How'd you find us?:
-Commander Fury Caraway (Father)
-Julia Heartily (Mother)
Rebellous: Rinoa shares her mother's sense of passion and adventure and her father's hunger for justice and action. This dangerous mix culminated into a passion for resistance against a powerful majority not just because rebellion gives Rinoa a way out of a sheltered (painfully boring) home and life, but because Rinoa holds value in some of life's smaller pictures. Pictures like wishing on a shooting star or wild life in its natural habitat or children happily playing in the streets; all things that go unnoticed or worse get driven away to make way for unneeded development by unwanted invasion. Rinoa's drive to stand for what she percieves as 'right' regardless of just how many might stand in her way seems to be almost boundless and she will face armies if she has to.
Pushy: Rinoa really doesn't take 'no' for an answer. Not from her father, not from her friends and certainly not from Squall. If she wants to talk, she will get someone to talk to her by insistence and if that isn't enough, annoyance. If she wants something done and no one is willing to help, she'll do it herself with hardly a moment's hesitation. It isn't exactly Rinoa's way or the highway but anyone can bet on that fact that doing or saying 'nothing' is just not gonna fly with her. Rinoa also doesn't hesitate for a moment to start arguing if she believes her view to be correct and it is very difficult to change her mind. In a lot of cases even life and death doesn't sway her.
Adventurous: Even through a rather brash and sometimes irritatingly combative person to deal with, there is a certain charm to Rinoa that those who are just as fierce manage to see in her. She seems to have an unwavering appreciation for beautiful sights, animals, children, really any of the wonders of the world that others tend to take for granted such as the feel of the breeze in her hair or the beauty of the night sky. She isn't the sort to be satisfied with a picture or a story, Rinoa needs to be there and live that adventure herself.
[[FF VIII SPOILERS WARNING]]
Rinoa was born March third to Commander Fury Caraway of Galbadia’s military and singer Julia Heartily. She was exposed to tragedy at the tender age of five years old when Julia was killed in a car accident. Rinoa and her father, unfortunately, grew apart steadily as the years went on following that. Growing up the child of a military commander, Rinoa was the product of expectation after expectation which amounted to a wealthy life but a sheltered one stuck indoors with hired tutoring presumably being the most interesting thing going on in her life at best. For such a spirited young lady, it was unbearable.
By the time she was sixteen, Rinoa managed to become an expert rebel. Sneaking out was an art of its own and one the girl was very good at. She found passion in resistance when she became a member of the Timber Owls, a small resistance group formed for the purpose of gaining back Independence for the small city-state Timber against the Galbadian Occupation. For someone as driven as Rinoa it was just the thing to spark a life within her and for her. The added bonus was that it was another thing to wedge between herself and everything commander Caraway was part of. Somewhere within that time of finding herself and her purpose, Rinoa claimed her mother’s maiden name and even entertained a brief romantic relationship with Seifer Almasy a cadet from Balamb Garden. Through him she learned what the SeeD’s offered services were and it occurred to her that such services could open provide more opportunities for the efforts of the Forest Owls to be at a much more serious level. She sent what felt like endless requests for the help of SeeD’s but to no avail.
Rinoa attended a SeeD inauguration ball at Balamb Garden as Seifer’s date, but found herself alone on the dance floor for a time. It didn’t upset her. She was quite taken with the view of the night sky that the Balamb Garden’s ballroom provided. Just after she spotted a shooting star, something she never took for granted, she met the gaze of a dark-haired SeeD. With a fearless smile, she approached him and asked for a dance. He was reluctant which she would learn was just who he was, but she wasn’t the sort to take ‘I can’t dance’ for an answer. She dragged him out onto the dance floor and at first he was uncertain and clunky in his movements but eventually, she was able to get him into the motions. For a moment there he even looked like he was enjoying himself. In his arms she watched the fireworks shoot up over the garden and when she finally glanced back down she found that Seifer had kept his promise to introduce her to headmaster Cid. She was given her chance to explain the situation of the Galbadian Army’s occupation in Timber, how much of the forest was destroyed to make way for their railways and train yards and just how small the resistance effort was that she had to work with. Cid agreed to send someone as soon as he could.
Sure enough, Cid kept good on that promise. In a matter of a few days, three SeeD’s were sent to assist with the Forest Owl’s resistance efforts. Rinoa was surprised to find that their squad leader Squall was none other than the dark-haired man she’d danced with at the ball. They introduced themselves officially and the Forest Owls got to work on briefing them on the first mission plan right away. The plan to capture president Vinzer Deling by uncoupling his train car and swapping it with a fake of their own went off excellent with the help of the SeeD’s however, they discovered that the ‘president’ was only a body double. The resistance attempt left the Galbadians on high alert searching for the members of the resistance to shut it down. Rino’s Owls split off to help make the search more difficult for the Galbadians and Rinoa headed off with the SeeDs to carry out another plan to broadcast a message of subversion through the newly initiated Timber TV-station. The area, however, was just too heavily guarded Rinoa told the See Ds that the mission must be abandoned and the squad leader went off on her about her commitment seeming to find the whole trip a waste of his time. Infuriated, Rinoa left them and headed back to the base hoping to regroup only to find it destroyed.
