Red-Headed Man, Scarlet Hair, The Salamander, Bandit King
Amarant is a prideful, headstrong and honorable fighter. Arrogance seems to be his dominant trait, challenging powerful opponents in one-on-one combat for no other reason than to prove himself superior. He tends to rub his victories in the faces of those he bests, a sure way to establish his dominance above those who would challenge him. However, Amarant possesses a moral code and does not tolerate those that would break it, allies or enemies. No hostages, no underhanded techniques. He is a man of honor and anyone who possesses none or acts as such earns nothing but contempt from the red-headed man. So much so, in fact, he will immediately turn on them, considering them, at best, scum and, at worst, enemies.
He's cold and reclusive, keeping his personal information to himself for the most part. He will often brush off those that would get to know him fore he cares not for bonding with random folks. Only through fighting together and watching them closely will he begin to open up.
He also is a tad naive, seemingly confused by the larger purposes of kinder actions. Sparing a foe, stopping to comfort a child, these things leave him frustrated and perplexed. He's very in the moment, sometimes even tunnel-visioned, often missing the bigger picture of things. However, this also catches his interest, encouraging him to follow the trail of those that would.
Not much is known about the man's past but from what he's shared, Amarant was once a guard in the rich, vice-filled city of Treno. On his shift, a young monkey-esk boy stole something from his post, alerting the Salamander and causing him to give chase! Despite his best efforts, however, the thief managed to allude him and frame him for the theft instead! This made him a wanted man, forcing him from his position as a guard and condemning him to the life of an outlaw/sell-sword.
His life on the run would come to an end several years later as he was invited by the former queen of Alexandria, Brahne, as her guest alongside Lani, a former bounty-hunter to propose a mission: Kill Vivi to cover-up the secrets of Black mages and steal the Princess Garnet's pendant! Amarant had been keeping tabs on these folks, however and knew that now was his time to obtain revenge... revenge against the thief who stole his life from him. He asked to kill Zidane who traveled with his other two targets, to which the Queen agreed...
Tracking down the party to Madain Sari, Amarant abandons Lani the moment she takes a young, horned child hostage to get what they want, threatening her very life for having done something so underhanded! Having chased Lani off, Amarant turns his sights on Zidane whom engages him in single combat, much to Amarant's surprise and pleasure. After a lengthy and close game of cat-and-mouse, the younger of the two remains victorious, leaving the mercenary vulnerable, demanding for the thief to "finish him". When Zidane spared him, Amarant was awash with confusion and disgrace, subtly tailing the thief out of curiosity to find out what made him so powerful. Eventually, the two came into contact so often, the red-headed man officially joins Zidane's band of heroes, though he remains emotionally distant from all of them save one:
Amarant and Freya: Rivalry between warriors. Amarant challenged her to a fight the moment they met, recognizing her as a worthy rival. Granted, they were stopped by Zidane before the battle had begun but since then, he awaited the day he could challenge the Dragoon. The two have a mutual respect for one another and to she alone does he fully reveal his past. He trusts her to maintain her honor, a closer bond than any with the rest of the party.
Amarant was among the few to witness the summoning of the great spirit Alexander, the killing of the Dragon-King Bahamut, barely managing to escape before the Invincible crushed Alexander himself!
Convinced that working alone was better than Team-work, Amarant left Zidane's company to find the clue that would lead Zidane to Kuja's homeworld, actually managing to find it before the thief himself! His success had left him overconfident, however, leading him into a trap from which the Genome had to dive back in to save him, much to his shame! Begrudgingly deciding to accept Zidane as an ally, Amarant returned the favor to the thief, joining with Freya to free Zidane from Garland's control! Innitially brushed off, the mercenary grew frustrated with the thief's behavior but he couldn't do much about it... He had to fight himself out of the Invincible!
Alongside the party, Amarant fought and defeated Necron and Kuja, leaving Amarant back on Gaia, without a job, confused but with all the memories of what had happened. Deciding to seek out his allies, the mercenary traveled about the land, gathering them together just in time for a familiar play being acted out by the Tantalus thief band...
After a short reunion with Zidane & friends, the scarlet warrior once again disappeared into the land, getting back to work with basic mercenary jobs. Stopping thieves here, defeating monsters there... It was when he was hired to hunt a strange hooded figure and learn their identity did the Red-headed man's life get thrown back into the center of it. With new, greater threats then he had faced in the past on the horizon, Amarant has to learn to work with others yet again to complete his mission, but moreover to defeat a greater evil!
Amarant is a tall, toned blue-skinned human standing at 7 feet 4 inches. His trademark scarlet hair is braided into thick, long dreadlocks appear constantly blown backwards, folding over his eyes and most of the upper part of his face. He has a long red beard that archs up his jaw-line and up his cheeks. He has large hoop earrings half-hidden by his hair, a large tattoo on his shoulder appearing to signify his former allegiance to the Treno guard, and a pair of belts around his arms. He wears a standard green tunic and pants, Green, long bracers that nearly cover his large hands and leather wrappings/boots. Amarant is a stoic figure in average life, often leaning against walls with his arms crossed but that doesn't stop him from getting in the faces of those he interacts with.
In combat, he leans over, almost hunched with his arms swinging softly, one at his side, the other in front of him. He carries various different weapons for his special techniques (most of them small and easily concealable) but his main tool he has on his belt are a pair of claws.
Face-claim: Amarant FF9 Amarant
"The only dependable thing is uncertainty."
"I'm not here to help. I just want it to be fair."
"I'd rather die as a warrior than live as a beggar."
"I don't work with hostage-taking scumbags. Now get lost."
"Damn hypocrite! Talking about friendship when you're nothing but a selfish loaner!"
"You're a real simpleton. Forget it, guys. There's no stopping this fool."
A scarlet haired landed deftly before a shorter black-hooded figure, stopping their sprint for freedom in it's tracks. Amarant had been tracking this person for weeks now, their seeming teleportation through portals of darkness consistently eluding him! Every time he had moved in on the attack, they would disappear in to their portal and their portal would before he could follow them in! A coward's tactic to flee from him at every confrontation but now he was between them and their portal. How he relished the completion of this job.
"Good luck running now." Amarant rumbled with a stoic, unchanging expression, the massive man hunching over, his front hand gleaming with the claws resting on his knuckles. "You've got nowhere to run too. Now fight!"
The mercenary's movments were so quick... so agile, he seemed to disappear into the faded after-image of his own speed, appearing to the right of the black-cloaked figure with his leg raised to slam the sole of his boot into their temple!
