind. Hey, wait, it's so good to see you! I was gonna come find you, but, uh..."
Sora rubbed bashfully at the back of his head, his typical, wide grin spread clear from cheek to cheek. He'd fallen asleep while waiting for the morning to come, too enthralled with the semblance of home to stay awake through the night. Really, he should've just gone to find her, but... well, he hadn't thought about it and saying that now sounded kinda dumb so he left it out.
"It's not important," he concluded, reaching out to muss her hair with a wet, sandy hand. "I figured it's been a while, so I guess I owed ya some conversation, huh? We really don't get all that much time to talk while we're training and stuff, and I thought I'd find you here."

"Riku would never? That's hard to believe," Kairi asked, giving Sora a look that said otherwise. She had known her two friends for far too long; it was almost impossible to say that Riku would not do the same to him. Even though they had grown, there were just some things that never changed, much to Kairi's pleasure. The moment Sora could not quite finish his sentence, she found herself grinning at the fact that he realised.
It became apparent that finishing school was going to be held off for a little longer, not when the world needed Sora. Kairi had a feeling that they'd need him for as long as they could. Education was just a far-off plan that required some time for him to think about it. If anything, helping out people would always be the first thing on his mind.
"We haven't. It's a miracle Yen Sid even gave me some time off," Kairi said, settling down on the ground next to one of her best friends. "Riku and you... you guys don't work together much, do you? You guys are never in the same place at the same time, I heard." TAGGED // @sora NOTES // There you go. Sorry for the late reply.

"Gotta clear my head of anger and greed." Sora couldn't say she was wrong. Lately, he'd been stretched a little thin. It wasn't a bad thing! No, he kinda liked being busy. It was a good way to feel useful, especially since he'd failed the Mark of Mastery exam. The only downside was that he really didn't get to see his friends as much as he would have liked. It was sort of a double edged sword, but he figured that it didn't matter all that much in the end. He and Riku were best buds. Even if they couldn't spend every waking moment together, they'd still find their peace in the moments between. It was a lot like how he saw his friendship with Kairi; they were all there for each other, whether they were there physically or not.
"That sounds right," Sora answered, as thoughtless as ever.
"We really don't get to spend a lot of time together anymore. That's alright, though."
He flashed Kairi a grin from the side and took a knee beside her. His gaze was back on the ocean a moment later, but his mind remained focused on the conversation at hand. Someone else probably could have explained what he wanted to say a little more eloquently, but he wasn't some wordsmith.
He was a kid from an island (that might've or might not've been most of its own planet) in the far reaches of a crazy galaxy. So was Riku, so was Kairi. It was the insanity of it all that kept them all together. Well, the insanity and the fact that they all genuinely loved each other to death.
"It just makes the moments we do spend together that much more special."
Only then did he finally collapse backward onto the sand again, plopping his butt down beside the girl who eternally lived in his top three.
"I'm sure he feels that way too. You gotta think it sometimes, right?"

"That's alright with me. The world needs you," Kairi told him, allowing the unspoken word of 'more' linger in the silence that had befallen between them. There are many worlds out there and they share the same sky — that was something the girl strongly believed in.
"So do other people. The innocent, the defenceless. Only the Keyblade has the ability to unlock those hearts and set them free," Kairi continued, remembering the explanation of the Keyblade's purpose, as told to her by Yen Sid once upon a time. "People like Yuffie, Leon... even if their weapons could help, it's mostly because they don't have any other option. They have no means to free the hearts of the ones oppressed by the darkness. Do you think the cycle will end someday? Will there be a day where all the darkness is eradicated?"
Moments like these with even one of her best friends was more than she could ever ask for. One day, she knew, there would be a need for all three of them to be together again. The world had a select few as Keyblade Warriors. It wasn't a power that could simply be distributed so freely. Proving it was one thing — not like she had anything to prove — and making sure that oneself did not fall into the darkness was a trying thing.
She had witnessed how Riku handled that. Her friend had turned his weakness into a strength but at a great cost: his identity, his own appearance. Kairi was glad that he had managed to get himself back to how he was before; she wasn't sure whether she could constantly look at the image of a man who had destroyed more than he built.
"Hey, have you been able to feel Roxas?" Kairi inquired, moving onto more pressing matters. "Or has he said anything about Naminé to you?" TAGGED // @sora NOTES // There you go. Sorry for the late reply.