On the very station she’d been about to attempt to take over, Rinoa saw Seifer take the real president hostage. As fast as her legs could carry her and with little option left, Rinoa hurries toward the TV station to find Seifer and the SeeDs. She was too late to find Seifer but she decided to remind Squall that they were still under her contract and she ordered them to help hide her while the Galbadian forces were still searching the town. The way back to Balamb was just not an option, so the SeeDs with Rinoa in tow as well as the former instructor Quistis who’d come in pursuit of Seifer instead headed to Galbadia’s Garden. The entire way it seemed that all Squall and Rinoa found themselves doing was arguing and she just couldn’t help it! He was just such a hardhead and so withdrawn and cold! Along the way, the SeeDs all just passed out in the woods and Rino was left to panic for a while. When they came to again they all described having the same dream and Rinoa feeling a bit guilty for being so difficult apologized to Squall. He was the professional after all so she decided it was probably best to trust him.
When the group arrived at Galbadia’s garden, Rino just kind of pretended to be a SeeD to the best of her ability to avoid any unneeded questions. It was a lot tougher than it looked. It was at the garden that they all found out that Seifer for taking the president hostage was to be executed and Rinoa upset by this revealed to the group her history with him. Galbadia Garden gave the SeeD squad new orders to go to Deling City and assassinate the sorceress providing one of their own SeeDs Irvine the Sharpshooter to help carry out this task. The group headed to Deling City to meet with the contact that sent for this order to discover that it was none other than Commander Caraway and reluctantly Rinoa accompanied them to her childhood home. Rinoa made the mistake of leaving sight of the group and was locked in a room at the Commander’s order so that he could brief the SeeDs on the assassination. Rinoa was hard to hold on to, however, and she managed to slip out as she always did and she had some plans of her own on how to go about besting the sorceress. She got her hands on a rare bangle that was rumored to suppress the powers of the sorceress. She presented the idea of tricking the sorceress to wear the bangle to Quistis who completely belittled the idea accusing Rinoa of coming up with it JUST to go against her father. With no other choice and the same spirit that just couldn’t be quelled, Rinoa decided to carry out her plan alone.
Rino infiltrated the President’s Residence and offered the Sorceress Edea the bangle under the guise of a gift. Her mistake became clear when she lost all control of her body and lethargically swayed after Edea to the balcony where the woman declares that Rino is to be a sacrifice for the sorceress’ coronation ceremony. Two monsters were summoned to carry out the sacrifice but Squall and Irvine managed to save her from the Sorceress’ parade float but as they were attempting to fend off the sorceress, an ice spike went straight through Squall’s chest. Desperately, Rino reached out to stop his fall from the float but was unsuccessful in catching his hand. The entire group (except for Irvine) was captured and imprisoned in the D-District.
Eventually, Irvine came to bust Rinoa out much to her dismay at her father’s request. He was gonna leave everyone else in there to rot so she badgered him until he agreed to help her rescue the others. Once free, half of the group rushed to Balamb Garden to warn them of a missile retaliation they found out about whilst being captured while the rest lead by Selphie departed for the base that housed those missiles. In spite of Selphie’s group’s best efforts to shut down that base, the missiles made their launch anyway. Thankfully Squall’s group was able to initiate the garden’s mobile functions and avoid the explosion.
The garden floated to Fisherman’s Horizon where the group was able to reunite with one another and on the way over Rinoa took a bit of time to have Squall show her around the garden. Upon landing, the Mayor of Fisherman’s Horizon was resistant to their presence expecting that it will bring only danger and unfortunately he wasn’t wrong in that assessment. Galbadian soldiers indeed arrived and when the Mayor attempted to speak with them peacefully, they had no interest in it. They were lucky that Unexpectedly, Selphie’s group also made it to Fisherman’s Horizon and Rinoa was able to watch a rare moment for Squall. He was absolutely thrilled to see that they’d made it out of there alright and she honestly couldn’t help her relief either. For his efforts, Squall was appointed commander of SeeD so Rinoa rallied his friends together and they help put together a musical concert to celebrate. She also asked Zell SUPER nicely if he could try to get his hands on Squall's ring for her for...safekeeping. Predictably it took a lot of convincing to get Squall to even go to his own celebration, but she managed and she worked on trying to convince him that it was safe to open up a little more and to rely on his friends.
