How'd you find us?:
Approximately early 30s
Servant of Minerva; ex-SOLDIER
Blood Brother: Angeal Hewley
Friend and Rival: Sephiroth
Siblings Through Jenova: Those in Project G, Project S, DEEPGROUND, and the Genesis Clones
Biological: Mother and Father (Deceased)
Adopted: Mother and Father (Deceased)
A product of his noble upbringing and having been gifted amazing abilities due to being a part of the JENOVA Project, Genesis has always been a prideful and arrogant character. He has an unsatiable drive to be the best, and becomes jealous of those who are more successful than he. Everything from his mannerisms and speech, to his appearance and combat style were carefully crafted to be as ornate as possible. Despite this vanity however, he prefers only to be admired not mingled with. Throughout his life he only found two people whom he would consider his friends, and potentially a third had it not been for circumstance. They were the only people he would open up to, sharing his emotions and dreams with them while supporting their own. Should he feel shorted however, and his immense temper get the best of him he can break the ties in order to accomplish whatever right must be done to correct the wrong against him. After all nothing matters more than himself. Still, he felt a strong connection to his friends and tried several times to pull them onto his own side in order to keep that bond alive.
Summed up, Genesis was flamboyant, proud, and envious. At least that's how he'd been before the events of Crisis Core and the Nibelheim Incident. Throughout his life Genesis had been enamored with an ancient poem known as LOVELESS, trying desperately to place himself within it and decipher its meaning. As time progressed and events unfolded, Genesis began to believe that he and his two friends Angeal and Sephiroth were the three friends in the story. Continuing to see parallels in his life and the epic he strove to enact it, believing that if he could claim the Gift of the Goddess he could restore his body back to normal. He tried to sacrifice everything for it, from his friendship with Angeal and Sephiroth to the lives of Zack and countless others. The end justified the means, so long as he got what he wanted and what was best it didn't matter how it was accomplished so long as it painted him as a hero. After all of the pain and sacrifices he made he would eventually find this gift, receiving it from the manifestation of the Lifestream known as Minerva. After she restored his body, and he had been defeated by Zack, he turned down the opportunity to join DEEPGROUND and the Tsviets for a much loftier goal. Feeling a great debt to Minerva for his recovery he pledged his life to her servitude and protection, becoming the tireless protector he is today.
Long before the birth of Genesis, a calamity came to The Planet known as Jenova. It nearly wiped out the Cetra, before being contained in a rock layer to rot for all eternity. Unfortunately it would be found by Shinra scientists and mistaken for the very Cetra is nearly destroyed, and experiments were conducted using its cells in order to create a race that could communicate with the planet and lead Shinra to the Promised Land; a place believed to have infinite Mako to be extracted and used for profit. From this "JENOVA Project" came the two branches known as Professor Hojo's "Project S" and Professor Hollander's "Project G", for Sephiroth and Gillian respectively. Competition was fierce to create the super SOLDIERs needed for their goals, leading to Professor Hollander injecting the woman Gillian with JENOVA's cells before further passing them onto other subjects like Genesis. Ultimately however "G" was scrapped in favor of the more successful "S", leading Genesis to be orphaned and adopted by a wealthy landlord in Banora Village. Due to his very young age however, he'd not know of any of this.
Despite not knowing of their connection through Gillian, Genesis would soon befriend her son Angeal despite their difference in class. As they grew older and Shinra went to war with Wutai, the exploits of a mysterious SOLDIER known as Sephiroth. Jealous of his success, Genesis convinced Angeal to leave with him and join SOLDIER so that they could become heroes like this silver haired man. Due to their body's enhancements with JENOVA cells they were spectacular candidates, and they quickly rose through the ranks to First Class where they'd meet and befriend their unknowing rival. They became friends, often joining one another on missions and sparring in the training room. This is where an unfortunate accident occurred, with Angeal's sword breaking as he tried to end the dangerous battle between his two friends. It cut into Genesis's shoulder, letting a large amount of Mako seep into the wound from the hologram around them. This is what made the would continue to worsen and his body start to degrade, despite the wound having been so minor. Manipulated by Professor Hollander in his search for a cure, he deserted SOLDIER with many of its 2nd and 3rd class combatants who had Genesis's genetics implanted into them to make them a much more powerful threat that shared his appearance and abilities.