"Gotta clear my head of anger and greed." Sora's typically jovial face fell into a more thoughtful expression when she asked if he thought there would ever be a day that their struggles came to an end. It wasn't exactly a softball, but it was a question he heard often. Asked by little boys and girls on distant stars, by mothers and fathers, by the dwellers of a valley great and dark, it was the sort of question that everyone hoped he held a perfect answer for. Maybe it was because of the light in his heart, or just the inability of those people to see the darkness lurking there beneath it that made them ask.
He never thought that Kairi would be counted in the number of people who dared ask it. Not because she was somehow above the others, not because she couldn't see him as he was (sometimes he thought she was one of two people that actually could), but because he figured she already knew his response. Smiling, Sora glanced out over to the horizon, relishing the sensation of the wind as it ruffled his hair like his father might've long ago.
"I don't know," he answered simply. "I'm sure things will be better one day. As long as there are people like you out there, I know they will be."
Did his friend know how much he admired her spirit? He still remembered the days spent racing Riku on the beach, weekends passed lazing about doing nothing. He remembered sparring his silver-haired companion while she watched, uninterested herself, or otherwise not-quite-competitive in her own way. They were both so far away from those lazy days now, and she had changed so...
Well, not so much. She was still Kairi. The darkness that separated them only revealed more of who she really was, and as Sora stared out over the horizon, he couldn't help but love her a little bit more for that realization.
Her next question was a little harder to answer.
"Huh? About Naminé?"
Sora didn't remember being spoken to about Naminé. Or, really, all that much in general. He'd been so busy that it was kinda hard to keep track, and Roxas liked doing his own thing sometimes, so... he really wasn't sure what to say. He knew mainly that Roxas liked her a lot, but that was sorta all.
"Did something happen?"

"If there were people like me," Kairi began, pausing for a mere moment. "The world would be in danger. The darkness will seek out those with abilities like me."
Even if Kairi might not admit it out loud, being a Princess of Heart meant that she had a great burden and with that burden came great responsibility. The risks of having a heart that was filled with light meant that they were equally vulnerable to being taken by the darkness. If their hearts were taken, their bodies were just empty vessels, open takings for the Heartless. If her body were to be taken into the Realm of Darkness, there was no way for her to come back as herself; she would need to remain hidden within the depths of someone else's heart.
In particular, Sora's would be preferable. Kairi remembered how being in his heart filled with her such warmth that she couldn't comprehend. If anything, he was so full of it that it overflowed and reflected in the way he devoted himself to every single soul he could help, no matter where they are.
So much kindness and yet, there were people out there willing to take advantage of that big heart, one Sora willing gave away so easily. Who else was capable of such an immeasurable amount of love?
Sora and, by extension, Roxas — Naminé reminded her that in spite of the amount of vehemence Roxas held within the depths of his heart, he was all but confused and searching for a place.
"A place to call home. That was something Naminé had told me before," Kairi shared with Sora, turning to him with all the bright-eyed determination she could muster. "Now, I can barely feel her. I was wondering whether you could sense anything off with Roxas as well. After all, both Naminé and I share the same bond as you and Roxas, do we not?" TAGGED // @sora NOTES // There you go. "Gotta clear my head of anger and greed." Sora kept his eyes trained on Kairi, struggling to find any sign of weakness or fragility in the woman that she had become. He thought he saw it, a flash of cynicism for just a moment, cross her face when she denied his claim. He shook his head, laughing, and gave her a light shove. She was so selfless that she probably thought having his heart would've been a better idea."That's not what I meant," he replied, "and you know it!"He couldn't stop the subtle laughter that cracked through his tone with every word. Despite the seriousness of their conversation, it was too easy to get lost in little bouts of joy and light. Kairi wasn't as serious as Riku, so he figured she wouldn't mind that. Or, if she did, she probably wouldn't scold him too hard for it.She knew that Sora had always been an easygoing boy, one willing to hit the wall as hard as he needed to when it really mattered. It was part of their dynamic that he stay the one goofing off or napping on the beach or getting lost in hedge mazes that neither of them remembered entering in the first place. The memories faded when Kairi turned to face him, replaced by the glow of her eyes and the hum of the present.Did he have the same connection with Roxas?"It's a little different for us," he admitted, looking thoughtful. "I know he's out there and I can sometimes feel things if it's really intense..."Sora paused a second, leaning back onto his arms. He wondered if Kairi's connection with her other was more meaningful than his with Roxas's... and then, like droplets streaking down a window pane, came to the sill of why."Roxas is me, but he's also a whole 'nother person. I told him once that I hope he gets a body of his own, so that he can do his own thing... so maybe this is part of that, and it's finally coming true." Only Sora could think of something so optimistic."Do you think they might be in some kinda trouble?"

"I'm certain Naminé is. I believe your other can handle himself," was all Kairi said before gazing upon her friend with a wistful smile. For the past two to three years, her best friends were off adventuring around the world, doing things that they could have never imagined doing in the years. Riku had changed but Sora hadn't.
Even Kairi herself had changed, both physically and mentally. Emotionally? Not quite. Had it not been for Riku presenting her with Destiny's Embrace, she might have potentially been injured in more ways than one.
Sora spoke of his and Roxas' connection being a tad bit different from how hers and Naminé's, although she could not say she was surprised. Between Naminé and Roxas, she got the sense that her other half was the less explosive one. Her connection with Naminé felt more gentle, less intense, but it was like a firm string connecting the two of them together.
"Their hearts are connected too," she said, tapping her own heart and then moving to Sora's to tap his. "I want them to have their own bodies too. If you can still feel Roxas, that's good. That means he's still there."
She hummed as she allowed herself to be taken away by her thoughts, like how the waves were lapping at the sandy shores of the island.
"If you were to call out to Roxas, would he respond to you?" TAGGED // @sora NOTES // There you go.