Rinoa stayed with the group as they discovered bits and pieces of their past and they investigated parts of the world for clues in regards to them, but she began to feel like an outsider and a burden. In some ways it was almost like she could blame herself for the start of a possible world war, and though she knew that all of what was happening was much bigger than her, it was hard not to feel overwhelmed. Eventually, the mobile Galbadian Garden attacked Balamb's and in the fray Rinoa was knocked overboard only to be saved just in time by Squall. He'd stolen a Galbadian jet pack and used it to get to her. They boarded the enemy garden, regrouped with their friends and made their way through it to face the Sorceress Edea and Seifer, whom Squall had earlier made it very clear he might have to kill, head on. The group succeeded in defeating Seifer and then the Sorceress...but that's when things got a little hazy and Rinoa fell into a coma. Apparently it was in that time that Squall realized his feelings for her and he restlessly searched for a way to wake her.
When Rinoa did awaken again, it was not under her own control. The Sorceress was actually an entity called Ultimecia that was passed on from Edea in her defeat to Rinoa. Under Ultimecia's control, Rinoa awakened in the Lunar Base after being brought there by Squall. She was controlled like a puppet. She suited up, killed anyone who got in her way and she hurled herself from the station into space to free the Sorceress Adel from her space bound tomb. From there she was left to die in the vastness of space. Just as she was about to accept her fate, she heard Squalls voice. Suddenly he was there, also in a space suit, holding her as they floated into that expected nothingness. Evidently, it just wasn't yet their time. An aimlessly floating ship called the Ragnarok was just near enough for them to board. They succeeded and they fought their way through strange creatures to the control room. Squall reached the base's command from the Ragnarok's communication system and followed their procedures to keep the ship functioning enough to get it landed. In their time alone together, Squall confessed so much to her and she to him. She told him that he was the one that brought her the most comfort and happiness and that in that moment she was terrified of what would happen when they landed. Command announced that the moment they were to land, they would seize the 'sorceress.' Rinoa had no choice but to face the fact that they meant her...and they were right.
On landing in Esthar, Rinoa was taken captive to be cryogenically entombed, but thankfully Squall came to her rescue and free'd her before they succeeded. She fell into his arms and she cried realizing in that moment how desperate she was to be alive and be with him. For safe keeping, Squall and the others decided to hide Rinoa at the orphanage they grew up in under Edea's care. Rinoa and Squall spent a bit of time together. She asked him to kill her if she ever lost control of herself and started trying to hurt people again but he told her he'd fight Ultimecia, not her. It was embarrassing, even a bit scary to see what he'd think, but she told him about a nightmare she had where she was supposed to meet him and she just kept running and she never found him. He told her it was just a dream and they promised that if either of them needed to find the other, they would meet at the wildflower field behind the orphanage.
The group invades the lunar base and together they defeat the sorceress' vessel Adel, only for Ultimecia to take over Rinoa again in an effort to cast a time compression spell forcing Rinoa back in time. The rest of the group ended up in the future. They defeated Ultimecia there but they ended up scattered, lost, and Rinoa is deposited into the flower field she was meant to wait for Squall in. With her magic she was able to locate Squall in the void between time. She followed him and brought him back to the flower field with her. There was a large celebration at Balamb Garden and when Rinoa and Squall were able to steal a moment alone, the two of them saw a shooting star just like the one that flew overhead the night of the ball.
Suddenly Rinoa is aware again. Though nothing seems out of the ordinary, Rinoa can just feel that quite a lot of time has passed, and presumably in that time she was...somewhere. That meant Squall was somewhere too.
"You're-going-to-like-me! You're-going-to-like-me! Did it work?"
"Do you actually have fun acting so callous towards your comrades?"
"I don't want the future. I want the present to stand still. I just want to stay here with you..."
Somewhere beneath a smattering of thick black locks of hair, Rinoa eyes fluttered open from a sleep that felt like it had been years long. Strangely she felt no pain, not even a headache. The first thing she smelled was the strong sweetness of wildflowers and tall grass. It was carried to her on a breeze that had obviously spent a great deal of time tossing her hair around.
Rinoa flattened her palms on either side of her face to lift herself up onto her arms and she could only stare in bewilderment at the vast pile of white feathers she'd just been lying in. The sun was pleasantly warm on her face as she looked around a bit to gain her bearings. A meadow peppered with pink and white wildflowers waved gleefully at her from all sides.
Drawing in a shaking breath, the young woman carefully got to her feet. "This place..." she knew it well... but she didn't see him anywhere. It seemed Rinoa was faced with a choice. She could wait here and keep the promise she made to him or she could start looking for him. An onslaught of questions hit her like a train car. How long had she been here and asleep for that matter? What...even happened to her in the first place? Was it possible that she'd hurt someone again? Were there soldiers looking for her here?
Though Rinoa was growing concerned, the breeze picked up for a moment and puffs of pollen and petals were blown free of her hair and her duster. Among them a single white feather caught her attention. She remembered this. Tears began to build in Rinoa's eyes as she reached out to catch that small white feather. Was he...coming to find her? If he came here...he'd find her. Waiting for him.