During Shinra's siege on Fort Tamblin to end the Wutai War Genesis confronted Angeal with the truth of their heritage from the information he'd gained from the professor. Angeal was uneasy however, not convinced that destroying Shinra was the answer to their problems and that they should abandon their honor and dreams for that. As he brooded and thought things over, Genesis summoned Ifrit in an attempt to eradicate the remaining Shinra forces before he returned home to Banora Village and slaughtered his parents and the townspeople for participating in Project G and knowingly hiding the information from him. He still loved and respected them enough to bury them at least, despite the betrayal. The redhead then housed himself in the local apple juice factory as he awaited Angeal's decision to join him or not, only to be confronted by the Turk Tseng and SOLDIER 2nd Class Zack Fair. After defeating the Turk with a single spell, Genesis then leaves as a conflicted Angeal distracted Zack before letting the boy go. He then ran to Angeal's house, where he found Gillian dead and assumed Angeal had killed his mother. After striking him and demanding answers, it's revealed that Angeal wasn't choosing either Shinra or Genesis's side in the upcoming conflict and he fled with Genesis still quoting LOVELESS to try and convince him. To keep Zack out of his way he then summoned Bahamut, following his friend and unleashing his wing to fly away leaving the SOLDIER behind with the knowledge that he and his friend were monsters.
The 'monster' then made his move, leading an attack directly on Shinra Headquarters in Midgar. To fuel the effort they'd created a lab for Professor Hollander in the Sector 5 Reactor, where Genesis copies were created for the assault. When a now SOLDIER 1st Class Zack arrived there with Sephiroth, he chased the Professor while Genesis stayed behind with the silver haired man. After reminiscing about the past, Genesis reveals that he seeks the "Gift of the Goddess" before being allowed to escape. Upon reaching Professor Hojo in an attempt to kill him he is interrupted by Angeal and Zack, the former of which having had a change of heart and deciding to aid Shinra from the shadows. Typical of him, Genesis quoted LOVELESS in his explanation of why he was following Professor Hollander. Abandoning his given objective, Genesis then battles Angeal in an attempt to reenact LOVELESS and uncover the final act so that he may find his much sought "gift" while his summoned Bahamut Fury confronts Zack Fair. The two of course then part, a victor undecided.
Genesis then returned to one of their bases, this one in Modeoheim, where the whitening ex-SOLDIER confronted Professor Hollander and decided to kill him for failing to keep his end of the bargain and ending the degradation. Instead he would seek the JENOVA cells, and inject them into himself in order to be healed. Zack and an infantryman named Cloud interfere, leading to the professor's escape. As Cloud pursued him Zack remained behind to fight Genesis, who had declared his intention to destroy the world that had betrayed him if he could not be cured. After being defeated by the younger SOLDIER, Genesis flung himself into the depths of the Mako Reactor to make his escape while Professor Hollander was captured with the help of Angeal's sacrifice to rid the world of monsters like himself.
Months later however, he made his return as his clone army attacked Shinra bases all over the world. Zack and Sephiroth were deployed to Junon, where the professor was jailed and a likely target of Genesis. In a surprise move he was captured by clones instead of killed on the spot, so he could be tortured by the vengeful creation. Due to this the professor injected himself with the same cells as Genesis, earning him the favor of the would be hero since now they had a shared interest in stopping the degradation. Concluding that the JENOVA cells of Sephiroth were indeed the solution, he went to Nibelheim's reactor to draw out and ask Sephiroth for his help. Despite his telling his friend everything there was to know about the experiments however, he was denied access to Sephiroth's cells and was forced to depart to find other means.
Even after four years, nothing was found to save Genesis and Professor Hollander from their fate. Luckily for them Zack and Cloud had left Nibelheim's mannor which presented the opportunity to harvest Sephiroth's cells from them after Hojo's experiments there. First Zack was captured and his hair eaten by a clone to test the hypothosis, but it turned into a monster and was killed by the now ex-SOLDIER. Genesis left, and Hollander concluded with him the reason the cells were not pure enough was because he had been in SOLDIER so his body had been able to reject them. They then swarm the duo in Gongaga, trying to find the blond. Genesis however ultimately retreats, feeling he had figured out a different way than the S-cells to be cured.
The true gift of the goddess: The Minerva materia in a cavern underneath the ruins of Banora. Standing before it as Zack arrives late, he tells the hero how the three friends were reunited once again thanks to Zack inheriting Angeal's legacy and Sephiroth's cells so now LOVELESS was fulfilled. He then used the materia to transform into a monstrous beast, but still is unable to defeat Zack. Thankfully he was cured of his degradation from this, returning to his human form to battle his enemy in a dual between two SOLDIER. Defeated, Genesis soon finds himself surrounded by Lifestream and in the presence of Minerva herself. His life saved by her, he was carried out by Zack from the cave and sparred his story ending here.
Zack then gathers three dumbapples, taking a bit out of one of them in order to complete Genesis's dream of eating an apple with Sephiroth and Angeal even though he wasn't the real thing. When asked if the dumbapple was the gift of the goddess Genesis disagrees, having finally learned that the gift was his pride as a SOLDIER all along. Happy to have accomplished his mission, Genesis fades into unconsciousness as Zack takes Cloud towards Midgar. It wasn't long however before a helicopter from DEEPGROUND landed, carrying Weiss the Immaculate and Nero the Sable. They then capture the sleeping Genesis, leaving his beloved LOVELESS behind.
Upon awakening he learns that the two SOLDIER that kidnapped him were holding a rebellion against the Restrictors than ran DEEPGROUND and wished for his assistance. Refusing to help, Genesis then retreated into a cavern beneath the machine city to await the day that Minerva would summon him to protect the world. It would be another three years before this would come to pass, with an unconscious Weiss dropped into his cavern. After telling his 'brother' that they had much to do, he flies into the night to begin his mission...
"When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end, the goddess descends from the sky. Wings of light and dark spread afar, she guides us to bliss... Her gift, everlasting."
"So smug, but for how long?"
"The world needs a new hero!"
"Just a scrape, I'll be fine, don't worry..."
"What I seek, is the gift of the goddess."
"After all, your glory should have been mine."
"No such luck. You are a monster."
"JENOVA-project G, gave birth to Angeal... And monsters like myself. JENOVA-project S... Used the remains of countless failed experiments to create a perfect monster."
"I see... Perfect monster indeed."
"To ponder is in itself a gift. We will all join the Lifestream. You, are no exception. The Planet has become my guardian."
"Is it good..? The gift of the goddess... Angeal... The dream... Came true..."
"Even if the morrow is barreen of promises, nothing shall forestall my return. To become the dew that quenches the land... The seas... The skies... I offer thee, this silent... Sacrifice."
"It is not yet time for slumber. We still have much work to do... My brother."
"It would seem that much has happened during my slumber. If Sephiroth, and Ultima WEAPON were not enough to warrant my summoning... What crisis is it that we now face to require my attention? Is this threat really so fierce, that those are dwarfed in comparison? That Cloud and his AVALANCHE aren't enough?" Genesis thought aloud as he stood atop the spire of a building in Kalm, his arms crossed firmly over his chest. The wind blew gently through his hair, the bottom of his coat flapping behind him in the wind while he quietly sighed and looked up to the moon above. The harrowing warning from Minerva had left him uneasy, though he wouldn't consider himself nervous about it. If anything he relished the challenge, finally a chance to show the world just how much of a hero he really was. What better way was there to do so than to swoop in and stand up during its greatest time of need?
Smiling a little, Genesis dropped his left hand to his side and ran the right through his hair with a gentle sigh. Finally what he wanted his whole life was at hand, a battle that would cement him in history as the greatest warrior the world had over known and of course the popularity that would come with it. Just like Sephiroth had earned long ago in Wutai, but on a much grander scale. Who was better suited than him after all, to outdo the one winged angel so? Spreading his wing, Genesis gently flapped to gain an inkling on the wind patterns around him before taking flight upon one of them over the sleepy city. Quiet as it was, with lights out except the streets' to keep its inhabitants safe, there was something amiss here. Something that didn't belong in this world. Genesis was going to find it.
And the hero was going to eliminate it.
